Some extremely wealthy people I have been around have a more acute sense of their own time and mortality, leading to impatience. Like they understand how awesome their lives are and therefore how short they feel. I knew a guy whose vintage yacht broke down before summer so he bought another one strictly for that upcoming Summer. His reasoning was he likely had 20 full health summers left in his life and didn’t want to spend one of them without a boat considering he had the means to. Honestly can’t argue with that logic.
I used to work for a billionaire Russian family as a tutor for their daughter. One day we’re in her room studying and suddenly she yells “daddy’s home!” and runs to the window. She’d heard a helicopter and knew is was about to land on the lawn.
well.. my daddy have a specific keys kombined from the keys form the entrance, apartment and basement, and two keychains one was flask opener and the other was iron logo of 'CSOB' bank... this keys make specific rattling sound I never failed to recognize, and I always know when my daddy's home... Russian guy I sometimes work for, bought a nice house in a pretty nice area of the French Riviera (Mougins). He didn't even visit it before buying, and just judged he liked it on pictures. He paid 11 million euros for it.
But when he arrived, he though the view wasn't perfect because of another house that was on the way (to him...to me honestly it was barely there and didn't even mask the sea). So he sent his lawyer there to make an offer to the owners (4 million euros). But they declined...so he doubled the offer, and they declined again...So he doubled again, and this time they accepted to sell.
He had that house destroyed the very day he got the keys, and had an underground parking lot built instead, for the cars he "won't be using much here".
So basically the guy paid that distant house more than the one he's planning to spend his summers in, just to have it disappear because it kinda annoyed him. And when he told me the story, he was laughing the whole time.
The guy sounds like a jerk really. Could have changed the lives of a lot of people with the money he spent just to prove he could.

I'd like to think that about myself, but money is the hardest of hard drugs. Once you come into a lot of it, the common effect is that it changes you, makes you more self-destructive, more inconsiderate, paranoid, and makes you seek out more money to no foreseeable end, trying to fill a hole that can't be filled. Probably 9 times out of 10 that's what usually happens.

Don't be, just take a minute to REALLY imagine having THAT much money - if you can always have whatever you want everything becomes boring and worthless. You will never know if your friends really like you or only your money. You need to have security in order to keep your family safe. You can no longer connect with "normal" people on the same level, soon your only acquaintances will be equally bored and oversaturated other mega rich people. We always imagine to remain the same person as now just with more money but that is not true. Maybe if you win the lottery or inherit money and somehow manage to keep relatively quiet about it you can enjoy being moderately rich, however, being as rich as the man described above is not a blessing it's a curse...

I used to install directv in wealthy areas of an east coast city in the US. While I try to give customers options on where I install the satellite dish, I have to get a good line of sight for it to work properly, so sometimes the location options were limited. Someone like that needs a personal advisor to point out things like: solve the problem by getting the mounting hardware for the cable company rather than replacing the roof (or, accept a temporary mounting solution with a release of liability to the temp installer while waiting for the backordered hardware...)
When rich people want to buy a Jaguar in the UK they get assigned a special sales person who is incredibly knowledgeable, they meet in a special fancy office, and special arrangements can be made. This was my friend Chris job, he had access to things that a normal Jaguar sales person wouldn't have. Like he could ring up the manager of the factory for special requests level of access.
Well a Saudi Price wanted to buy this new Jaguar that had been released, so they met up and spent a full day specing the Jaguar out. I believe the final price was something like 125k for the vehicle.

And my friend Chris is like O well of course. They quote delivery time, Saudi prince was fine and asked for his options and was presented with ocean travel options to which the Prince said "what about air cargo?" Chris thinking maybe they'd do 1 or 2 by air cargo and the rest by boat, the Prince was like "No I want all 16 vehicles loaded on a plane, and flown to Saudi Arabia"
So thats the story on how 16 of the same Jaguar with different colors ended up being flown to Saudi Arabia all in the total cost was around 2.5 million.

For anyone who's setting up a career working for the super-rich, the person we spoke with said that having an iron clad contract in place is very important. "Be absolutely certain that you are entitled to everything you should be entitled to - don’t accept any vague promises about pay, holiday, notice periods, etc."
Having said that they added that you should also just have fun and enjoy the perks. "I was given a lift from Russia to the UK in a private plane because we both needed to be in London at the same time. You have access to crazy things through working with a super-wealthy family so make the most of it!"
My great uncle was VERY well off.
He did not have a guest house. It was a guest mansion. Separate from his mansion. In case his kids dropped by. This does not include the olympic sized indoor pool. That was a separate building.
He bought a cannon. He used it to shoot the mountain behind his house. He shot brand new special bowling balls out of it. They cost 100 bucks per ball.
I'm not sure of the actual size of the pool. But it was definitely bigger than most community pools. But if you want to see the cannon in action, Nitro Circus came by and shot a car with it in one of their episodes. I didn't expect this comment to explode so I didn't mention the human slingshot. There have been a few viral videos made about it.

