Karen Confuses The Restaurant Owner With A Waiter, Treats Him Like Garbage, Ends The Night With An Unexpected $4k Bill

Ah, Karen—the female archetype that defines some of the most entitled human beings on this planet. Infamous for their public tantrums at Starbucks and endless requests of speaking to the manager, they are as ignorant as they are annoying. And this restaurant owner knows it from personal experience.

RRinfo posted a story on r/ProRevenge telling how he greeted a group of young women at his restaurant’s door. The main Karen demanded a table because the owner is a “personal friend”. Needless to say, the man had no clue who she was. “Look, you can just give us a table or I can make life very difficult for you,” the leader of the group did not plan to tone it down.

Such a belittling and nasty attitude made the owner realize that he had three choices: call them out, give them a table, or teach them a valuable lesson. As you can guess, the author of this post chose the last option and decided to play along, getting his revenge in the best way possible. Read on for the whole story.

Psst! If you’re in the mood for some more Karen content, check out our previous stories about them right here and here.

Some people actually believe that they deserve more than others. This unearned sense of self-importance lets them think that they are in control and can do whatever they please. However, more often than not, they are just plain annoying. Talking down to people, taking mocking pictures or straight-up threatening to get others fired—they’re the scourge of client-focused businesses and their employees.

People who work in food service are often taught that “the customer is always right”. As you can see from this story, this could not be more wrong. According to Food & Wine, customer entitlement at restaurants is at an all-time high. This is a big issue within the industry, often making workers feel unsafe and underappreciated.

It seems that this horrible customer behavior has worsened since the pandemic began, because “impatience regarding wait times, name-calling, frustration over limited seating and menu options, and disregard for safety protocols” are being recorded more and more often.

One server told Food & Wine that they are expected to provide customers with above-and-beyond service, even if they are abusive: “It makes us feel like we are not allowed to have the expectation of being treated like a person.”

If a person is throwing a fit when the service does not meet their personal expectations and the establishment does not stand up to it—or, even worse, encourages such behavior—the restaurant business might start to seem like a one-way street. However, people tend to forget that a restaurant is like a house and the customers are the guests.

Previously, we reached out to Alexander Kjerulf, author of The Chief Happiness Officer Blog, to talk about the “customer is always right” mentality. He mentioned that some customers seem to be getting worse.

“Especially in America, there’s been an increase in entitled belligerent jerks who think they can get whatever they want if they yell loudly enough about it.” He added, that it’s the boss’ job to deal with such customers: “They’re bad for business, they cost a lot of time and money and they will never be happy no matter what you give them.”

“In fact, if you give in this time, they’ll be back soon with even stupider demands,” Kjerulf added. “On top of that, it feels deeply unfair to see the worst customers get the most benefits through the brattiest behavior.”

Many Redditors left a comment appreciating the man’s efforts

Not to mention they used “past” instead “passed” for “passed away” and “chief “ instead of “chef”. I think technology has spoiled many people to the point that they do not bother to learn how to spell due to the often faulty spell check. I’m very forgiving when it comes to most punctuation (unless it’s a proper article…punctuation/proper sentence structure in comments I normally couldn’t care less about it…obviously, haha ), however, it does bug me when someone cannot spell even the simplest words.

Who gives 3 rounds of drinks away for nothing? A complimentary bottle of cheap wine is one thing but 3 rounds is very different. Technically it could be argued by giving them free alcohol he allowed them to become drunk in order for them to run up a huge bill that they wouldn’t have otherwise. Either way really bad business practices for an “owner of a successful restaurant” to use. I’m not buying his story

I loved when people gave me the "i know the owner" routine. The owners at my last place were there all the time. The best time was when he was in & i said to the table "oh great! He loves to see friends stop by! Let me grab him for you guys to say hi!" & walked away. Got him & he looked at them & was like "Hi, who are you?!" They were super embarrassed & it was well worth the look on their faces.

