Spencer is a an 18-year-old content creator, entrepreneur, and actress. She has 3.5 million followers on TikTok, 339k followers on Instagram, and she has a YouTube channel with 22k subscribers.
On her biggest platform, TikTok, Spencer shares life hacks, personal thoughts, clothing hauls, and creates inspirational content to motivate other people to reach for their dream lives. Her videos rack up views easily and she goes viral regularly, reaching over a million views per video.

The TikToker starts off by saying that her heart is aching that these types of videos are necessary, but they might potentially save someone’s life. She mentions that the majority of her followers are female and she wants them to be safe.

The first tip she gives is that if you ever feel followed, someone is touching you and not leaving you alone, or even is trying to abduct you, then you should make sure everyone knows about it and draw everyone’s attention to what is happening. Spencer suggests screaming, barking, biting, and just going as crazy as you can.
The second tip is for those who like to go running. If you’re doing it alone, you should be aware of how you tie your hair, because if you like the comfortable and effortless hairstyle of a ponytail, then you should reconsider it. As Spencer explains, it is very easy for someone to grab you by the hair and drag you.

Spencer lives in Canada and it appears that you can’t have pepper spray on you there. But you can carry bear spray. And if you’re not Canadian and it’s the first time you are hearing about bear spray, or you also live in a country where pepper spray is also illegal or hard to find, Spencer’s advice is to use hairspray instead and aim for the attacker’s eyes.
This video got 1.3 million views and more than 430k people liked it. People in the comments were saying that these tips are actually useful, but that it is sad that women have to go through this. Spencer mentioned that she will be doing more of these videos so that her followers can keep themselves safe.

So, another life-saving tip is to choose an elevator instead of stairs if you’re alone at night, because according to Spencer, more attacks happen in the stairwell. Another thing to consider is where you keep your car keys. If you’re keeping them at the front door, it’s worth moving them to your nightstand. Then if something happens at night, you can grab them and press the panic button to set your car’s alarm off.

TikTok users were convinced that someone marked for themselves that one female is living in that house so that they maybe could go back at night. It’s really creepy that you can’t even feel safe in your own house.
Spencer has a tactic for that: go to a thrift store and buy a huge pair of men’s boots or ask someone you know who has some to spare. Make them look dirty and used and put them in front of your house. It will create an illusion that a big man is living in the house and hopefully it should discourage any invaders.

As a former security guard and Krav Maga practitioner for many years (our Krav school also provides training and lectures on how to avoid getting into a fight to begin with) I have to say most of the things this girl says make absolute sense. But I absolutely agree there is a lot of terrible info on self defence out there. There's this youtube channel called: Reality Check Self Defence. They're like the mythbusters of bad self defence tips. Very interesting and entertaining in my opinion.

The pony tail is bullshit. Do you know how hard it is to grab the ponytail of someone who is running? They'll go for an arm first. Take the elevator? This. I tried to pass a young woman on the MUP one day who was running with ear buds in. She didn't hear my loud bike bell or me calling out "Passing on your left". I was almost at her shoulder before she knew I was there, and this was an isolated stretch of pathway in the middle of nowhere.

I'm a 43yr man and I do a lot of these types of things. It's called protecting yourself. Woman aren't the only ones that should to do this.
Because women are exponentially more likely to be sexually assaulted by a stranger. Yes, of course, men should do things to protect themselves. Why should you not be on your phone? If you get attacked, the person at the other end can call the police at once. I always call someone when I have to walk alone at night and share my position.
I think she was referring to people who are texting, reading or watching something. It distracts from people watching their surroundings. And if you're texting or something other than on a phone call people aren't going to have the time to text that they're being attacked etc.

You're just gonna freak out people about certain situations for no reason... The one "carry pepper spray just in case" could cover most of these situations That is quite a creepy content to look at. Check to see the laws in your state or country to see if it is legal there to carry and use a pepperball gun for self-defense. This will be a way to attack from a greater distance than regular pepper spray. Grizzly bear mace is thicker than regular pepper spray, almost like paint thinner. Will keep the creep vulnerable longer, giving you more time to escape. Watch youtube videos from professional self defense instructors to learn how to escape from various positions and holds, if you are unable to attend a self-defense class in person.