There are cameras all over the entrance. But there are times when people showing up dont want to be on camera(Mostly see it happen when a party BUS of strippers shows up). When the bus is coming down the street, 5-10 servants come out of the building, large black squares attached to long polls. They each put the large black squares up to completely block a camera.

Very nice family but I think in hindsight they wanted to show their friends that they had foreign friends like me. Wife had everything catered and the home professionally decorated - it felt like we were in a department store. Multiple Christmas trees, a working train set, staff handing out appetizers on plates etc. It looked like she studied Christmas movies from the USA and copied everything.
Dinner is served on a comically long table with 2 huge oven roasted Turkeys and all of the trimmings - they looked perfect. I was later told that Koreans don't like turkey & were just for decoration - they would be thrown out later. We ate Korean food. The family said I could take a turkey home and that the caterer would drop it off with anything else I wanted.
Americans waste a lot of food for decoration as well. Before kale became popular as health food, the largest buyer of kale in the US was Pizza Hut. They didn't serve it, they just used it to decorate the salad bar.
I used to work for a company that modified aircraft for really rich people. I’m talking 747s, not gulfstreams.
This company had made several aircraft for this one customer, who I was told had purchased a new one solely because his spiritual advisor had told him that one of his current planes was bad luck. He still let his wife use it for her personal travel.
To me, one of the most exquisite features of these planes wasn’t the gold plated everything, or rare wood veneers, it was the silk carpet. That stuff cost over $1,000 per square foot and feels like walking on a bed of angel feathers harvested in the most inhumane way possible. Granted, these guys don’t deck out the whole plane, just their personal areas (the aft third is usually reserved for staff and such and is more like a fancy economy class), but yeah… silk carpet.

Craziest thing I've seen - brand new 90 metre multimillion pound (GBP) yacht was built in Netherlands. Maiden voyage to Antibes in France. Owner came onboard and left after a few hours. Next week we get sent to Genoa Italy, where all the bathrooms onboard were ripped out and upgraded.
That doesn't sound like a big deal but I'm talking about brand new marble sinks, showers, floors and lobbies all crowbarred out chucked in skips. Tonnes of brand new polished marble binned.

My dad's client bought a whole block of houses to build theirs. It is so wide that they installed a moving walkway like the ones at airports.
My dad works in shipping and has a lot of friends who have worked on super yachts. In the 90s one of his mates got a call up to bring the yacht of a particular Australian media tycoon billionaire (not that one) from Sydney to New York, with instructions to be anchored in a particular bay at an exact time with a lunch spread for 50 people ready. So they got there and set up the food. The guy never showed up. Turns out he was having a rich dude party in a building overlooking the harbour and wanted to be able to point down and say “that’s my boat”. He wanted the lunch just in case he decided to take his rich friends down to his yacht, but he didn’t feel like it that day, so all the food got wasted and they sailed back to Aus without seeing him.
Was a boyfriend of a girl from an obscenely rich family. The sister used to have the nanny (who was sleeping with the husband, but that's another story) fly to Paris in their G550 to buy the newest Hermès bag so she could show it off a few days before it went on sale in the US.
I briefly worked with one of the top Saudi Arabian crown princes in the 80’s. He would buy out the top three floors of the best hotels (Four Seasons etc); two floors were for maids/help/security, top floor was for the Royal family… once it was only the prince and his three wives. Crazy s**t.
Once stayed at a hotel in Europe where this happened, entire floors for His Eminence's little horror of a son to play but he terrorised the entire hotel. Nobody was safe, a favorite stunt was dropping bags of water, or worse, over the balcony onto guests entering or leaving the hotel. Didn't matter if they were dignitaries visiting his father or just tourists staying in the budget class rooms.
My wife's aunt and uncle were busy the entire day of their 25th anniversary and returned home at about 21:00. Decided that the kids needed a bit of fun and booked a private jet to Moscow( they live in paris) and spent a week there.

