People Create 14 Memes Celebrating Female Actresses In Response To ‘Sexist’ Tweet About Kirsten Dunst
We all have favorite actors and actresses. I’m a big fan of Keanu Reeves and Emma Stone, for example — they’re both breathtaking, and if I had to rate them, I’d give them both an easy ‘A.’ Legendary actress Kirsten Dunst has a massive following, and it’s no wonder — she’s very capable, and plays her roles well.
Dunst recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is a humongous honor for any actor out there. However, when Reuters reported on the story, they tweeted out that Dunst was “best known for her role as Spiderman’s girlfriend.” This created a massive backlash and the internet community branded the tweet as ‘sexist’. Not only that, but this entire affair gave birth to a whole new meme that celebrated how amazingly versatile actresses are.
Reuters posted a tweet about Kirsten Dunst that caused a massive backlash online

Internet users started explaining why Dunst was much more than just “Spiderman’s girlfriend”
Twitter users came up with a new meme to celebrate how versatile actresses are
The essence of the meme is to show that Dunst and other actresses are far more adept at their jobs than some would believe they are. Internet users were quick to jump on the meme express and gave a whole slew of examples of how actresses could do male actors’ roles in films, but the reverse wouldn’t be true.
Dunst, who is now 37, has done a lot of amazing projects throughout her career, and she definitely deserves her Hollywood star. Her debut came in 1989 when she played a role in Woody Allen’s film New York Stories (one of my favorites). She then garnered a lot of attention after playing Claudia in Interview with the Vampire, which came to a theatre near you in 1994.
Among Dunst’s many, many roles is also the epic Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Perhaps Reuters thought that’s the role most people remember and that’s why they mentioned it in their tweet?
Dunst also played Peggy Blumquist in the awesome TV series Fargo in 2015, and in 2017, she received a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance in Hidden Figures. Her two most recent film appearances were in The Beguiled and in Woodshock. The internet’s backlash forced Reuters to delete their tweet about Dunst.
Dear Pandas, what do you think about this situation? Do you think Reuters was wrong to say Dunst was best known for her role as Spiderman’s girlfriend? What do you think of the internet’s reaction? Which memes do you think have the most truth in them? Take part in the discussion and leave us a comment below.
Reuters promptly deleted their tweet after the backlash…
…and posted a different one
That meme comparing male to female actors is kinda dumb. Imo Gary Oldman could totally do The Devil Wears Prada.
He's a fantastic actor. I don't think I'd recognize him if I passed him on the street, he just completely becomes whoever he's playing.
Load More Replies...I'm totally on board with gender equality but this thread is the opposite of that. Any good actor could make any role work. Arnold couldn't play Mary Poppins? What about Kindergarten Cop? Please dont turn gender equality into male hate. That's not productive. It's a destructive mind set. Males and females need each other to continue the species; we just need to treat each other right. Let's start by not telling others what they're capable of based on sexual organs.
And where did you see male hate? All I see is a bunch of people emphasizing how "feminine" roles are underappreciated. When a man plays someone "manly" e.g. Terminator, James Bond, he gets the praise. But when women play someone "feminine", everyone pretends like it's easy. "Oh, it's easy for them to play gfs, nannies, mothers... they are women". They just ask more appreciation for female roles by comparing them to man. "Think it's easy to sing, and dance, and play the nanny at the same time... imagine Arnold do it. Doesn't look so easy now, does it?" But when actresses do it, we pretend like its no big deal. This has to stop.
Load More Replies...We don’t get to choose what people best remember us for. It’s why many people don’t remember me as a father and upstanding citizen. But as the kid that s**t himself in the grade concert.
Load More Replies...Look you had me at calling them out on their sexist b.s. but you don't have to put down male actors to raise women up that is not how we get to equality.
Jesus, you're trying to fight outrage hypocrisy? Let me know that goes, haha.
Load More Replies..."virgin suicides" is one of my favorites of all time, she was iconic
To me, she'll always be Amy in that adaptation of Little Women, had a great cast and she did her best to make an utterly infuriating and unappealing character look good, even for someone so young. I'd actually forgotten she was in Spiderman in light of other things she's been in. Someone send Rueters a Jumanji board!
Did you see Kirsten in Fargo (the series)? She earned an Emmy nomination and deserved it.
A lot of these are kinda dumb, like, I agree with the main point, but it is much much easier for a woman to play the lead in a more neutral movie, say a spy movie, than for a man to play the role of a teenage girl in a cliche high school set rom- com? Like those two types of movies are nowhere near close in terms of versatility? But might I add I would 100% pay loads of money to see Arnold Schwarzenegger play Mary Poppins like imagine him in a dress floating down from the sky from an umbrella and singing a spoon full of sugar falsetto
No, it's actually isn't easier for women to play a spy. You just think it is since woman are expected to play both feminine and masculine roles easily while men get praised for putting on a skirt. I think playing a Disney princess is harder then playing a spy. For both genders. And playing a spy is harder than say playing a banker (unless its a really cool banker). For both gender. We are just used to having bigger expectations from women as far as versatility is concerned. Having said that. Yes I would pay a lot of money for that version of Mary Poppins too, I think they should totaly go for it.
Load More Replies...I mean I did know her best as Spider mans gf. The upside down kiss and her wet t shirt
She’s only a few years older than me so I grew up watching her and all her movies. Bring it on will always be my fave
Oh stop it! Did Kirsten Dunst even feel offended herself? Some people are so busy finding something to be offended by. Get a life and spend your time on matters that matter.
