Customer Feels Guilty For Getting A Cashier Fired After She Cut Up Their ID, People On The Internet Say She Had It Coming

Customer Feels Guilty For Getting A Cashier Fired After She Cut Up Their ID, People On The Internet Say She Had It Coming

Good customer service is something you barely notice because it’s so smooth and unintrusive. It’s only later that you fully appreciate just how professional it really was. But bad service? That’s the kind of thing you call out and later gossip about with your coworkers.

Reddit user Sensitive_Positive37 shared their run-in with a less-than-friendly cashier at a local grocery store. She didn’t believe that the redditor’s driver’s license was real because it was an American one while they admitted that they were a foreigner. This led to a dramatic moment where the employee destroyed the ID card… and later went on to get fired.

Even though nobody should have their belongings destroyed, Sensitive_Positive37 still felt guilty about the result. Do you think they did the right thing by asking to speak to the cashier’s manager, dear Pandas? How would you have diffused the situation before it got out of hand? Read the full story and give your verdict below.

A cashier ended up getting fired for acting very unprofessionally towards a customer who was from a foreign country

Reddit overwhelmingly said that Sensitive_Positive37 wasn’t wrong to have gotten the cashier fired, even if they simply wanted to file a complaint with their higher-up. It was the employee’s attitude, assumptions, and rash actions that led to her losing her job, not the fact that somebody called her out on her behavior.

Good service partly relies on common sense (i.e. don’t randomly start cutting people’s ID cards in half) and partly on getting proper training. Not every employee has enough experience on the job to know how to deal with rare situations with customers, so getting some guidance prior to this can help them solve the issues instead of making them worse.

This entire situation could have been avoided had the cashier been a bit more open-minded, a tad less suspicious, and maybe even humble enough to talk to her manager first.

Nobody’s denying that some people use fake ID cards. However, to accuse somebody of having a fake document because they weren’t born in the US just shows the inherent prejudice some people have.

The employees who do well in retail—as well as in any other area, to be honest—are the ones that go the extra mile to help their customers. That doesn’t mean treating everyone like a king (we know there are plenty of rude and entitled customers, too), but it does mean always being professional and treating others with the respect that you expect to see from them.

A genuine smile here, a kind word there, and a willingness to solve problems make all the difference. Just remember to leave your scissors in the break room.

Most redditors agreed that the original poster of the story did nothing wrong by speaking to the cashier’s manager

I had something similar happen once in the UK. This was all before the internet was widely available, I doubt it would happen today. I lived in the UK for years, and then moved to Belgium. We still went back for holidays and stuff, and I was at a supermarket buying, amongst other things, a bottle of wine. The cashier asked for my ID, and I gave her my (Belgian) driver’s license. She looked at it weirdly for a minute or two, then laughed and gave it back, going “Nice try.” I was slightly confused at this point, so I asked what she meant. She insisted it was fake, and that she’d never heard of Belgium. I insisted that not only was Belgium a real place, it wasn’t even that far away. She said she’d check with her manager. Manager comes over, looks at my ID, and also laughs. “If you’re going to make a fake ID, love, try not making up a fictional country!” Baffling. I went to another store where, amazingly, they agreed Belgium was a real place and I wasn’t going insane.

Yes, in the US this is a felony, if they think it is fake they can confiscate it until the police arrive, but only under very limited circumstances. This woman committed a felony.

She was clearly in the wrong. I wonder if it was the legal complications of her actions that had the store take it seriously and fire her. NTA. I worked for TSA for five years, so have experience checking IDs. When I would come upon one I’d never seen before, or one that looked fake, the protocol was to alert my supervisor, who would then make a few well-placed phone calls to verify if it was legit. It never took very long. In the meantime, that one questionable person went with the supervisor and I could finish processing the rest of the line so they could catch their flights. Even if the ID was fake, the supervisor never cut it up but passed it on, intact, to the police or INS. I was an officer of the government who held a federal security clearance, and had some level of authority, yet I never even considered taking it upon myself to destroy anyone’s ID. This cashier, with zero authority whatsoever, had no business doing what she did, especially being that it stemmed from her personal racism and xenophobia, and was downright ignorant—-and illegal.

That she was fired was not the "fault" of the customer. Customer had every right to be very angry. It is illegal (here) to damage government issued ID's and it costs money and time to get a new one. And the customer didn't demand she get fired, right? So that is on the manager. The manager could have sanctioned her or make her write an apology and pay for replacement costs. (maybe they did offer, but she declined?). Anyway, customer does not have the autority to fire her, is not responsible for her being fired, and has every right to complain about her.

The cashier definitely deserved to be fired. When I turned 21 I went out to a club with a couple friends the guy at the front checking ID’s was convinced my ID was fake. Even though I look exactly like my picture I had the same hairstyle and makeup in person that night as I did in my picture. But he saw my foreign name and asked if I was Bosnian I said yes he said no you’re not, you don’t look Bosnian (what the hell?) this is a fake and you’re not 21. My friends spoke up for me and I spoke Bosnian just to prove I was. One of the strangest experiences I’ve experienced.