I worked for someone like this. More than any one purchase, I would say the biggest tell that he was rich was his unerring and unwavering belief that no matter what he wanted to do or what he wanted other people to do, he would always get his way. He would never ever EVER accept no as an answer, even for things that were physically impossible. "But I want it!!!" Yes, it sounds like what a toddler would say.
I still work for someone like this. He builds and flies scale model aircraft as a hobby and spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on it. Which is fine, except he nickels and dimes the staff to death and it really affects morale. He's asked me to commit two illegals acts in the past, both of which I refused. Didn't make him happy, but why should I risk my own reputation (and possibly liberty) because he can't follow the rules and won't take no for an answer!

Amazing how all of these people only care about self-indulgence when they have the chance to make the world a better place. And we worship them for it.
Frankly, this is one of the many reasons why I lost faith in humanity. The extreme wastefulness of ultra-rich in contrast to countless millions, royally f****d over by the said ultra-rich and politicians who they bought and paid for. (Bezos comes to mind). The worst are those born into wealth and I consider myself lucky to be out of the red after 5 years and I am happy to be just in the green for the first time in a very long time. Took some crazy budgeting and planning and I still managed to achieve a lot, including replacing my old piece of a s**t car with an AUDI.
Despite having more money makes people have more option in life, I hope there were more rich who spent MORE their money to make the world a better place
My godparents are extremely wealthy. One day, my godfather decided to have an artificial lake made into his giant garden, just because he felt like it. Later on, he inhabited it with endangered species, which is at least one good thing about it. They also have a house which is as big as a shopping mall, a hangar full of overpriced cars (like 25, from which only one, a yellow Ferrari, is regularly driven) and their dogs have a private chef. Some people just have too much money.
The only truly rich people I knew I haven't talked to in 30 years. Every- Effing- Time they were around, they constantly tried to get other people to do things for them: Get me a drink, get me a cigarette, that's pretty, can I have that?, Lets take your car, it's dirty already and on and on and on.
If I had 'too much money' I know exactly what I would do with it: travel and have my dream vacations and then spend the rest to make a huge dent in student loans for those in the U.S. Just wipe everyone (as much as possible) in one fell swoop. I can never have too much money then I don't know what to do with it. Utterly impossible with how much student debt is out there.
Meh. Nothing surprises me about wealth. I want to see low income people who are living their comfy lives.
If you ever want to know the cause of poverty, misery of low wages and pollution from emissions, among so many societal ills look no further than the super, obscene, utterly detached from ordinary people, level of rich. Their self-interest does not allow them to consider they can alleviate suffering in the world and still have money left over to live well.

No one ever did this on their own. You have to have people work for you in case you want to earn more than usual work is to make. We change the world anyway, we shape our surroundings in every scale and proportion anyway, why not do so in a way that leaves the world a little better? If you're a rich employer, why not hand out a generous amount to your employees?
With, like, 10 million dispoaable ... you can give 100 people 100000 each. Wouldn't make them incredibly rich, but would contribute a great deal of financial safety to people who do honest and often proudly executed work, as a welder, as a gardener, as whatever ... 20 years in company? You get 20K. Retiring, you get about half a house's worth. Just making the working class not obscenely rich, but financially stable, and therefore, more willing to make greater investments that serve not only them, but also their children - having a house you can live in without paying rent is such a thing, and enabling people to do what previous generations were able to would help maintain widespread wealth as well as help taking the steps a transition to an environmentally sustainable society. My sons grandparents (his paternal grandparents) are very well off, I will add that they worked very hard for all they have. More money then they could spend. Two of the most miserable souls I have ever met. In the 12 years I have known them, I have never seen the grandmother smile, and the grandfather only once that I can remember.
Father worked for a man whose name matches the drink Coke. Lady of the house sent him into Boston department store and said buy one of every item from a certain cosmetics company. They called security and tried to throw him out. She also paid for three therapy sessions a day, since he came to the house, two sessions were travel time. But if the staff bought something without a coupon, they got in trouble.
My sister is a lawyer in London who worked for the firm that manages the in-house disputes of the Sultan of Brunei family members. Its staggering. Basically items under the million pound mark weren't recorded as they were considered trivia , at which point the law firms have to step in and tidy up where the items or money went

If that money was made or inherited legally, it's their business. And while this is super wealth, I've worked in South Baltimore, and some folks thought that I was wealthy because I lived in a house in the suburbs. Had a guy ask me to buy lottery tickets for him because I lived in the "rich" area.

