People Can’t Believe The Shocking Note This Teacher Gave To A Kid After They Asked For A Permission To Go To The Bathroom
A teacher at Aspire Hanley Middle School in Memphis, Tn, has sparked a debate about classroom discipline by choosing to issue bi-monthly passes for “bathroom, water and nurse.”
The teacher, identified only as ‘Mrs. White’ was happy to describe her own actions as petty, while the pass contained threats and grammatical errors not befitting of a teacher. First shared by Twitter user Jaadee, a friend of a student’s mother, a screenshot of the pass has since generated overwhelmingly negative comments towards Mrs. White’s methods, which have been described as ‘inhumane’ and ‘cruel’. “I thought it was abhorrent,” Jaadee told Bored Panda. “The issue is much deeper than a teacher with crazy rules. This shows someone with control issues who has no power or authority at home, so they bring what little power they have to the one place where they will have no resistance – the classroom.”
Now, we don’t know any real background information to this story, the kids are not babies, they are in 8th grade and therefore should be able to regulate their bladders accordingly. However, it is the tone and attitude of Mrs. White that has convinced people that her way of dealing with the situation was no innocent mistake, she comes across quite badly in the note.
The school has since responded to the controversy, distancing themselves from Mrs. White’s ‘procedures,’ stating that they are under review and the ‘error’ will be corrected. “Their response was as good as it’s going to get,” Jaadee believes. “They’re not going to fire a veteran teacher and they’re not going to release details of her punishment. The superintendent speaking with local news cameras about it was very commendable.”

This is just illegal in any country. Minors can't sign any contract without the consent of their parents or guardians. In the more civilised parts of the world this teacher would be let off with a message that she'd better consider a careerchange. Guantanamo Bay detention camp springs to mind as a career opportunity for this controlfreak.

It's illegal everywhere as the children are not old enough to be legally bound by any contract, let alone some ridiculous toytown b******t like this. Plus the fact that the 'contract' in itself contravenes the pupils basic rights. If this were my child, I would immediately withdraw her from any class with this teacher as the teacher has clearly demonstrated that she is not stable or fit to be responsible for the education or wellbeing of young children. Here's a thought: The teacher just uses discretion when a student asks to go to the bathroom. If it's habitual, then she gets the parents involved to figure out why and what can be done to remedy the problem. If it's a legit request she doesn't have to question it. When I was in 5th grade I got migraines on a daily basis - thanks to my teacher recommending a good doctor we were able to get me the care I needed so I didn't have to go to the nurse daily. But had I been limited to 2 times a month it would have been an entirely different story.

In my child's school they would need to be prepared for hurricane momma. This would not fly. My child would be allowed to go to the bathroom no matter how many times they need to go and I would not provide a doctor's excuse. It's a human function. Have they never heard of UTI's or kidney infections. Eff that s**t.

I was going to make the comment that Mrs White was not fit to teach in the first place because she's only semi-literate, but then discovered that one of the commenters included in the original post had caught some of the mistakes. I'll add to the tally though - it's "special accommodation will only be made", not "only special accommodations will be made"; it's "after school", not "after-school"; and she needs to decide whether she's a Ms or a Mrs...
1. At the very least, girls with periods and students with medical problems are going to need to go whenever they need to. 2. Automatic detention and a zero - what the hell? 3. The phrases 'Mrs White is petty' 'although nothing will change' and 'SORRY TRY AGAIN NEXT MONTH' just seriously p**s me off.

I actually had points taken off my grade for using more than the "maximum bathroom passes" --we only had 3 for the semester. F*****g infuriating looking back as an adult.

This is when you get together with every other family in the grade, get letters from physicians requesting accommodations for every student in the class in regards to bathroom and healthcare access, and put that school through the intense pain of a few hundred simultaneous initial 504/IDEA determinations. That will put an immediate stop to that s**t.

