11 Useful And Potentially Life-Saving Safety Tips Shared By This TikToker
The world is a wonderful place with lots of amazing people, but sadly, there is a dark side to it. It can get really dangerous when you meet people with some bad intentions. So it is always smart to be aware of your surroundings and just be cautious.
It’s no secret that this applies more to women than men. And there are a few things that are useful to keep in mind. TikToker @spencer.barbosa shared some safety tips that might come in handy one day, not that anyone would want that day to come.

TikToker Spencer Barbosa shared some personal safety tips which are primarily targeted at women, but are useful to know for everyone, and the videos got millions of views

Spencer is a an 18-year-old content creator, entrepreneur, and actress. She has 3.5 million followers on TikTok, 339k followers on Instagram, and she has a YouTube channel with 22k subscribers.
On her biggest platform, TikTok, Spencer shares life hacks, personal thoughts, clothing hauls, and creates inspirational content to motivate other people to reach for their dream lives. Her videos rack up views easily and she goes viral regularly, reaching over a million views per video.
If someone doesn’t leave you alone or is trying to abduct you, try to attract people’s attention to you and scare the attacker by going insane

Most of Spencer’s videos are lighthearted and fun, but there are some more serious ones. Among these are a few videos about women’s safety.
The TikToker starts off by saying that her heart is aching that these types of videos are necessary, but they might potentially save someone’s life. She mentions that the majority of her followers are female and she wants them to be safe.
Don’t put your hair in a ponytail if you’re going for a run alone

If you can’t carry pepper spray, buy bear spray or hairspray and aim at the eyes
The first tip she gives is that if you ever feel followed, someone is touching you and not leaving you alone, or even is trying to abduct you, then you should make sure everyone knows about it and draw everyone’s attention to what is happening. Spencer suggests screaming, barking, biting, and just going as crazy as you can.
The second tip is for those who like to go running. If you’re doing it alone, you should be aware of how you tie your hair, because if you like the comfortable and effortless hairstyle of a ponytail, then you should reconsider it. As Spencer explains, it is very easy for someone to grab you by the hair and drag you.

Spencer lives in Canada and it appears that you can’t have pepper spray on you there. But you can carry bear spray. And if you’re not Canadian and it’s the first time you are hearing about bear spray, or you also live in a country where pepper spray is also illegal or hard to find, Spencer’s advice is to use hairspray instead and aim for the attacker’s eyes.
This video got 1.3 million views and more than 430k people liked it. People in the comments were saying that these tips are actually useful, but that it is sad that women have to go through this. Spencer mentioned that she will be doing more of these videos so that her followers can keep themselves safe.
More attacks happen in stairwells at night, so better use the elevator

Keep your car keys on your nightstand so they’re easily accessible at night

After a while, Spencer returned to the personal safety tips and made two more videos. One of them has 4.9 million views and the other, 3.6 million. So it seems that this topic is really relevant and millions of people find the videos useful.
So, another life-saving tip is to choose an elevator instead of stairs if you’re alone at night, because according to Spencer, more attacks happen in the stairwell. Another thing to consider is where you keep your car keys. If you’re keeping them at the front door, it’s worth moving them to your nightstand. Then if something happens at night, you can grab them and press the panic button to set your car’s alarm off.
Don’t share that you’re alone and what’s your location to everyone on social media
If you feel like someone’s following you, show them your face and take a look at theirs
An important one is to never post your location on social media. Strangers don’t need to know where you are. It is wild, but Spencer claims that she sees a lot of young girls saying that they’re alone. There are people who will take advantage of that so just think twice before posting something.
Here’s an interesting fact: rapists find their targets less attractive after they’ve seen their face. So if you feel like someone is following you, turn your head to show your face. And in the meantime, remember theirs.
Don’t be alone in the dark where you can’t see your surroundings

Don’t make yourself more vulnerable by being on your phone when you’re walking alone
A lot of these tips have to do with people being alone. You just have to be super cautious and aware of your surroundings. For example, if it’s dark, then you should avoid going out alone. And it could be dangerous to text as you will be more vulnerable and will be less likely to notice if someone gets too close for comfort. But if the worst happens and someone wants to take you, the girl encourages you not to worry about being kind and just smack with all your might with your elbow.
Trick people into thinking that a man lives with you by putting big worn shoes outside

