Art isn't created just to please our eyes; it also transfers ideas and provokes thought on social problems. Austrian cartoonist Gerhard Haderer has been producing satirical illustrations and cartoons for adults for decades now, highlighting the awful problems with society.

Gerhard Haderer had even faced the court for one of his brutally honest books, The Life of Jesus. It triggered violent reactions, because of the society problems discussed in it, in Europe, especially from the Catholic Church. The story culminated in 2005 when Haderer was convicted in Greece for insulting the religious community and was given a six-month suspended sentence in absentia. A few months later, however, this verdict was corrected on appeal, and Gerhard Haderer was acquitted.

The artist developed his realistic style when working as a graphic designer and illustrator for advertising agencies early in his career. It wasn't until a cancer operation in 1985 when Gerhard abandoned his commercial dreams and became a freelance caricaturist and satirical illustrator, mainly focusing on social issues. Scroll down to check out his unsettling and at times scary cartoons and vote for your favorites.

Did you know that a couple of years ago, there were more selfie related deaths than shark related deaths?

This I do not understand. I like reading books in paper but there is nothing wrong with electronic editions. If anything, they are more eco friendly. It is still the same activity just different medium.

I've heard it said, how ironic it is that often times today, family time is getting everyone to put down their small screens and all look at the same big screen for a while.

No good deed goes unpunished. Follow the trail of everything from Fair Trade goods to agriculture as a whole to donated clothing and you'll find things aren't always as simple as they seem.

And the tomato from Ghana is probably much more tasty. But we prefer cheap junk.

Yes.. When I fly to Ghana to see my friends, one of the best things are to cook with fresh fruits and vegetables!

To answer Brivid, you will often find what was once donated sold for somewhat lower prices making the seamstress and others who worked hard having a hard time selling their stuff in Ghana or other lower income countries. Too much donation stagnates markets.

The thing is, there are more nutrients left in the one regularly grown tomato

This is VERY important message to get out; most people don't know that our good intentions are destroying local economies.

People ignore this truth which is the same for wheat, chicken, ... resulting in destruction of local economy, increase of poverty and immigration to Europe, America, ... .

this is about globalization - imported tomatoes out selling local tomatoes.. local farmer can't compete with produce from factory farms.. Local supermarket buys from factory farms and agri-businesses.. Buy local folks.. this is how it is in Western North Carolina, USA.. Grocery stores selling produce from Israel and Mexico and S. America.. apples from China.. It is crazy.. Local farmers have no access to market.

She only has one tomato because that’s all she could grow with the resources she had access to.

This is way President Trump is stopping everything from being sent here from other countries...Because it's cheaper... Instead of buying all American! Because if it would cost a little more... It will start to go down as time passes when Americans start spending there money here!!!

I don't understand how those tomatoes would be cheaper considering you'd have to factor in shipping. "Tomatoes from Europe" is not exactly comparable to something manufactured, say, "toys from China"... are they?

GMO! They’re not real tomatoes..chemically grown and manufactured, they can last on the shelf for weeks, shipped while still green. Real tomatoes take time to ripen, don’t always look perfect but taste like a tomato, smell like a tomato and have a limited shelf life. Forty chemically grown tomatoes for the same price as one real tomato. And Nikki D. I’m sure she would sell more than one. It was to illustrate the large difference.

It's a reference to the outcomes of IMF policies and trade agreements. Has little to nothing to do with your donations.

So I can get 40 units for x1 money but I should buy at x1 the unit because of... What? Solidarity? I do not understand the criticism of people saving lives. If it weren't for industrialized agriculture 3/4 of the world would famine. If you want to buy local, do it. If you feel proud because you are helping the little producer, great. If you criticize other people's options of buying cheaper food just because they are poorer than you and cannot afford your lifestyle choices, you are an imbecile.

Okay. So, why don't we use or eat the food made in Europe if we live in Europe? I mean - the transportation has a cost - ecological and economical. Instead we could teach people in Ghana, or any other country where there is a need, how to produce more for their own consumption. Instead of buying food off of them, we could - either simply donate or give them know-how. Think. I promise - it won't kill you.

Surplus European-grown food is being dumped into other nations, and there's so much of it, it's cheaper than native-grown food in those nations. That's what the drawing is saying.

George Orwell- Animal Farm: ''Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."