I get some people abuse bathroom time and I can imagine a time of cell phones they text each other to meet at the bathroom/water fountain. I get it and rules exist because people break them. HOWEVER a basic human function shouldn't be denied. If someone takes excessive bathroom breaks or spends way too long away then maybe that should be addressed on a case by case basis. Everyone shouldn't have to suffer because a few people break the rules.
The strictness of the American schools always baffle me, in Italy most professors in high schools garant the students permission to exit class even to simply get coffee or stretch their legs (even to smoke until it was made illegal for and near minors)
Dude, which Italy you're describing? Access to the restroom wasn't restricted, but coffee breaks were allowed only during the 15 minutes break ( mid morning) or lunch break. And if you were caught of abusing the restroom you were reported and checked for medical issues, smoking and sometimes searched for drugs dealing. Ok is the banana's country, but never seen breaks given like you're saying. Not. Once.

That whole "8th grade students should be able to regulate their bathroom breaks accordingly" , except if a girl has her period, except if they have a urinary tract infection, Crohn's Disease, IBS, and many other problems that may arise on a daily basis. My daughter, in first grade, was told she had to wait to go to the bathroom and she ended up peeing all over herself and the school called me. My husband went and laid into them. She was humiliated and crying in the hallway. We told her that if she's ever told no again when she really has to go, to just walk out anyway and tell them to call her parents. Bill the school district for all pain and suffering caused by these actions including emotional distress. This policy can lead to bladder infections and a whole host of other medical issues. I’d report this to the P.T.A., and the school board and retain an attorney. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

this is messed up, that teacher was downright stupid, whoever that teacher is, has no respect for her students, she should be ashamed because nobody treats kids like that, no matter their age, that's just wrong.
There are kids who abuse the privilege - just to get out of class. It's best just to let them go. It's their choice and causes less disruption in the end.

This teacher sounds like your typical crusty, bitter old bat who should have retired 10 years ago. It also reminded me of a time back when I was in grade school. I started to feel nauseous and went up to the teacher's desk to tell her. Her response was curt and b****y. I then puked on her desk, much to the amusement of the rest of the class. Instant karma!

The way the teacher handled this is appalling, but I don't see how this is even an issue. When I was in junior high and high school, there was plenty of time between classes and each class was only 50 minutes. I don't recall ever needing to use the restroom during a class and the only time I had to leave a class for an admin visit was when I was called by admin, so I had no control over that. If kids are abusing bathroom visits to get out of class, there are way better ways to handle it.

This really dates me, but it reminds me of the movie "Driving Miss Daisy". Morgan Freeman is driving "Miss Daisy" played by Jessica Tandy and starts to pull the car over because he has to pee. She has a fit and tells him to just hold it. He drives on a bit and then proceeds to pull over. She starts in again and he politely informs her that he is a grown man and he knows when he needs to "make water". I'm pretty sure the majority of these kids aren't taking advantage and simply need to use the restroom. Give them the benefit of the doubt. And I pity ANY teacher who would have tried to stop my child from going to the nurse's office. They shouldn't have to announce to the class what their "issue" might be. This is especially true of girls who may have just started having a period and are unprepared.

I remeber when i was 13 and felt my period coming during class. It was 5 Minutes before the break- i knew it couldn't wait. So i asked to go to the bathroom- motion got denied. So i told my teacher :"I have got my period so i go to the f** bathroom. Talk to my parents of you have a problem with that" (well i was young- i might have a different wording for something like that today). My teacher did go to my parents with me and apologized to all of us :)
I just ask kids if they can wait. 90% of the time they say they can. The other 10% genuinely need to go. Simple!
That reviews and defines appropriate use of the bathroom, and need to see the nurse. Put it on paper for the students and their parents. Let them know, that they will not be denied the use of the bathroom or to see the nurse. But guidelines for the nurse should be discussed. Bathroom trips should never be denied! Trips to the nurse, should be quietly addressed between the student and teacher, and kept personal. The teacher should know, that if a student goes to see the nurse, she can professionally evaluate the child! And treat accordingly. But to deny a child a visit to the nurse, and then have that same child have a medical emergency? I would sue the living c**p out of the teacher and the school! This school needs some serious help. Also, involve a civil rights atty. to discuss with them what is ok to refuse, and what is not, on the part of the school and teachers. And above all, involve the parents!!
I just graduated high school and I always thought this rule was stupid, plus, in 7/8th grade I unexpectedly got my period (I didn't know any better to track my periods back then to prepare for them), and asked the teacher if I could go to the bathroom. It wasn't until I actually SAID the words "female emergency" that he actually let me go. BUT, even then he said "I'll let u go this time, but next time, you can't go." F*****g a*****e. Apart from being illegal, child abuse, and so on, I would go absolutely mental on this, and the teacher would not know what hit them. I would throw the absolute book at them, and if they didn't understand, go for criminal child abuse charges. This is just so not on. There is a reason for things happening, and sometimes, kids just have to go. I can understand if it is being disruptive, and they go continuously, and it being abused, but this??? No way... Children are not prisoners or the school property to do with as they please. If that is what they think, it will be a rude awakening for them.
Show or email the note to the district superintendent and tell him/her that s/he has 24 hours to "fix" this or I will send a copy of it to all local TV stations and newspapers and the local school board.