If someone is grabbing you, concentrate all your energy into smacking them with your elbow

At the beginning of the year, a video went viral of a girl finding ‘1F’ written on her snowy garbage can. TikTok users were convinced that someone marked for themselves that one female is living in that house so that they maybe could go back at night. It’s really creepy that you can’t even feel safe in your own house.
Spencer has a tactic for that: go to a thrift store and buy a huge pair of men’s boots or ask someone you know who has some to spare. Make them look dirty and used and put them in front of your house. It will create an illusion that a big man is living in the house and hopefully it should discourage any invaders.
What do you think of these tips? Have you ever had to use any of these? Also, share your tips in the comments so more people will know how to protect themselves!
@spencer.barbosait’s so sad that i even have to make this😔 #safety #personalsafety #lifesaving #advice #female♬ Aesthetic – Xilo

The TikToker got very much love for posting the videos, with almost all of the reactions being very positive

As a former security guard and Krav Maga practitioner for many years (our Krav school also provides training and lectures on how to avoid getting into a fight to begin with) I have to say most of the things this girl says make absolute sense. But I absolutely agree there is a lot of terrible info on self defence out there. There's this youtube channel called: Reality Check Self Defence. They're like the mythbusters of bad self defence tips. Very interesting and entertaining in my opinion.
Load More Replies...It never ceases to amaze me just how much detail of their personal life people post on social media. Here we are in Paris, next week Berlin etc. Might as well just say, "Attention thieves our house is empty for a few weeks."
Yep. And they'll tag friends who are with them without permission. I don't post things about where I am on social media. I don't want other people posting it without my permission.
Load More Replies...The pony tail is bullshit. Do you know how hard it is to grab the ponytail of someone who is running? They'll go for an arm first. Take the elevator? Yeah sure, so you can be shut in a small compartment with a potential attacker, good idea! NOT. Where there is light there is sight? Yup, and a potential attacker can see you're alone, good idea! NOT. Also, push the panic button on your car fob? NOBODY reacts to car alarms going off anymore, it just happens way too often.
Elevators often have cameras which is a deterrent to criminals
Load More Replies...THANK YOU. The fact we have to do all this s**t all the time is exhausting. Maybe people could just stop attacking/assaulting/kidnapping each other. That's a thought.
Load More Replies...Here's another tip, walk as if you own the place. Don't appear scared/nervous/an easy victim. Shoulders back, head high, elbows out, make eye contact.
I don't wear headphones or ear buds when walking so I can listen to what is going on around me. No surprises
This. I tried to pass a young woman on the MUP one day who was running with ear buds in. She didn't hear my loud bike bell or me calling out "Passing on your left". I was almost at her shoulder before she knew I was there, and this was an isolated stretch of pathway in the middle of nowhere.
Load More Replies...I'm sorry but why are these types of posts always targeted at women? Most of the time these are basic safety skills and tips that EVERYONE should use. I'm a 43yr man and I do a lot of these types of things. It's called protecting yourself. Woman aren't the only ones that should to do this.
Because women are exponentially more likely to be sexually assaulted by a stranger. Yes, of course, men should do things to protect themselves. But many of these tips (like "don't wear a ponytail" and "put men's boots outside your door") are specifically geared towards towards women and preventing sexual assault.
Load More Replies...Why should you not be on your phone? If you get attacked, the person at the other end can call the police at once. I always call someone when I have to walk alone at night and share my position.
I think she was referring to people who are texting, reading or watching something. It distracts from people watching their surroundings. And if you're texting or something other than on a phone call people aren't going to have the time to text that they're being attacked etc.

Well but the third one she isnt trying to take pride in anything shes literally trying to encourage people to do number 2.

