While most people can barely watch horror films like Paranormal Activity without going into a full-blown breakdown, aka putting all the lights on in the house and not being able to sleep for days straight, some people like the thrill of it. They sleep like babies, never flinch and have the guts for the scariest things.

If you’re one of them, the two notoriously bone-chilling corners of Reddit known as the subreddits “Weird” and “Oddly Terrifying” must ring a bell to you. The latter one is home to 2M members who enjoy watching all the oddly terrifying content posted there.

So thanks to them, today, we have a great selection of terrifying photographs that prove a single shot on camera can be worthy of thousands of nightmares. Get ready to roll up in your blanket like a burrito (trust me, it helps!) and enjoy the list at your own risk.

Bored Panda reached out to S. Elizabeth, writer and creator of the “Unquiet Things” blog, as well as the author of “The Art of the Occult: A Sourcebook For The Modern Mystic”. She has been interested in scary things that freak others out ever since she was 5 years old. “I saw a Dracula on an episode of Scooby Doo. I’d never even heard of vampires before, let alone seen one, and learning that there were blood-thirsty creatures who hover outside your home, just awaiting an invitation inside so they could poke their fangs through your neck and drink you up like a platelet-flavored Capri Sun scared me so badly that I’ve never been the same since.”

But at some point in her childhood, S. Elizabeth realized her panic and fright regarding the bloodsuckers and monsters from outer space had turned into fascination. “Whereas I would once hide my face behind a pillow when something scary was happening, I now began to feel the itchy urge to peek.” As she grew older, S. Elizabeth said that her fascination with fearsome things turned into a full-blown obsession. “From literature and film, to music and art, from that time forward, I was hungry for all things unearthly and strange, ghastly and ghostly, gruesome and grotesque,” she said.

Great, just another Australian thing to keep me up at night! How do you people live in terror? 😱

View More Replies...

S. Elizabeth argues that there are things people are deeply fearful of now that they were many hundreds of years ago. “No doubt they will strike fear into the hearts of future generations. Death and loss and aging, war and sickness and disease. Fear of the unknown!”

Having said that, she believes that the details change with the times. “Maybe those fears take different shapes, but until we figure out how to stop the aging process and become immortal (like those vampires!), unless we get a handle on our violent human tendencies, unless as a people we learn to become more compassionate and empathetic—none of those things are going to change, and those fears will continue to plague us in some form or another.”

S. Elizabeth also explained: “maybe it seems like we’re more scared now than we ever were, what with our smart phones and a million apps with a million social media accounts bombarding us with all of the horrors of the modern world, 24 hours a day. As a lifelong horror enthusiast (and someone who is afraid of a lot of things, like A LOT), I feel that I’m not too far off.”

The fact alone that the only thing they eat is very low on nutrition but high on fibre, it's slowly but surely grinding down their teeth so they'll starve to death. They also apparently don't understand what rain is, they just sit there, get wet and wonder why.

I wonder if they were always like this, or gotten like this over time. Koalas are literally getting dumber continuously. They only eat eucalyptus and that doesn't have all the nutrients they really need. Would the brains have gotten smooth because of that, or were they smooth already? (also kind of looks like a tongue, or is that just me?)

The Koala family (Phascolarctidae) dates at least to 15 million years ago, by 11 to 5 million years ago (Late Miocene), koalas began to adapt to drier Eucalyptus dominated open woodlands including skull adaptations e.g. strengthened jaws for chewing tough Eucalyptus leaves. Evolution at it's best. They might be smooth brained but they seem to know something!

So how do they recognise a plastic bottle of water and drink from it - after being burnt in bushfire? Koalas never seek water to drink - moisture all from leaves.

As of this year, they became officially endangered. It's not (directly) related to intelligence, though- loss of habitat and disease are the big reasons.

Sulci and gyri are no way to measure intelligence. If a human was placed in a eucalyptus tree and given a handful of raw tubers, could they know to eat them? Would they need to? Wouldn't they prefer to choose their own!

Wow- That is utterly amazing re koalas! It puts them -in my head anyway - into a whole other category. I mean, we, as humans, can personify and find a kinship with pretty much all critters- in the sense of endowing them with some human characteristic, etc. Reading this about them and the leaves, and how their brains are simply physically incapable of processing things like other animals and/or humans. Well, it is a completely different take on them for me. Makes them more alien than other critters by comparison.

makes ense. They can't dedicate much to higher brain functions when they are eating something that is legit high on toxins, and low on nutrition. also, Baby koalas have to eat Mom's poop, just to get the required bacteria to be able to digest whatever the f*ck they can from all those eucalyptus leaves. Also a baby koala must hang on to Mom for dear life, coz if he/she drops to the ground, either he's immediately past tense, else mom won't care to pick him/her up( What with all that little nutrition), so he/she is past tense all the same...
