The #10YearChallenge has gone so viral, it even became a meme. But among all the smiles and giggles, a serious version of the hashtag has emerged as well. Recently, people started using it to show the devastating changes our planet has been going through. From environmentalist NGOs and activists to regular internet users, many are saying this is the only #10YearChallenge we shouldn't ignore. I have done saltwater tanks for years now and I can tell you exactly what is happening in both. First, the pictures arent the same location so thats a misleading pile of s**t. The second picture is what is called a bacteria bloom. Its part of the natural cycle of water. The SPS here is still perfectly healthy. Usually this happens where there is an increase in fish population that causes excess waste (poop). I guarantee you that if you took a picture in another 7 days, the coral has its color back. My tank at home would go through this constantly. And in all honesty, the second picture is still very healthy SPS coral.
Load More Replies...I'm a diver and that top photo has fish photoshopped in and the colors enhanced. For one, it's just too much variety (yes, for even 10 years ago) - I don't know how else to describe it. But primarily, if you look elsewhere in the photo, back in the blue part where the color is filtered due to distance, there are no fish swimming around back there. And the small group of fish in the top right corner is further back and should be more blue like the coral below it. I understand why the creator of this comparison did this as our oceans are literally dying. The coral reefs and suffering, and adding in the climate warming up, these higher temps raise the temp of the water which will kill coral. It's a beautiful world down below. If you're not a diver, I encourage you to go while there's still something to see.
I was not about to go into that detail you are absolutely spot on. Thanks!
Load More Replies...The ocean is full of beautiful, interesting, and mysterious creatures. How can anyone neglect the ocean like this? Only about 15% of the ocean's sea creatures have been discovered. If we don't do something, some of the undiscovered creatures could go extinct and we will never know their true beauty and what makes them interesting.
While the point is valid, the photos are not only inaccurate but the first is heavily photoshopped. The fish have been digitally added, the colors enhanced, and the water effect removed to make it look more lively and vibrant than it actually is. Secondly, the coral in the second photo is actually alive but dormant. You can tell because it still has its color - purple, yellow, red, they all show up whereas dead coral is a white-gray-brown. These are also not in the same location. Look at the large expanse of bare ground in the first, where the second one is completely covered. Coral takes thousands of years to grow, not ten.
I cannot help but believe with 110% certainty that the photo of the previous shot was definitely photoshopped. There is no way corals are those bright colors; the fish, yes; but those corals, purple, fire engine red, and bright green? NO way. The bottom photo is more indicative of what an underwater shot would look like.
Ever hear of colours called coral red, coral pink, coral peach etc? Or watched a nature channel?
Load More Replies...Sad. Colors like that in nature are incredible and these f*****g companies just ruin them and blame consumers. Gross.
So sad, I have seen some of this on t.v. and it's devastating, with many reasons that cause this, oil spills, pollution etc, !!!
Sadly we have lost 50% of the oceans corals in the past 30 years due to global warming. Watch "Chasing Coral" on Netflix it is eye opening
The whiteness (and death) of coral is partly due to sunscreen creams. Move onto biological creams instead of the s**t sold in supermarkets. They are not more expensive and they are better for the oceans. Dead corals mean dead fishes and in the end dead oceans.
Dude.... enough with the sunscreen b******t. You ask any reefer and they will tell you its from excess UV light which is a result of low pollution in the atmosphere. So just stop with the silly sunscreen story

This concerns the Aral Lake in Uzebekstian and is not the result of Climate change but Stalin's disastrous ambitions.
Such a drastic change in just three years. It's making me cry seeing how unaware us humans are to all this .
Be nice if the picture was of the same place, from the same angle...
I'm starting to believe... I can't believe I didn't realize the horrid truth before. 😥
This is Photoshopped. Look at the waves in front and back of the pictures.
This doesn't appear to be the same location. Look at the shape of the hills in the background of the top picture -- now compare that profile to the bottom picture. Different topography.
While I agree that there are definite issues that need to be addressed, my biggest problem with most of these images is that they are misleading at best and purposely deceptive at worst. There is no context for many of these so no way to actually tell what the real truth of the situation is. For example, the coral reef pictures, there is no way to tell if they are the same coral reefs, and if fact looking at the terrain they look different. Also the river pictures. If you live near a river you know that certain times of the year, rivers turn muddy because of rain in the mountains running down into the rivers. Has nothing to do with pollution. Or the ocean pollution pictures. You have no idea if that was taken in the same place, or two separate places in different parts of the world. I understand that they are trying to make a point about what is happening, but the purposefully trying to deceive people is the reason a lot of people aren't buying into the global warming hysteria.
Yep. Some pictures show actual facts, but far too many aim for basic emotional responses. And as I said in a comment, it completely undermines the aim of this post. Always the same problem. We have a bug and very real issue (e.g., destruction of our own habitat) but we prefer to use emotions rather than scientific facts, the only facts that can actually move things forward.

I agree but there's only so much the average person can do. Changes need to be made on a world wide level and I don't see anyone putting planet over power yet.