The pony tail one is actually very true. A survey from the 70ies answered by actual rapists revealed that plenty of them picked their victims because they had ponytails and/or easy to remove clothes.
While I appreciate the intent of this, it feels like we are putting responsibility for (preventing/stopping) attacks on the victim. Instead we need to give men tips on how not to attack others.
Because criminals are sociopaths who are not keen to "behave"...if it was that easy, jails would be empty. And taking safety precautions is under your control. Would you ever say "Don't ask me to lock the door. Ask thieves not to steal."

I had a problem with a stalker in the early 2000s. Social media and smartphones weren't around yet, but it was really scary how much info he collected on me. He knew where I worked & lived, what my hours were, what my car was & where I parked, my birthday, where I shopped, who my friends were and where we hung out. He got my address, my unlisted phone number, and my parents' address. It taught me to be a lot more careful about accidentally revealing personal details. Always lock your car. Be protective about any paperwork like mail, bills, receipts - don't hold them so people can see the writing, or leave it sitting out on your car seat or desk at work. Avoid clothing or accessories (keychains, t-shirts) that advertise your work, apartment complex, gym, or favorite hangouts. Don't leave your mail sitting in the mailbox. Only wear your work i.d. badge when you're required to. It's so easy to leave little clues that a motivated person can use against you.

I noticed a lot of women walk around like they are in the safest place on earth. They don't look around to their surroundings or pay attention to people paying attention to them discreetly. You need to stay off the phone or at least pay attention to your surroundings when doing so. Never go alone at night or running. Use common sense. Always have an escape route as you are moving along. Don't be afraid to dial 911 even if it turns out to be a false alarm. Better wrong than sorry. Don't wear provocative clothing and think no one will dare do anything to you. Never enter where you live or employment on social media. Even law enforcement use social media to capture criminals.
The tired old saw of “act CRAZY, pee on yourself and vomit” mixed in with sensible tactics that have been shown to actually be useful, like yelling FIRE (or STOP or GO AWAY!) or kicking and striking. Not once, until it works. Better to listen to your instincts, and take a good women’s self-defense course *before* you need to use it.

Being aware of your surroundings is HUGE - no matter what the situation. If a situation looks or feels wrong, and your intuition tells you to get out - LISTEN TO IT. You'll know it when you feel it - pay attention. I drove several hundred miles overnight from GA to VA, got a late start, got delayed by accidents on the highway, etc. 10 hour trip turned into over 15 hours of driving. I had my adult son with me, but he hadn't slept in over 48 hrs, so he was zonked out in the passenger's seat. I pulled into a rest area to take a break about 2am, where there were 3 other cars in the parking lot. Looked to my left, and locked eyes with a large, very angry looking man, leaning against the front of his car, parked directly in front of the only door to the women's restroom. No other people walking around - just him & me. I pulled back out of the lot & went to the next exit where there was a well-lit, 24/hr convenience store w/a restroom.
She referred to women as 'females', I thought we weren't allowed to do that anymore, or is that just men? Good article, if anything can make women feel safer or a bit more aware is a great thing, just sad you need this conversation in the first place.

Another life saving tip....Keep a phone in the bathroom . I know that sounds weird but a lot of ppl run into bathrooms when they are getting invaded or robbed. And no one has phones in the bathroom to call for help. It doesn't have to be a landlone of course, but I would have a paid to go cell and have it turned off to conserve battery like under the sink and then use it to call 911. I actually would suggest to have a cell phone in each and every room except for those that have landlines like bedrooms, kitchens etc... people don't realize that, that will help in so many ways.
Bear spray and pepper spray are considered assault weapons in many regions. There are bray spray attacks being reported all the time and who knows how many of them are for self-defense because the person spraying is automatically the bad guy and being charged. I feel much of this is fear-mongering and preparing, or getting ready for self-defense and nothing about prevention. Probably because there's no reason anyone should have to be in that kind of ordeal at all. Sporting a ponytail will not guarantee you'll be attacked. I wear them all the time. I've had my hair pulled less (accidentally) then with it down. The car horn thing is not going to work. People ignore those sounds and find them a nuisance than think someone is in distress. No one is going to think to check on the car owner in their suite. You would have to establish that warning system to the neighbours and hope they're onboard with the idea. Much of what this girl says will either not help or screw you over in the end.