She has been complaining lately about not getting her dues and I agree with her, she's a very good actress and doesn't get nominated for much.
Load More Replies...Yes, "Melancholia" is the first that comes to my mind, although I saw her before that in other roles, of course.
Her upside down spidey kiss is one of the most iconic scenes in the whole genre so it's no surprise she's best known for being in what I'm sure is the highest grossing films of her career. That means, almost by definition, that she'd be best known for the thing more people saw. It's not rocket science.
I would have paid good money to see Julie Andrews do a musical of the Terminator. The songs kind of write themselves: "The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Time Travelers Arriving"; "A Spoonful of Skynet"; "Sarahconnorfragilisticexpialadocious"; "Getting to Know You, Dr Silberman"; "Do-Re-T800"; "EdelReese"; " etc.
They did this to Clint Eastwood's ex girlfriend, Sondra Locke, when she died, but that was way worse. Some articles left her name out completely, only referring her to his ex. To make it worse, he treated her like c**p and helped ruin her career.
I support the sentiment of this post but Bryan Cranston as Cersi would be AMAZE BALLS!
She acted in Savage Garden song " I Knew I loved you"...Beautiful and classy...
I wouldn't be so sure about Gary Oldman not being able to do any effing thing he choses to do ;)
She was BRILLIANT in Interview with a Vampire. I haven't seen any of the Spiderman movies, even though I'm a comic book collector, Spidey wasn't on my radar much after the 70's and some into the 80's. So there's that for remembering what a brilliant actress she was as a child!
The virgin suicides is still one of my favorite movies and for a big part it's because she was Lux Lisbon! She was also extremely hot at the time, kind of the girl next door because she looked natural as f**k! ;-) https://gointothestory.blcklst.com/great-character-lux-lisbon-the-virgin-suicides-3ecdf77f0f
Being perfectly polite and politically correct is not what people do to get respect in this day and age. If a statement is about a professional receiving the honor of a lifetime, but is offensive because it highlights the professional for a minor role as somebody else's little side squeeze, it really doesn't look respectful. I applaud these people for having solidarity and coming up with a response that tries to give someone the proper level of respect and honor for the high achievements of their entire career. At least they finally got fed up enough with the idea that they weren't represented as women for having roles come to mind where women were their own leads. I'm female and I remember Kirsten for at least two other roles than Spider-Man because Spider-Man doesn't even appeal to me. No, I don't think in a country created by people who argued to have their freedoms respected or a media that curates without being considerate, that people must be quiet or polite about inequality.
I make a clear distinction between "best known for", and "best work as...some people like to split hairs I guess.
The magnitude of a feeling, having a lifetime achievement award, probably outweighs any other comments that could be made about it. However, style and public persona isn't just about logic. It's about magnitude and feeling the public would have for her as well. Does this do her justice by framing her entire lifetime achievements by what she is best known for by box office money? I guess the public just owns her career successes? We honor her hard work by saying she was a supporting role? Or would we honor her better by her actual role's name or even her best role as? I think we're dampening her ego, and taking the focus off of her and putting it on someone else, Spider-Man. It seems distasteful not to mention her by her own role's name. That way the focus is on her. I don't know how important her role is in Spider-Man, but she felt pivotal in Mona Lisa's Smile to me. I would only write that someone was merely someone else's supporting role for a lifetime of work if they were my enemy.
Load More Replies...Gender equality is fantastic. But if the qualifier is that she is best known as Spiderman's Girlfriend, doesn't that suggest that the real problem is what we, the public, know her for rather than what the news outlet is saying? I would ask the question: Do the people who got sore about this actually have to look her other work up to find something they can use as fodder to attack this? Or did they genuinely know her from something else better than from Spiderman?
I loved her and the whole cast of Mona Lisa's Smile and I didn't have to look that up.
Load More Replies...Sorry, but being a big fan of comic book based movies, and giving the popularity of those movies, "spiderman's girlfriend" would be my to go response if someone ask me who is she, is the easiest way for most people to remember her... Also, I've haven't seen her much after that, I do remember her too from Interview With The Vampire and Jumanji... but if I had to mention one of her movies after Spiderman, I'm blank... And if you search her in IMDB, she's also linked to Spiderman, so... 2019-09-04...1a-png.jpg
Gonna have to disagree... Gary Oldman could have totally done Devil Wears Prada. He's phenomenal.
Oh, and there is no way in hell Nicole Kidman could have pulled off the Shining.
Load More Replies...Its a Tweet, they just went with something that people would recognize, most of you crying werent even born when she was 12.
What do you expect, they probably have some 19 year old intern running the twitter. They simply do not know any better.
i dont get all the outrage. when i think of kirsten dunst that's literally the first thing I remember, her role in spiderman. pretty sure many other people feel the same way. just another manufactured left wing outrage whinefest. always need something to whine about. who cares anyway. do you think she really cares. does this make her any less rich or famous? no. it doesnt. find something worthwhile to complain about for once
Oh my god, these women need to stop playing the victim and get a life.
Btw the memw thing just plain stupid.
Load More Replies...Even if that were true, Spiderman's girlfriend has a name. (Yes, I'm aware I'm defending a fictional character. Life is weird.)