You're just gonna freak out people about certain situations for no reason... The one "carry pepper spray just in case" could cover most of these situations That is quite a creepy content to look at. Also one person no being either a security expert or someone who deals with attacks everyday sharing that many "tips" is even creepier, it gives the false sentiment that she deals /used to deal with this every day, propping an insecurity sentiment...I wouldn't call it "helping people living their best life", rather using fear to generate traffic, while actual security professionnals would do a better job at a/talk about the likeness of an attack, with statistics, and b/provide better safety tips based on real experiences. Why not give one of them a platform instead?
Well why would you go out with a neck? Just dont have a neck or any physical body :)

Check to see the laws in your state or country to see if it is legal there to carry and use a pepperball gun for self-defense. This will be a way to attack from a greater distance than regular pepper spray. Grizzly bear mace is thicker than regular pepper spray, almost like paint thinner. Will keep the creep vulnerable longer, giving you more time to escape. Watch youtube videos from professional self defense instructors to learn how to escape from various positions and holds, if you are unable to attend a self-defense class in person.
Please talk to a real security expert, and not TikTok.
I'm good at going absolutely bonkers (barking, screaming/screeching, snarling, etc.), so thank you :>
The scariest thing is that we have to share/know/talk about this kind of tips... we live in a world where a woman or man can't just go for a run/walk at any time of the day, without having thoughts on the back of their head about the kidnappers or other sick people out there!!!
People need to understand that most of the time the kidnappings and attacks are not random but people who know each other.
Load More Replies...Running with your hair down would be an absolute nightmare, and would ruin the run for most ppl.
The pony tail one is actually very true. A survey from the 70ies answered by actual rapists revealed that plenty of them picked their victims because they had ponytails and/or easy to remove clothes.
While I appreciate the intent of this, it feels like we are putting responsibility for (preventing/stopping) attacks on the victim. Instead we need to give men tips on how not to attack others.
Because criminals are sociopaths who are not keen to "behave"...if it was that easy, jails would be empty. And taking safety precautions is under your control. Would you ever say "Don't ask me to lock the door. Ask thieves not to steal."
Load More Replies...Pro tip:You don't need to cover 90 of the screen with your face when giving advice.Even better:Don't be a tiktoker
The the ponytail one had me rolling my eyes just becauase any women with long hair HAS to have their hair in a ponytail. Literally, what is the alternative? At th3 ejd of the day, just be vigilant. Be aware of your surroundings and use good judgement. What i don't like about these advise things is that it puts all the responsibility on women and leads to victim blaming. "Well she walked down a stairwell at night, no wonder she was attacked! She shouldn't have done that!"
I take my dogs with me on a run. My furry bodyguards that look at everyone as a bad guy keep me feeling safe
I had a problem with a stalker in the early 2000s. Social media and smartphones weren't around yet, but it was really scary how much info he collected on me. He knew where I worked & lived, what my hours were, what my car was & where I parked, my birthday, where I shopped, who my friends were and where we hung out. He got my address, my unlisted phone number, and my parents' address. It taught me to be a lot more careful about accidentally revealing personal details. Always lock your car. Be protective about any paperwork like mail, bills, receipts - don't hold them so people can see the writing, or leave it sitting out on your car seat or desk at work. Avoid clothing or accessories (keychains, t-shirts) that advertise your work, apartment complex, gym, or favorite hangouts. Don't leave your mail sitting in the mailbox. Only wear your work i.d. badge when you're required to. It's so easy to leave little clues that a motivated person can use against you.
Unbelievable! Hope it's ancient history.
Load More Replies...It never hurts to have some odd ideas. Many of these sound reasonable. I am baffled at the idea of using your keys to call an alert (how?), although they're fine for punching someone. Also, the hazards of stairwells? Maybe that's meaningful in some cities? You'd have to go well out of your way to find a stairwell to lurk in, here.
I'm pretty butch looking, so I don't get a lot of harassment. But I pity the person who gets the full on Tarzan yell in their face.