You need to stay off the phone or at least pay attention to your surroundings when doing so. Never go alone at night or running. Use common sense. Always have an escape route as you are moving along. Don't be afraid to dial 911 even if it turns out to be a false alarm. Better wrong than sorry. Don't wear provocative clothing and think no one will dare do anything to you. Never enter where you live or employment on social media. Even law enforcement use social media to capture criminals.
The tired old saw of “act CRAZY, pee on yourself and vomit” mixed in with sensible tactics that have been shown to actually be useful, like yelling FIRE (or STOP or GO AWAY!) or kicking and striking. Not once, until it works. Better to listen to your instincts, and take a good women’s self-defense course *before* you need to use it.

Being aware of your surroundings is HUGE - no matter what the situation. If a situation looks or feels wrong, and your intuition tells you to get out - LISTEN TO IT. You'll know it when you feel it - pay attention. I drove several hundred miles overnight from GA to VA, got a late start, got delayed by accidents on the highway, etc. 10 hour trip turned into over 15 hours of driving. I had my adult son with me, but he hadn't slept in over 48 hrs, so he was zonked out in the passenger's seat. I pulled into a rest area to take a break about 2am, where there were 3 other cars in the parking lot. Looked to my left, and locked eyes with a large, very angry looking man, leaning against the front of his car, parked directly in front of the only door to the women's restroom. No other people walking around - just him & me. I pulled back out of the lot & went to the next exit where there was a well-lit, 24/hr convenience store w/a restroom.
She referred to women as 'females', I thought we weren't allowed to do that anymore, or is that just men? Good article, if anything can make women feel safer or a bit more aware is a great thing, just sad you need this conversation in the first place.
Not in the US of A baby. Every state allows some form of concealed carry. But yes, I guess I should've been more inclusive in my original statement. Don't know a lot about other countries' gun laws but that they aren't as liberal as the US.
Load More Replies... Another life saving tip....Keep a phone in the bathroom . I know that sounds weird but a lot of ppl run into bathrooms when they are getting invaded or robbed. And no one has phones in the bathroom to call for help. It doesn't have to be a landlone of course, but I would have a paid to go cell and have it turned off to conserve battery like under the sink and then use it to call 911. I actually would suggest to have a cell phone in each and every room except for those that have landlines like bedrooms, kitchens etc... people don't realize that, that will help in so many ways.
Bear spray and pepper spray are considered assault weapons in many regions. There are bray spray attacks being reported all the time and who knows how many of them are for self-defense because the person spraying is automatically the bad guy and being charged. I feel much of this is fear-mongering and preparing, or getting ready for self-defense and nothing about prevention. Probably because there's no reason anyone should have to be in that kind of ordeal at all. Sporting a ponytail will not guarantee you'll be attacked. I wear them all the time. I've had my hair pulled less (accidentally) then with it down. The car horn thing is not going to work. People ignore those sounds and find them a nuisance than think someone is in distress. No one is going to think to check on the car owner in their suite. You would have to establish that warning system to the neighbours and hope they're onboard with the idea. Much of what this girl says will either not help or screw you over in the end.

Load More Replies... I disagree with the phone one. I have often called a friend or family member when i am walking to my car at night, letting them know i was just calling "Just in case" something happened to me they would know ASAP and could call 911 and tell them exactly where i am.
i think by don't be on your phone, they meant don't be texting or distracted by your phone so you don't know what's happening around you