I do not begrudge anyone their wealth, unless they don't do anything good with it. These are prime examples of what are not considered good things to do with their money. It is inexcusable to waste money while there are children, animals, and people dying and the situation could be remedied. If you want to waste money on this crap, fine, but throw an equal amount at world problems. I don't think for one minute that people with this kind of money have worked and earned it. Most are like Jeff Bezos and make it off the backs of their workers.
The fact that I have a roof over my head and can go to sleep without feeling hungry makes me a privileged person. The fact that I (if Ireally wanted to) could by myself a brand new Ferrari, makes me belong to a quite small percentage of the world population. I would have to sell my house and most of my belongings, but I actually can. Most of the world population can't, -ever! Still I'm kind of of average wealth where I live. I like to think about that sometimes when I'm upset there is something I consider myself unable to afford. Makes me humble.

While I think it's totally ok to buy expensive things when You're rich, I find it disgusting when they waste resources or when something they want means that something is destroyed for them to get it. For example some really rare tree is cut down or some animal killed or smth. Most very rich people have little to no moral limits.
It's crazy what some people do with money. My dad was installing windows and doors in a house at the same time builders were building an external wall to the front garden. Turns out everything was being ripped out and torn down in less than 6 months time because the house was being remodelled anyway. This was an ex football managers gaff who wanted to make sure the house always looked new.
There’s a weird disconnect between the super-rich and the rest of society and it seems to give birth to bizarre levels of hatred. I’ve worked with several individuals who would be put into that category and most were self-made men and women, they’d worked hard, worked smart and got a lucky break or were in the right place at the right time. If I see a particularly nice car, or helicopter or even a yacht then I normally think ‘well good luck to ‘em’, why hate on them? They do put money into the economy, they do support others. Where’s the mileage in wasting hate on them? Money brings choice and that’s what we crave, the money is almost irrelevant, it’s about choosing whatever you want, whenever you want. More than any one purchase, I would say the biggest tell that he was rich was his unerring and unwavering belief that no matter what he wanted to do or what he wanted other people to do, he would always get his way. He would never ever EVER accept no as an answer, even for things that were physically impossible. "But I want it!!!" Yes, it sounds like what a toddler would say.
I still work for someone like this. He builds and flies scale model aircraft as a hobby and spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on it. Which is fine, except he nickels and dimes the staff to death and it really affects morale. He's asked me to commit two illegals acts in the past, both of which I refused. Didn't make him happy, but why should I risk my own reputation (and possibly liberty) because he can't follow the rules and won't take no for an answer!

Frankly, this is one of the many reasons why I lost faith in humanity. The extreme wastefulness of ultra-rich in contrast to countless millions, royally f****d over by the said ultra-rich and politicians who they bought and paid for. (Bezos comes to mind). The worst are those born into wealth and I consider myself lucky to be out of the red after 5 years and I am happy to be just in the green for the first time in a very long time. Took some crazy budgeting and planning and I still managed to achieve a lot, including replacing my old piece of a s**t car with an AUDI.
Despite having more money makes people have more option in life, I hope there were more rich who spent MORE their money to make the world a better place
My godparents are extremely wealthy. One day, my godfather decided to have an artificial lake made into his giant garden, just because he felt like it. Later on, he inhabited it with endangered species, which is at least one good thing about it. They also have a house which is as big as a shopping mall, a hangar full of overpriced cars (like 25, from which only one, a yellow Ferrari, is regularly driven) and their dogs have a private chef. Some people just have too much money.
The only truly rich people I knew I haven't talked to in 30 years. Every- Effing- Time they were around, they constantly tried to get other people to do things for them: Get me a drink, get me a cigarette, that's pretty, can I have that?, Lets take your car, it's dirty already and on and on and on.
If I had 'too much money' I know exactly what I would do with it: travel and have my dream vacations and then spend the rest to make a huge dent in student loans for those in the U.S. Just wipe everyone (as much as possible) in one fell swoop. I can never have too much money then I don't know what to do with it. Utterly impossible with how much student debt is out there.
Meh. Nothing surprises me about wealth. I want to see low income people who are living their comfy lives.

You get 20K. Retiring, you get about half a house's worth. Just making the working class not obscenely rich, but financially stable, and therefore, more willing to make greater investments that serve not only them, but also their children - having a house you can live in without paying rent is such a thing, and enabling people to do what previous generations were able to would help maintain widespread wealth as well as help taking the steps a transition to an environmentally sustainable society. Two of the most miserable souls I have ever met. In the 12 years I have known them, I have never seen the grandmother smile, and the grandfather only once that I can remember.