A driver's license is the easiest official document for non-citizens to get. My state doesn't care if you are a citizen or even if you are a illegal immigrant. They just want to be sure that you know enough about driving to be safe on the road. Nevertheless, this woman's behavior was so far out of line... you are NTA. She was a loose cannon who could have become dangerous. The store was right to fire her; still, I wonder what happened to her to unbalance her so severely. You have to feel pity for someone who is that angry.

Um...the cashier didn't just give poor customer service, she committed a crime. It is illegal for a private citizen to destroy an unexpired government ID. If I no longer wanted my drivers license and it wasn't expired, I would need to return it to the issuing agency. The OP could have had the cashier arrested. That would be AH behavior. The cashier should have been fired, and good on the OP for standing up for herself.

NTA! As a former expat in the US, reading this made me cringe!!! As a legal expat you are issued an SSN and any required local ID like a driving licence. Her behavior is not acceptable and she had it coming. Also official IDs always belong to the issuing authorities.

Def NTA! Having worked in some form of customer service most of my life, this is NOT how you handle situations like this. A: she should've grabbed the manager to handle the issue & check the ID. Some places have the infrared scanners & some can scan it with their register gun to check the barcode on the back. If they werent sure or couldnt check it, they could call their local police to check it. B: Regardless of the ID situation, there was no reason to not sell him his non ID needing items. C: As far as i know, we are not supposed to destroy the ID. Just like counterfeit money, we are to confiscate it & defer to the local police. So yeah, if she really thought it was fake, she shouldn't have released it back to him BUT shouldnt have destroyed it.

Destroying someone ID is a felony. Destruction of government documents and destruction of Government property. I would have gotten the person arrested. This is punishable of up to 1 year in prison and or 1K fine. Since its a felony this will stay on your record for years.

This is an instance of a person absolutely being NTA. They didn't insist on her firing, that was the decision of the supermarket. And, cutting up any cards, outside of empty gift cards if prompted by the customer, is not part of her job. If she's supposed to consult a manager on fake bills, then I would think an ID would fall into that category, as well.

Would have called the cops on her tbh. She destroyed property that will cost quite a bit in terms of time and money to replace. Plus, cashier lady was obviously trying to be vindictive and 'teach OP, the foreigner, a lesson not to mess with her'.

I would have called the Police. Licenses are the property of the Department of Motor Vehicles in your state and she had no authority to confiscate or destroy it. She committed a crime and could have done jail time for it, or at least gotten a hefty fine.

Remember in Harry Potter 7, when the Ministry of Magic declared that no muggle-born person could have magical abilities and that therefore, they must have stolen their wands? And their wands were destroyed? This is the very same logic. And yes, it is Nazi-Logic.

If she'd done what she was supposed to ie get the manager, none of this would've happened. Instead she actually cuts up an ID? Madness..

She deserved to be fired. I worked retail for many years including in grocery. Never would I cut up a customers card. Where does this cashier get off. Power Tripping at its worst. I find cashiers are extremely rude these days and have no pride in being good customer service reps for the companies that employ them.many times I have had their rudeness put a damper on an otherwise good day.

If someone did they to me, I'd make sure the asshole got fired. I might even take her to court fit the hassle, health risk, and expense involved with getting a new drivers license, especially when you're not a citizen. Its too bad the victim couldn't just haul off and smash her a good one..

Cutting up their ID is wild! I worked a job selling age restricted products and we would not keep the ID, just refuse it and log the incident. I would fully expect to be in serious trouble for destroying someone’s ID!

I once had the police pull me over and tell me my license was suspended. (I've never been suspended, no accidents, tickets) Later at the station, the officer was about to hand it back to me. The police department receptionist lady refused to believe me, smugly said "Everyone says they're innocent" and then cut it up. Wtf?

The cashiers xenophobia overcame her common sense, leeding her to commit a crime whilst on the job. She overstepped her bounds by destroying an innocent customers I.D. She absolutely deserved the consequences of her actions.

If she is that hostile she is putting herself in danger working customer service. I had a person pull a gun on me over a pack of cigarettes. People are far too irrational for anyone to be cutting up their property. She's lucky he was level headed enough not to retaliate in anger.

WTF. If this happened.... I have never heard that being allowed. They would just hand it back and say they can't serve me. They would get a manager. They would say whatever, they look of age. All sorts of other things, not make it their problem. So many don't even check id.

There is absolutely no authority anyone outside the Department of Motor Vehicles has to cut your ID up. Even if it is fake. They have to return it. Or she could have called the police and the police could call it in and give it back telling her to mind her damn business.

NTA! Of course people use fake ids it happens, but the manager should be the one to make that call. The manager should be the one to confiscate the ID and if it needs to be destroyed the manager should do that. This cashier decided to be the judge and jury here, first offense or 50th she deserved to be fired. Absolutely appalling behavior

I have a problem with these posts... a small problem. It isn't a question of if this happened, it is the whole "am I the asshole" part at the end. You know you did the right thing, you don't feel guilty or bad... you are only asking that question to fish for validation. I know it is trivial, but it seems like such a disingenuous question.
