One of the most exciting things when going away for college is finally getting a taste of that newly found independence; you’re far away from your family, doing the things you want and, perhaps, not worrying about cleaning your room. However, not everybody can afford an entire apartment, and instead, they look for a place to rent with strangers. And when they first meet their new roomies, it’s like a gamble – will they be their BFFs, or will they make their life a living hell?

Mary is a senior and is graduating in a few weeks, whereas the OP is a junior and will graduate next year, though the author’s boyfriend goes to the same college and will be graduating in three weeks as well.
A couple of days ago, Mary texted the OP saying that her dad is flying out for her graduation and because the hotels are too expensive, he needs to stay in the woman’s bedroom. Naturally, the author was taken aback by this rather strange request and refused immediately.

Mary kept insisting and asking the woman to leave – however, instead of arguing, the OP tried to come up with alternative decisions. She said that her dad could use her air mattress and either sleep in her bedroom or in the common room, though the roomie kept declining. The author’s boyfriend also joined the conversation and said that his friend has an extra twin bed that the man could use but, once again, Mary said no and backed it up with the fact that she has to “babysit” him. When the author said that she and her partner are not going anywhere, the roommate told her that she’s being unreasonable because it’s her only graduation.

You rent a graduation hotel room at least 1 year in advance, just like you find your junior year apartment at the beginning of sophomore year. If you wait, you don't have a place to live... other people's bad decisions and failed marriages are not ops fault. I've never heard of a parent sleeping in student housing, it's probably not allowed.

She may not have the university's permission to actually change the locks. However, I doubt there is any rule againt adding a deadbolt lock to the door. Just give the keys to that lock to the university when you leave. Whatever you do NOT leave that room unattended unless you have made the university aware of what is going on. Your roommate is sadly misinformed as to the living arrangements in your building, and she needs to be made aware by the university, because she's not listening to you.
Change the lock. Put a hidden camera you can access over your phone in your room. DO NOT give in on this.

I agree get a temporary lock to put on your door and if anyone breaks in. Call the police and file a report. I have known about my son Graduation for 6 months and made my own accommodations. Tell her to grow up or go back to kindergarten. Contact your housing department and make them aware of the issues.

New lock, and luckily, you won't have her as a roommate much longer. And I would be laughing my butt off in her face too for thinking she gets to choose who occupies your space. Oh, and hide all your major stuff (get a lockbox if needed) and take a picture of your room before you leave for any reason so you can check to see if anything is out of place when you return. Phones have time stamps with photos. See if she can deny anything had been messed with then. Oh, and they have neat motion sensor things that you can put in front of a door so when it opens it will make the sound of a dog barking. And don't clean up the pee puddle after either, they can clean up their own mess.
Totally weird - most roommate/flatmate contracts would say you can't even have more than one overnight guest even in your own room, can't have a visitor sleep in the common lounge, etc. Thinking that you can push someone out of their own room for a stranger is insane. In this scenario, the correct thing to do is for the dad to stay in a cheap motel an inconvenient distance from the college, and drive back and forth.

Maybe the Dad has a medical condition that roomate is concerned about. Since her Mom is sleeping with her, then Dad would have to use the air mattress. If that doesn't work then give her bed to Dad and Mom and her sleep on air mattress. This person's name is also on rental agreement, so the RM can't 'tell' her to vacate her room. Also get the lock on her room changed immediately so RM can't go into her room unannounced.

NTA with information given, BUT 1 part of the story raises issues, the fact she is there with a boyfriend. A even split 50 50 when there are 3 people is shady, and frequently involves side agreements, especially if there are rules preventing overnight visitors which is common related to communal living buildings like this. I am not saying she is in the wrong, but this smell too much like a sanitized story to minimize her own wrong doings.

I totally agree with putting a lock code on your door or changing out the locks, at least during that time frame, and lock it ever time you are not there. This is ridiculous. NTA with information given, BUT 1 part of the story raises issues, the fact she is there with a boyfriend. A even split 50 50 when there are 3 people is shady, and frequently involves side agreements, especially if there are rules preventing overnight visitors which is common related to communal living buildings like this. I am not saying she is in the wrong, but this smell too much like a sanitized story to minimize her own wrong doings.
ESH. First of all, if there are 3 people living in the apartment they should each be paying a third of the rent. I am sure that the university thinks there are only 2 people living there. So someone has been freeloading for quite some time now. Secondly, nobody has the right to throw their roommate out for a weekend. . . Unless they are going to pay for a motel room or find them alternative housing. Thirdly, BOTH parents need to get their own separate places to stay without camping out in their daughter's room. She's the child, not them.

This girl and her parents knew when graduation was, she knew both her parents needed somewhere to stay and neither of the 3 made arrangements. Says a lot about the parents and the fact they were either too cheap or didn’t have enough money to pay for a room.
Its probably not even for her dad, maybe she's got her mom and her new baby coming and maybe a sister and 3 kids that need the babysitting. Even so, how does she plan on babysitting him when she's graduating anyway?. I bet she didn't even look for a hotel. For extra security, I'd consider buying a big trunk and putting away all personal effects,even with a lock on the door. Mary has made it clear that she has no problem overstepping boundaries and making demands on space which is not hers. It sounds as if she, or Dad, doesn't want to pony up the price of a hotel room( after all, she didn't say there were no rooms available, just that they were too expensive). The roommate and her boyfriend have made enough suggestions; if Dad wants to see his daughter graduate, he'll figure it out. She and her boyfriend split the rent for her room and bathroom, and the rent for the common areas is split three ways. So because the boyfriend is there, the roommate is actually paying less than she would've been if OP lived alone