I don't know how the school system over there works but here in Germany you get breaks ranging from 10 to 45 mins (lunch) between every 45 min classes. Kids can go to the bathroom or eat and use the halls as they like during breaks.
For one thing, Mrs. White shouldn’t be a teacher because she can’t write proper English. Her note said “have went” rather than “have gone”. The administration is using the term scholars to refer to the students. Not all students are scholars. I find the entire note ridiculous. Students in Europe where I live bring water bottles to school so they can drink whenever they are thirsty. Granted, there are plenty of children who abuse bathroom breaks, but this is supposed to be a school and not a prison. I would remove my child from that class and make sure that teacher was reprimanded. I would also make sure the school board addressed the issue publicly.

Legally, I need to know where the students are at all times. I'm responsible for them. Also, legally, I cannot restrict a student's ability to take care of basic physical needs. If there is a reason that I cannot trust the student to go to the bathroom and to come back from the bathroom, then I need to work with the student, administrators, and parents to find a solution.
I told my son if he really had to go pee and his teacher ever told him no again, that he was to just pee in her trash can instead of wetting his pants.
I taught for a year and did several years of subbing and always let the my kids go to the bathroom. If we had something coming up where they couldnt be interrupted, they'd get a bathroom break. No one abused it, even when I subbed.

That's some serious micro-management here. Seriously, is a kid going to the bathroom more disrupting than a kid peeing his / her pants? And the paperwork! This teacher really love to complicate everyone's life, including her own, for no benefit at all.
We had something similar to this when I was in middle school. They were little cards with either 1 to 5 or 1 to 7( cant remember for sure). But they would punch the number out when you went to the bathroom. I dont think it was used for nurses visits. But i do think it was for the entire month and you got a new one each month and if you didn't keep up with it (lost it) you couldn't go to the bathroom.
this is the same policy in my school, some cant even go once during the year without trouble.
While the note was completely wrong, and maybe teaching isn't the right job for this teacher I do kind of feel for them, and the level of frustration that must have led to it. Saying students don't abuse the right to go to the bathroom is just ignorant. There are ways around this kind of situation though. I in no way ever think access to the school nurse should be restricted. But I do think being allowed to go for water and go to the bathroom should be allowed/disallowed at the teachers discretion at that age, because students do abuse it. This is 8th grade, these are not small children, they are about 13, they have control of their bladders and understand the concept of waiting and appropriate timing. They have plenty of breaks between classes and at lunch time to go to the bathroom and have water (if they didn't have the sense to bring a drink bottle). Heaven knows how I managed to not go to the bathroom regularly in class back in school.
Are the teacher paying for the possible young onset incontinence, UTI and variable other problems you can get from not enough water consumption and from not going to the bathroom when needed? Never mind the bladder damage might not be able to be fixed. Some does not have plenty of breaks, some does not have enough bathrooms. Some have bladders with bad timing. None of which the children or other humans in general should be punished for - least of all by someone whose body don't have to take the side effects of the decisions.

Well, this is a bit extreme, but we don't know WHY the teacher instituted this policy. Perhaps there is an issue with kids constantly asking to leave class. On the flip side, I'd like teachers to be a least a little tough, instead of treating 13 & 14 year olds like they are helpless babies. And on that note, this says 8th grade class. So, why does that student (who must be at at least 13 or 14) have the handwriting skills of a 6 year old.
First I have seen adults with far worst writing skills, and 2nd it does not matter the reason you cannot force a child to sign a contract. If there is an issue with them constantly leaving the classroom to use the restroom, go to the nurse or speak with the admin maybe there is are other issues. Either way this teacher has no right to make them sign a contract. And only being able to go twice in that period of time is crazy.