This story doesn’t make any sense. My family (Italian immigrants) also had a restaurant, I’ve grown up in kitchens, worked in food service, and am a chef myself. There are so many holes in this story. Bringing in other high profile “chiefs” [sic]…? When the restaurant already would have an executive chef? Not just calling this person on her BS and then working a normal night instead of wasting your energy on one table? Free drinks? The tone of the story seems written by someone young with a big imagination but no idea how restaurants actually function.

I don't believe this story...but if it were a true story, I don't know how I would feel about this. Those girls were awful and deserved to just be turned away at the door. Giving people 3 free round of drinks, and then a menu with no prices as well as keep serving them drinks....it's kind of unfair because alcohol messes with your decision making. It's just a little too unethical for me. People like those girls deserve Karma, but that would be going at it wrong (in my opinion)

The story is total crap, no depth or real character in the "Karen's", just the usual tripe that people say about a Karen. I also bring to suspicion about how much detail in the beginning which had nothing to do with the story, the Karen's, or the after affect and a known sign of a liar is too much detail.

Can confirm that we have restaurants with policies like this here (hidden prices, table booking fee, ridiculously expensive drinks). BUT What struck me as fake is (a.) cameras having good sound capturing the customers' every word. That would be a privacy violation here plus in a noisy restaurant with background music etc I call 100% BS on that. (b), Random girl still living with her parents has 0% chance, unless the dad is a millionaire, and gave her the card, of paying $4952 (counting the oysters or whatever) in one shot. That's like the cost of a car. The bank would s**t its pants and phone to check for card fraud at the very least. I have a buddy here who has a restaurant and he sometimes sells specialised alcohol bottles for almost $10000. I saw the cash register buttons. So the price itself is not dubious. The question is what bank would allow a young woman, presumably unemployed and living with her folks, to pay that amount without a fraud alert being triggered? So I reckon BS.

Okay let's play the suspension of disbelief game and assume this DID happen. Someone like this shouldn't be owning a restaurant. Kick people out for sure, tell Karens to dip or whatever, but getting people drunk so you can cash in on them is crappy behaviour and while this person has written this like they are the hero, they're not. They're as much of a jerk as the customers.

OMG! Sorry everyone, but I can't help but believe that this is total Bullshit! There's too many lies to begin at any one place. Now this person may actually have a family owned restaurant. An having a VIP lounge is no big issue, but when you seat a group at your "VIP" section, and they act like this group did. You always make sure they are aware of the pricing. But I think this person was just talking Bullshit from beginning to end. I can't say with 100% certainty; because I quit reading it about 1/4 of the way through. But I smelled BS all the way through. I actually don’t have such a big issue with the spelling. If you grew up in a restaurant and didn’t go to school much, it’s possible to misspell words like this. The red flag for me was keeping 3 tables empty in case some VIP arrives. Unlikely, IMHO.

Learn the difference between "there" and "their". Why were you seating people indoors in a super packed restaurant in the middle of a pandemic. This chick was a moron, but you're a bit of a dipshit also. You didn't lose much money on your table nor the drinks because it's all horribly overpriced. $120 for west coast oysters? I've eaten dozens of types of oysters and I live on the west coast, east coast oysters are better and I've never seen them priced at anywhere near $10 each.

Moreover, it brings us down to these awful people's level. When you respond to someone's bad behavior with insults and name-calling, you lose the moral high ground you once had.

Am I the only one bothered by the term "Karen"? We've taken a name and turned it into a slur, with no regard for those unlucky enough to share the name. Imagine the ridicule these people must face. Moreover, it brings us down to these awful people's level. When you respond to someone's bad behavior with insults and name-calling, you lose the moral high ground you once had. Shouldn't we be better than that?

To all those who think the bill amount is false you’ve never eaten at a high end restaurant. To all those who think spelling is a requirement to own an inheritance, you must be joking. To those who otherwise think the story is made up, Places that host celebrities can easily as these prices of the rich and famous. Well done to owner. Lesson learned.

The authors of this article should have done the OP a favor and cleaned up his misspellings. He's a smart guy, but it does him a disservice to let him look like an uneducated, low-class person. Maybe he didn't spend much time in school because he was working for his parents? Editing his original post would have been doing him a kindness. (It also helps to keep up higher standards of literacy for your audience.)