I noticed a lot of women walk around like they are in the safest place on earth. They don't look around to their surroundings or pay attention to people paying attention to them discreetly. You need to stay off the phone or at least pay attention to your surroundings when doing so. Never go alone at night or running. Use common sense. Always have an escape route as you are moving along. Don't be afraid to dial 911 even if it turns out to be a false alarm. Better wrong than sorry. Don't wear provocative clothing and think no one will dare do anything to you. Never enter where you live or employment on social media. Even law enforcement use social media to capture criminals.
The tired old saw of “act CRAZY, pee on yourself and vomit” mixed in with sensible tactics that have been shown to actually be useful, like yelling FIRE (or STOP or GO AWAY!) or kicking and striking. Not once, until it works. Better to listen to your instincts, and take a good women’s self-defense course *before* you need to use it.
So a kid on Tic Toc just posted everything my mother told me 30 years ago...
Don't look like a victim... Stand tall, keep your head up. Criminals are looks for the weak, so don't appear weak, walk confidently.
Being aware of your surroundings is HUGE - no matter what the situation. If a situation looks or feels wrong, and your intuition tells you to get out - LISTEN TO IT. You'll know it when you feel it - pay attention. I drove several hundred miles overnight from GA to VA, got a late start, got delayed by accidents on the highway, etc. 10 hour trip turned into over 15 hours of driving. I had my adult son with me, but he hadn't slept in over 48 hrs, so he was zonked out in the passenger's seat. I pulled into a rest area to take a break about 2am, where there were 3 other cars in the parking lot. Looked to my left, and locked eyes with a large, very angry looking man, leaning against the front of his car, parked directly in front of the only door to the women's restroom. No other people walking around - just him & me. I pulled back out of the lot & went to the next exit where there was a well-lit, 24/hr convenience store w/a restroom.
She referred to women as 'females', I thought we weren't allowed to do that anymore, or is that just men? Good article, if anything can make women feel safer or a bit more aware is a great thing, just sad you need this conversation in the first place.
Not in the US of A baby. Every state allows some form of concealed carry. But yes, I guess I should've been more inclusive in my original statement. Don't know a lot about other countries' gun laws but that they aren't as liberal as the US.
Load More Replies...Another life saving tip....Keep a phone in the bathroom . I know that sounds weird but a lot of ppl run into bathrooms when they are getting invaded or robbed. And no one has phones in the bathroom to call for help. It doesn't have to be a landlone of course, but I would have a paid to go cell and have it turned off to conserve battery like under the sink and then use it to call 911. I actually would suggest to have a cell phone in each and every room except for those that have landlines like bedrooms, kitchens etc... people don't realize that, that will help in so many ways.
Bear spray and pepper spray are considered assault weapons in many regions. There are bray spray attacks being reported all the time and who knows how many of them are for self-defense because the person spraying is automatically the bad guy and being charged. I feel much of this is fear-mongering and preparing, or getting ready for self-defense and nothing about prevention. Probably because there's no reason anyone should have to be in that kind of ordeal at all. Sporting a ponytail will not guarantee you'll be attacked. I wear them all the time. I've had my hair pulled less (accidentally) then with it down. The car horn thing is not going to work. People ignore those sounds and find them a nuisance than think someone is in distress. No one is going to think to check on the car owner in their suite. You would have to establish that warning system to the neighbours and hope they're onboard with the idea. Much of what this girl says will either not help or screw you over in the end.
Oh God, you live in a hell hole. I learn more and more horrid things about the US every day. THIS IS NOT NORMAL!
There is sexual assault going on all over the world, not just in the US
Load More Replies...I disagree with the phone one. I have often called a friend or family member when i am walking to my car at night, letting them know i was just calling "Just in case" something happened to me they would know ASAP and could call 911 and tell them exactly where i am.
i think by don't be on your phone, they meant don't be texting or distracted by your phone so you don't know what's happening around you
Load More Replies...Fear-mongering has always been profitable. Most women (in the US where I live) are going to die of heart disease. So, before you start worrying about whether to wear your hair in a ponytail, review how to reduce your risk of heart disease. I mean, seriously, she's giving tips on how to wear your hair to avoid death....when there are risks many magnitudes greater than that. She should be ashamed of herself, as should the person who posted this harmful content here on BP.
the biggest question I have is how much of theese stuff does the woman who posted it actually do?😂 probably none...
You're an MRA and you just attack women on every topic, no matter what. No matter what the subject is.