I think, she thinks way too much of herself! Firstly, she is in violation of these kids civil rights to take care of bodily functions and seek treatment from the nurse! While I don't agree with this, the article is just wrong where it says kids are responsible. They CAN be responsible, but a lot aren't. I have personally seen coats stuffed in toilets, breakfasts stuffed in toilets, wet toilet paper all over the ceiling, flooded toilets, and puddles of urine all over the floor so bad I thought the bathroom was flooded--I saw this at least three times last school year. Also, there was a girl who pooped on the floor daily 2 years ago.
When I was a freshman in HS, I had a teacher that didn't let me go to the bathroom (they were literally right outside of the classroom) so I asked her if she just wanted me to pee in my seat. She said no you won't do that. And I said well I can't hold it in and walked out, used the restroom. When I was walking back out she was standing outside the classroom waiting for me, threatening to give me detention if I didn't apologize. I told her I had nothing to apologize for, I needed to use the restroom and I wasn't going to embarrass myself in front of the classroom if I had peed myself. She let me off with a "warning" then would let me go whenever I asked after that. It's a joke. This is why teachers who actually deserve recognition don't get it, because of controlling freaks like these.
To be fair I definitely understand where the teacher is coming from. Unless you have tutored or been in the classroom yourself you will not understand the level of disrespect kids have for bathroom breaks. I think it's a great way to teach kids that their time is valuable and that they can spend an hour or 2 without having to go to the bathroom/walk the halls/do anything but classwork. It's a little harsh and I think her approach could be more mild but I side with the teacher in this case.

I actually had points taken off my grade for using more than the "maximum bathroom passes" --we only had 3 for the semester. F*****g infuriating looking back as an adult.
We didn't have a "contract" to sign---but it was a school-wide policy that effected grades.

I get it and rules exist because people break them. HOWEVER a basic human function shouldn't be denied. If someone takes excessive bathroom breaks or spends way too long away then maybe that should be addressed on a case by case basis. Everyone shouldn't have to suffer because a few people break the rules.
The strictness of the American schools always baffle me, in Italy most professors in high schools garant the students permission to exit class even to simply get coffee or stretch their legs (even to smoke until it was made illegal for and near minors)
Dude, which Italy you're describing? Access to the restroom wasn't restricted, but coffee breaks were allowed only during the 15 minutes break ( mid morning) or lunch break. And if you were caught of abusing the restroom you were reported and checked for medical issues, smoking and sometimes searched for drugs dealing. Ok is the banana's country, but never seen breaks given like you're saying. Not. Once.

Bill the school district for all pain and suffering caused by these actions including emotional distress. This policy can lead to bladder infections and a whole host of other medical issues. I’d report this to the P.T.A., and the school board and retain an attorney. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Whenever they pulled c**p like that I didn't know that anything I signed under the age of 18 without parental consent was not legal this led to excessive absences because I refused to even go to school on days that I felt like my persistent stomach issues would interfere with what I felt pressured to sign or agree to. eventually many teachers changed their policies but it still one of those things that make me livid just thinking about it

This teacher sounds like your typical crusty, bitter old bat who should have retired 10 years ago. It also reminded me of a time back when I was in grade school. I started to feel nauseous and went up to the teacher's desk to tell her. Her response was curt and b****y. I then puked on her desk, much to the amusement of the rest of the class. Instant karma!

The way the teacher handled this is appalling, but I don't see how this is even an issue. When I was in junior high and high school, there was plenty of time between classes and each class was only 50 minutes. I don't recall ever needing to use the restroom during a class and the only time I had to leave a class for an admin visit was when I was called by admin, so I had no control over that. If kids are abusing bathroom visits to get out of class, there are way better ways to handle it.

