These Robin Williams nesting dolls are one of the latest pop-culture projects from San Francisco artist Andy Stattmiller. From tallest to smallest, this painted Williams tribute has 8 characters from the film Mrs. Doubtfire, The Birdcage, Fisher King, Death to Smoochy, Jumanji, Good Morning Vietnam, Mork and Mindy, and Aladdin.

The technical term for nesting dolls is “matryoshka,” and is of Russian origin. Vasily Zvyozdochkin made the first set in 1890 based on a design by Sergey Malyutin. Unbeknownst to most, Zvyozdochkin and Malyutin were inspired by a doll from Honshu, the main island of Japan.
