Holocaust Museum Shares 14 Signs Of Fascism In Its Early Stages, People Now See A Connection To The Current State of US Politics
A few years back, the gift shop of The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum used to sell this poster with 14 early signs of fascism listed on it. Apparently, the list was originally created by self-proclaimed amateur historian Laurence Britt in 2003 for an article published by Free Inquiry magazine. Even though the gift shop of the museum doesn’t sell this poster anymore, it still goes viral on the internet every once in a while. Why, you ask? Apparently, people find it particularly familiar at this point in American politics.

The poster lists 14 warning signs including powerful and continuing nationalism, disdain for human rights, identification of enemies as a unifying cause, rampant sexism, controlled mass media, obsession with national security, religion and government intertwined, corporate power protected, labor power suppressed, disdain for intellectuals and the arts, and obsession with crime and punishment as well as rampant cronyism and corruption.

For instance, the first early sign of fascism is described as powerful and continuing nationalism. Do we even need to talk about this one? Donald Trump’s slogans such as “America First!” or “Make America Great Again!” are well-known for being his favorite ones. Besides, back in 2018, at a campaign event in Houston, Trump said this: “You know, they have a word, it sort of became old-fashioned. It’s called a nationalist. And I say, ‘Really? We’re not supposed to use that word?’ You know what I am? I’m a nationalist. OK? I’m a nationalist.”
“Catchy slogans, pride in the military, and demands for unity were common themes in expressing this nationalism. It was usually coupled with a suspicion of things foreign that often bordered on xenophobia,” Laurence Britt writes in his article.

“The most significant common thread among these regimes was the use of scapegoating as a means to divert the people’s attention from other problems, to shift blame for failures, and to channel frustration in controlled directions,” Laurence Britt writes in his article. People have been pointing out that Trump always finds a way to blame others for the things happening in the country. For instance, the president has been placing blame for the pandemic outside the United States on the Chinese government and the World Health Organisation.
Moreover, it’s not a secret to anyone that Trump has said and written many things that were quite sexist, to say the least. From referring to a former porn actress who he allegedly had an affair with as “Horseface” to alleging that cable TV anchor Mika Brzezinski was “bleeding badly from a face-lift,” the list goes on.

After all, this is America, officially a democracy with the rule of law, a constitution, a free press, honest elections, and a well-informed public constantly being put on guard against evils. That's because the "winners" always write history as they see fit and thus, we never learn from actual history since you know, we always rewrite it. This is 1984 stuff right there. We're at war with Iraq! Next week "we've always been at war with China, what are you talking about?".
How can children learn when history is no longer taught in our schools? Only revisionist history is allowed, lies and propaganda and hate for America. In 1956, Russian Communist leader Nikita Khrushchev stated "we will take over America without firing a shot". And indeed, they have done just that courtesy of leftist teachers whose goal was not educating their charges but indoctrinating them.

I was going to say thank you for the facts, but then I actually opened Snopes and the USA today article. Both say that it's a list created by an amateur historian after researching 7 fascist regimes, which is what this article says too. (Maybe BoredPanda was updated?) If you can share a citation of Passmore's debunking, I'd like to read it, but in the meantime this seems like pretty much what it claims to be.

Historical fascism hallmarks don't define fascism today. The fascism of today comes from the authoritarian left, that demands blind obedience or they will literally try to destroy you any way they can. There are a few reasons this poster isnt sold anymore. 1) It doesnt correlate with the actual definition of Fascism. See merriam-webster or any dictionary. 2) This isnt from the holocaust so for it to be in a museum is historically dishonest. 3) Many of the points on this are quite literally part of my Democratic party. All I know is that there is a huge, long list of Trump's very positive achievements in just 3 years. The economy was lifted out of the sh*tter where Obummer had dumped it (Barry:"What jobs is he going to bring back? What jobs?" Barrack Hussein Obama). Under Trump, unemployment was at a real low, + he did an amazing thing that Obummer would never do for blacks, he created a second chance for convicts coming out of jail. A program that genuinely offers support so that opportunities are there to help prevent reoffending + therefore readmission to jail. This is a gift to that section of the population - which has an inordinate number of blacks in it. Thank you, President Trump.