Watch Koko the Gorilla's heart breaking response (in sign language) after she was shown images of the Earth. "Earth is sick, it's too late, Koko sad". *Forgive if I have the exact words wrong.* We are dangerously close to irreparable damage. Half the world cares more about the f*****g Kardashians and what colour lipstick they are wearing. The packaging plastic created by one of the sisters cosmetic lines is an example of the destruction inflicted on the environment. I admire David Attenborough, I can't imagine the heartache he feels with the knowledge he has as an environmentalist watching the Earth become so so sick. :( I think that deniers simply don't want to change or sacrifice their materialism. Sir David makes explicit the reality of us destroying our home. " The garden of Eden is no more". Humans are parasitic. It truly breaks my heart.
Good news is there are less deniers and people are getting more aware. There are solutions (renewables, air carbon capture, reforestation) and there is hope.

I wonder how many of the people that wail 'We must DO something!' have a new cell phone very two years and thousands of travel miles under their betl. My generation (Generation Xers) did jack-sh*t for the climate (for some other issues, yes, but not climate) but I look at my nieces and nephews and their carbon footprint is wayyyy higher than mine ever was.
Our planet is slowly evaporating and crumbling because of our actions and inactions. God, this is saddening and maddening. How can Global Warming and Climate Change be ignored or dismissed when such beautiful bodies of water, lush forests, majestic creatures are literally wasting away! We should do our best to preserve our home. While the pictures can be misleading the situation is still the same as our seasons are changing, rain patterns are amuck, and temperatures are beyond the norm. Our planet is trying to tell us something.
There you can see it. 206 likes here. And the stars get over 280. Great world guys
Are pollution and climate change not two different issues - eg a seal with plastic around its neck considering they are threatening to launch the 'Internet of Things' with a 'billion more devices' coming into our regular daily lives, each wrapped in plastic and ultimately disposable...certainly it doesn't help if people throw in false pics, but some are clearly not false and do make a visual point, though hey let's keep it honest folks!
Many of these photos lacked consistent locations, camera angles, or context. Still, the message is legit: we are f*****g up our closed system by digging up s**t that was safe in the ground when life developed here, concentrating it to toxic levels, burning it, and dumping it all over the place. Again: closed system. We are f*****g it up. It will lead to dystopian -f**k that; this is already dystopic enough. It will lead to much WORSE misery, suffering, and conflict. REGULATE capitalism and get corporate types out of government.
It is so sad\ to see the devestation caused by us, hOW CAN WE STOP IT? How can we change iT? i DON'T BELIEVE THAT THESE PICTURES are purposefully misleading. I have seen some of the destruction caused by some of the glaciers in Alaska. IT is serious! WE need to take it seriously. Global, warming is real!
Part 1 of 2: There's hardly anything that makes me as angry as global warming deniers. When I hear the statement that such changes in climate were always there and are completely natural, I'd seriously like to punch that person. In my childhood (I'm 36) the lakes around me were frozen 15 inch deep and more, and you could ice skate on them with your whole family without needing to worry. It was so cold that I was wearing two long johns under my pants and three pullovers under my jacket. In the last 10 years or so the lakes weren't frozen at all. Older people can tell you stories of our river being frozen. And it's a relatively fast-flowing waterway where large container vessels travel. Do you realize how little 10 or 50 years are in earth's history? Ice ages take millions to several hundred millions of years. You really don't need to be smart to understand what's happening. You can check out the reasons for yourself. Look at satellite pictures of the earth's night side.
Part 2 of 2: There are lights everywhere. There's hardly any notable spot that isn't populated. Open Google Earth and select a random large city, then zoom out and look for forests. There's just concrete -> agricultural land -> coast. Remain in a relatively far out zoomed state and look for a while. Select other countries randomly. It doesn't matter. The longer you look, the colder it will run down your spine. It will really change your perspective when actually seeing it. We massively pollute and deforest the earth 24/7 since hundreds of years and the atmosphere is just a thin layer, a few miles thick. If this development would be natural at this speed, and not induced by humans, then how cold was it 1000 or 2000 years ago? -250 °F? This makes no sense. Or has this speed started just as humanity increased to billions and the industrialisation began? What a coincidence! Considering how unimaginably little a few hundred years are in geological terms. Don't you think? I can't imagine how stupid one have to be to not get this. I'm actually wondering why it doesn't happen even faster, considering what we are doing and at which scale. The saddest part about it is that most of the damage is caused by a few people hoarding ridiculous amounts of money that exists only as a number and is never used.

So sick of everyone doing things like eating meat (awful for freshwater supplies and pollution) while on their computer at the coffee shop they drove to, yet getting on their high horse as if the fact they recycle and hashtag about climate change makes them infallible. The ends do NOT justify the means. If environmentalists were honest about polar bears and ice etc, they'd get taken more seriously by skeptics.
You do realize that climate change is the leading cause of coral reef damage, right? The combination of higher water temperatures and ocean acidification caused directly by carbon dioxide concentrations are the two factors most responsible for coral bleaching. I fully agree that people should stop eating meat and look at all the issues, but getting upset about people acknowledging unfortunate but undeniable facts is silly.