This really dates me, but it reminds me of the movie "Driving Miss Daisy". Morgan Freeman is driving "Miss Daisy" played by Jessica Tandy and starts to pull the car over because he has to pee. She has a fit and tells him to just hold it. He drives on a bit and then proceeds to pull over. She starts in again and he politely informs her that he is a grown man and he knows when he needs to "make water". I'm pretty sure the majority of these kids aren't taking advantage and simply need to use the restroom. Give them the benefit of the doubt. And I pity ANY teacher who would have tried to stop my child from going to the nurse's office. They shouldn't have to announce to the class what their "issue" might be. This is especially true of girls who may have just started having a period and are unprepared.

This "teacher" should be dismissed. This is completely unacceptable. If my child was in her class, I would be at the school EVERY day, observing "Ms. White", taking notes and reporting on her. I remeber when i was 13 and felt my period coming during class. It was 5 Minutes before the break- i knew it couldn't wait. So i asked to go to the bathroom- motion got denied. So i told my teacher :"I have got my period so i go to the f** bathroom. Talk to my parents of you have a problem with that" (well i was young- i might have a different wording for something like that today). My teacher did go to my parents with me and apologized to all of us :)
I just ask kids if they can wait. 90% of the time they say they can. The other 10% genuinely need to go. Simple!
That reviews and defines appropriate use of the bathroom, and need to see the nurse. Put it on paper for the students and their parents. Let them know, that they will not be denied the use of the bathroom or to see the nurse. But guidelines for the nurse should be discussed. Bathroom trips should never be denied! Trips to the nurse, should be quietly addressed between the student and teacher, and kept personal. The teacher should know, that if a student goes to see the nurse, she can professionally evaluate the child! And treat accordingly. But to deny a child a visit to the nurse, and then have that same child have a medical emergency? I would sue the living c**p out of the teacher and the school! This school needs some serious help. Also, involve a civil rights atty. to discuss with them what is ok to refuse, and what is not, on the part of the school and teachers. And above all, involve the parents!!
I just graduated high school and I always thought this rule was stupid, plus, in 7/8th grade I unexpectedly got my period (I didn't know any better to track my periods back then to prepare for them), and asked the teacher if I could go to the bathroom. It wasn't until I actually SAID the words "female emergency" that he actually let me go. BUT, even then he said "I'll let u go this time, but next time, you can't go." F*****g a*****e. Apart from being illegal, child abuse, and so on, I would go absolutely mental on this, and the teacher would not know what hit them. I would throw the absolute book at them, and if they didn't understand, go for criminal child abuse charges. This is just so not on. There is a reason for things happening, and sometimes, kids just have to go. I can understand if it is being disruptive, and they go continuously, and it being abused, but this??? No way... Children are not prisoners or the school property to do with as they please. If that is what they think, it will be a rude awakening for them.
Show or email the note to the district superintendent and tell him/her that s/he has 24 hours to "fix" this or I will send a copy of it to all local TV stations and newspapers and the local school board.
Just file a criminal complaint against the teacher and school about child abuse as well as forcing the child to enter into a contract, and see just how fast the teachers and principals head will spin once the school board gets their hands on them...
Load More Replies... I was shocked the first time I realized kids in US schools can't go to the bathroom when they need to and need something called "hall passes" to use the halls. I don't know how the school system over there works but here in Germany you get breaks ranging from 10 to 45 mins (lunch) between every 45 min classes. Kids can go to the bathroom or eat and use the halls as they like during breaks.
For one thing, Mrs. White shouldn’t be a teacher because she can’t write proper English. Her note said “have went” rather than “have gone”. The administration is using the term scholars to refer to the students. Not all students are scholars. I find the entire note ridiculous. Students in Europe where I live bring water bottles to school so they can drink whenever they are thirsty. Granted, there are plenty of children who abuse bathroom breaks, but this is supposed to be a school and not a prison. I would remove my child from that class and make sure that teacher was reprimanded. I would also make sure the school board addressed the issue publicly.

There should be zero tolerence of teachers that treat students without dignity and respect. Contracts like these should be reviewed and approved by the admin and pta board before being used. Legally, I need to know where the students are at all times. I'm responsible for them. Also, legally, I cannot restrict a student's ability to take care of basic physical needs. If there is a reason that I cannot trust the student to go to the bathroom and to come back from the bathroom, then I need to work with the student, administrators, and parents to find a solution.
I told my son if he really had to go pee and his teacher ever told him no again, that he was to just pee in her trash can instead of wetting his pants.
I taught for a year and did several years of subbing and always let the my kids go to the bathroom. If we had something coming up where they couldnt be interrupted, they'd get a bathroom break. No one abused it, even when I subbed.