Yes, Trump is a terrible leader with zero respect for the principles that made America as worthy as I would argue that it is. But on the charge of 'disdain for intellectuals', some on the far left have recently been guilty of this when they said of conservatives coming to speak at mostly liberal universities: "Get Your Hate Speech Off Of This Campus!!!!" There's been a creeping authoritarianism that way that may be stifling a great deal of free speech and the meaningful exchange of ideas. For those of us with more progressive points of view, to intelligently condemn those on the right who might try to suppress our speech, we have to adhere to the principle of allowing those with the views we most disagree with the free reign to say what they will. This then allows us to coherently demand the same, and with such free reign, over time, many of our progressive ideas will tend to win in the courts of public opinion and public policy.
Scientific study of human behavior shows that conservatives are the ones who align with authoritarianism, NOT liberals.
Jace, I'd heard the same point in undergrad in political science: far right thinking & authoritarianism have a lot of psychological overlap. That accords w/ my intuitions, & let's say that turns out to be, by and large, correct. Still, none of that changes the fact that it was an example of dabbling in another kind of authoritarianism where liberals at mostly liberal campuses fought, at times successfully, to prevent conservative intellectuals from speaking on their campus. It was going against the principle of being open to intellectual debate to say: 'Ben Shapiro can't be allowed to speak at my campus b/c he invalidates my safe space and it triggers me!' There never were and have never been valid reasons to suppress either Ben Shapiro's right to free speech, or the right to hear his free speech of those students who wanted to. Such students have the right to hear all intellectual ideas, even if they happen to want to hear from Shapiro b/c they agree with him.

I was going to say thank you for the facts, but then I actually opened Snopes and the USA today article. Both say that it's a list created by an amateur historian after researching 7 fascist regimes, which is what this article says too. (Maybe BoredPanda was updated?) If you can share a citation of Passmore's debunking, I'd like to read it, but in the meantime this seems like pretty much what it claims to be.

The fascism of today comes from the authoritarian left, that demands blind obedience or they will literally try to destroy you any way they can. See merriam-webster or any dictionary. 2) This isnt from the holocaust so for it to be in a museum is historically dishonest. 3) Many of the points on this are quite literally part of my Democratic party. All I know is that there is a huge, long list of Trump's very positive achievements in just 3 years. The economy was lifted out of the sh*tter where Obummer had dumped it (Barry:"What jobs is he going to bring back? What jobs?" Barrack Hussein Obama). Under Trump, unemployment was at a real low, + he did an amazing thing that Obummer would never do for blacks, he created a second chance for convicts coming out of jail. A program that genuinely offers support so that opportunities are there to help prevent reoffending + therefore readmission to jail. This is a gift to that section of the population - which has an inordinate number of blacks in it. Thank you, President Trump.

Yes, Trump is a terrible leader with zero respect for the principles that made America as worthy as I would argue that it is. But on the charge of 'disdain for intellectuals', some on the far left have recently been guilty of this when they said of conservatives coming to speak at mostly liberal universities: "Get Your Hate Speech Off Of This Campus!!!!" There's been a creeping authoritarianism that way that may be stifling a great deal of free speech and the meaningful exchange of ideas. For those of us with more progressive points of view, to intelligently condemn those on the right who might try to suppress our speech, we have to adhere to the principle of allowing those with the views we most disagree with the free reign to say what they will. This then allows us to coherently demand the same, and with such free reign, over time, many of our progressive ideas will tend to win in the courts of public opinion and public policy.
Scientific study of human behavior shows that conservatives are the ones who align with authoritarianism, NOT liberals.
Jace, I'd heard the same point in undergrad in political science: far right thinking & authoritarianism have a lot of psychological overlap. That accords w/ my intuitions, & let's say that turns out to be, by and large, correct. Still, none of that changes the fact that it was an example of dabbling in another kind of authoritarianism where liberals at mostly liberal campuses fought, at times successfully, to prevent conservative intellectuals from speaking on their campus. It was going against the principle of being open to intellectual debate to say: 'Ben Shapiro can't be allowed to speak at my campus b/c he invalidates my safe space and it triggers me!' There never were and have never been valid reasons to suppress either Ben Shapiro's right to free speech, or the right to hear his free speech of those students who wanted to. Such students have the right to hear all intellectual ideas, even if they happen to want to hear from Shapiro b/c they agree with him.

The main difference is that under communism, most property and economic resources are owned and controlled by the state (rather than individual citizens); under socialism, all citizens share equally in economic resources as allocated by a democratically-elected government.
