While most people can barely watch horror films like Paranormal Activity without going into a full-blown breakdown, aka putting all the lights on in the house and not being able to sleep for days straight, some people like the thrill of it. They sleep like babies, never flinch and have the guts for the scariest things.

If you’re one of them, the two notoriously bone-chilling corners of Reddit known as the subreddits “Weird” and “Oddly Terrifying” must ring a bell to you. The latter one is home to 2M members who enjoy watching all the oddly terrifying content posted there.

So thanks to them, today, we have a great selection of terrifying photographs that prove a single shot on camera can be worthy of thousands of nightmares. Get ready to roll up in your blanket like a burrito (trust me, it helps!) and enjoy the list at your own risk.

Bored Panda reached out to S. Elizabeth, writer and creator of the “Unquiet Things” blog, as well as the author of “The Art of the Occult: A Sourcebook For The Modern Mystic”. She has been interested in scary things that freak others out ever since she was 5 years old. “I saw a Dracula on an episode of Scooby Doo. I’d never even heard of vampires before, let alone seen one, and learning that there were blood-thirsty creatures who hover outside your home, just awaiting an invitation inside so they could poke their fangs through your neck and drink you up like a platelet-flavored Capri Sun scared me so badly that I’ve never been the same since.”

But at some point in her childhood, S. Elizabeth realized her panic and fright regarding the bloodsuckers and monsters from outer space had turned into fascination. “Whereas I would once hide my face behind a pillow when something scary was happening, I now began to feel the itchy urge to peek.” As she grew older, S. Elizabeth said that her fascination with fearsome things turned into a full-blown obsession. “From literature and film, to music and art, from that time forward, I was hungry for all things unearthly and strange, ghastly and ghostly, gruesome and grotesque,” she said.

Great, just another Australian thing to keep me up at night! How do you people live in terror? 😱

View More Replies...
View more commentsArrow down menu

S. Elizabeth argues that there are things people are deeply fearful of now that they were many hundreds of years ago. “No doubt they will strike fear into the hearts of future generations. Death and loss and aging, war and sickness and disease. Fear of the unknown!”

Having said that, she believes that the details change with the times. “Maybe those fears take different shapes, but until we figure out how to stop the aging process and become immortal (like those vampires!), unless we get a handle on our violent human tendencies, unless as a people we learn to become more compassionate and empathetic—none of those things are going to change, and those fears will continue to plague us in some form or another.”

S. Elizabeth also explained: “maybe it seems like we’re more scared now than we ever were, what with our smart phones and a million apps with a million social media accounts bombarding us with all of the horrors of the modern world, 24 hours a day. As a lifelong horror enthusiast (and someone who is afraid of a lot of things, like A LOT), I feel that I’m not too far off.”

I don't think that's weird. Some siblings and especially twins are very close to each other. If they like to live together, then why not? At first I thought the kids might get confused but they grow up knowing all 4 of them and they will instinctively know who is who. Even twins are different in very small ways.

Actually, even twins are more typically different in many ways. I've known personally 5 sets of identical twins and was involved in some research on the subject at one time. More often than people realise twins a) dislike being treated the same b) will deliberately aim for very different lives c) are sometimes no closer than ordinary siblings. This scenario IS unusual and feels a bit too deliberate, possibly for the sensation it might cause. Babies at the same time? I'm not buying the 'want them to grow up together' argument as being the only reason. That would happen even with a few months apart. I'm cynical I know but it does feel a bit too aimed for.

I watched an episode about them once. It was sweet but sad. When one of the couples went out on a date, they pretty much couldn't find anything to say to each other. They didn't get happy until they went back home and were reunited with their twin, and that's the one with whom they did most of the talking.

Kinda weird that the adult twins are dressed the same. Even when twin kids are dressed the same, I find it creepy (don't you want your kids to be their own individuals?).

Actually Cindy you're spot on. I mention elsewhere that I've been involved in some research into twin relationships and personally known a few. They more often than not dislike being treated the same as they are very much individuals. It can cause issues and problems later even if they find it cute when small. This isn't a very typical scenario.

Not always. Imagine a separated set of identical twins raised in vastly different ways. One drinks and smokes a lot, the other doesn't. . They would likely look very similar but not the same.

Identical twins may seem identical to look at but actually be Fraternal. Good example of this is the Olsen twins, who have DNA similar to siblings but not twins. Without testing there is no way to know for sure that the people mentioned here are identical twins.

Surprising they didn't have twins. Monozygotic twins having children with other monozygotic twins (as above) are statistically much more likely to have twins themselves (monozygotic twins are the more likely outcome)

Siblings-in-law. The kids, genetics aside, are double cousins, since each of child A's parents is a sibling to one of child B's parents. Happened in my family when my grandfather and his brother married sisters (no twins involved).

Why though? They're both married to different people and seem to be in a monogamous relationship with their partner. Society doesn't frown upon people living with their siblings. No incest is happening. So what's wrong about it?