We had something similar to this when I was in middle school. They were little cards with either 1 to 5 or 1 to 7( cant remember for sure). But they would punch the number out when you went to the bathroom. I dont think it was used for nurses visits. But i do think it was for the entire month and you got a new one each month and if you didn't keep up with it (lost it) you couldn't go to the bathroom.
this is the same policy in my school, some cant even go once during the year without trouble.
While the note was completely wrong, and maybe teaching isn't the right job for this teacher I do kind of feel for them, and the level of frustration that must have led to it. Saying students don't abuse the right to go to the bathroom is just ignorant. There are ways around this kind of situation though. I in no way ever think access to the school nurse should be restricted. But I do think being allowed to go for water and go to the bathroom should be allowed/disallowed at the teachers discretion at that age, because students do abuse it. This is 8th grade, these are not small children, they are about 13, they have control of their bladders and understand the concept of waiting and appropriate timing. They have plenty of breaks between classes and at lunch time to go to the bathroom and have water (if they didn't have the sense to bring a drink bottle). Heaven knows how I managed to not go to the bathroom regularly in class back in school.
Are the teacher paying for the possible young onset incontinence, UTI and variable other problems you can get from not enough water consumption and from not going to the bathroom when needed? Never mind the bladder damage might not be able to be fixed. Some does not have plenty of breaks, some does not have enough bathrooms. Some have bladders with bad timing. None of which the children or other humans in general should be punished for - least of all by someone whose body don't have to take the side effects of the decisions.

Load More Replies... Well, this is a bit extreme, but we don't know WHY the teacher instituted this policy. Perhaps there is an issue with kids constantly asking to leave class. On the flip side, I'd like teachers to be a least a little tough, instead of treating 13 & 14 year olds like they are helpless babies. And on that note, this says 8th grade class. So, why does that student (who must be at at least 13 or 14) have the handwriting skills of a 6 year old.
First I have seen adults with far worst writing skills, and 2nd it does not matter the reason you cannot force a child to sign a contract. If there is an issue with them constantly leaving the classroom to use the restroom, go to the nurse or speak with the admin maybe there is are other issues. Either way this teacher has no right to make them sign a contract. And only being able to go twice in that period of time is crazy.

I think, she thinks way too much of herself! Firstly, she is in violation of these kids civil rights to take care of bodily functions and seek treatment from the nurse! I’m not one, as a nurse to say, sue, but this teacher, if you can call her that, is so wrong, she should have some hard punishment for her treating her students like this, especially if what she did, is not within or near, the guidelines of school policy, let alone personal rights of a student! She violated school policy for treatment of the students, and she violated their civil rights. While I don't agree with this, the article is just wrong where it says kids are responsible. They CAN be responsible, but a lot aren't. I have personally seen coats stuffed in toilets, breakfasts stuffed in toilets, wet toilet paper all over the ceiling, flooded toilets, and puddles of urine all over the floor so bad I thought the bathroom was flooded--I saw this at least three times last school year. Also, there was a girl who pooped on the floor daily 2 years ago.
When I was a freshman in HS, I had a teacher that didn't let me go to the bathroom (they were literally right outside of the classroom) so I asked her if she just wanted me to pee in my seat. She said no you won't do that. And I said well I can't hold it in and walked out, used the restroom. When I was walking back out she was standing outside the classroom waiting for me, threatening to give me detention if I didn't apologize. I told her I had nothing to apologize for, I needed to use the restroom and I wasn't going to embarrass myself in front of the classroom if I had peed myself. She let me off with a "warning" then would let me go whenever I asked after that. It's a joke. This is why teachers who actually deserve recognition don't get it, because of controlling freaks like these.
To be fair I definitely understand where the teacher is coming from. Unless you have tutored or been in the classroom yourself you will not understand the level of disrespect kids have for bathroom breaks. I think it's a great way to teach kids that their time is valuable and that they can spend an hour or 2 without having to go to the bathroom/walk the halls/do anything but classwork. It's a little harsh and I think her approach could be more mild but I side with the teacher in this case.
