As a guy who worked as a waiter, I can tell you that every customer is special and no two are alike. And you can’t satisfy all of them. Especially, the crazy ones. And believe me, there are a lot of crazies. Recently, a restaurant manager shared a confession on Imgur, listing some of the worst things that have ever happened to him at work, and they will either make you relive the days spent serving people food or reconsider that part-time summer job offer at the pizzeria. Either way, his stories perfectly sum up the struggles of working in the industry, and while there are a lot of benefits, it’s clear that this career path isn’t for everyone. Please don't mess with food though... Read somewhere some people working at a restaurant just ignored any special orders (remove x ingredient because of allergy etc) and left the ingredients in... That can kill someone if they're really allergic. I get that it's super frustrating and a lot of work when people fake allergies because they just don't like some things. also pretty annoying for people who actually are allergic. (I'm allergic to some things too, I just choose food that doesn't have any of those ingredients)

I totally expect to wait for my food to be prepared and cooked to order. I am deeply suspicious of any establishment which delivers a hot meal to your table within a couple of minutes of ordering

God what the hell is wrong with people, I can't even fathom the whole thing with saying you're allergic when all it is is that you don't like the thing. Just order your food without X, it's that simple. No one cares if you don't like it, I promise. I don't like raw onion, so when I order a bean burrito from Taco Bell, I order it without onion. It's so easy.
I am not allergic to onions, but I will occasionally vomit if I eat one (true story, just ask my friends). I used to just ask for no onions, but ended up getting them in spite of my polite request. Since I wasn't expecting them, I ended up with a mouthful on the first bite and was lucky not to reject them all over the table, at which point I had to send the plate back and wait for a redo while my guests finished their meals. So now I tell them I have an allergy. Your move, chef.

There are always the customers who feel superior to "food workers" and therefore don't believe that they deserve respect. The most demanding and rude customers are generally the worst tippers as well.

I will never work at a restaurant again. I did for years and hated every bit of it. Every day is drama..whether its a crazy customer or kitchen guys hitting on you when all you want is your tables order...etc...I hated it. I have so much respect for my waiter/waitress when my husband and I go out to eat. If they are rushed and keep apologizing, we just tell them to take care of others first and get to us when they can...hubby and I don't mind hanging out. Then we make sure to leave a crazy tip. It really is a crappy job!
Some people are plain A-holes...If you go to a restaurant to have a nice evening without having to cook, then be nice to the service. It's their job, they do not cook and serve on a whim because they have nothing else to do, but because they love their job and have to pay their bills like everyone else. It's not that hard, be nice to others.

Load More Replies... I actually walked out of a restaurant one time with my friends, because the service was horrible, the food took forever to be served, and the food was awful. There were 2 managers there,who kept telling us that the main cook was off sick, and the guy cooking was a new hire. And only 1 waitress was on duty. Please be patient. I agreed with my friend, that those managers should have been in that kitchen helping out, and helping to serve. Instead of standing around scratching their asses. I think that is the only time I have ever walked out like that.
The problem with "don't say you're allergic" is that, if you just say, "I don't like this ingredient", 9 times out of 10 you're going to get some of that ingredient in your food anyway, just not as much as you would have normally. When I say "no onions", it doesn't mean "Well, a little bit of onions is ok, just leave out most of them" it means "No f-ing onions".
Can't just just remove the f-ing onions that might remain yourself? The difference between allergies and dislike is massive - allergies can kill. You might not like a small bit of onion hidden amongst the lettuce or whatever but you will survive the experience. Also, you can vote with your feet/leave reviews. If you don't get the service you want then you don't go back. If staff won't deal with your honest requests then they don't deserve your custom.

I do see his point... however, at least here in Germany where customer is not exactly king, they will often give you sh*t if you don't like an ingredient . Claiming an allergy scares them and makes sure they will help you. Restaurants are expensive, and if it's possible did really like to omit e.g. cheese without the waiter giving me an attitude because he personally has a problem with vegans.
OTOH, if you go to a good restaurant and try to change ingredients on everything, in Europe they WILL tell you off and so they should. Menus are posted by the door of just about every restaurant all over the place. I was told by a friend of mine she was in a restaurant once when a woman decided that the most perfect place to change her baby's c**p filled diaper was right in the middle of the restaurant floor surrounded by people eating or trying to eat their food. She had already been to the rest room and knew that the restaurant had excellent changing facilities for babies and shouted that over to her. The woman ignored her and kept going. You wouldn't believe the obscenities she screamed at the manager when he asked her to move to the rest room. I cannot believe there are people out there that are so ignorant.
I have eaten in a lot of restaurants in the past few months because of travel. The majority of my experiences with staff have been overwhelmingly positive. Some customers will never be pleased, but it cuts both ways. Some restaurant workers are not interested in doing their job. They ignore you when you want their attention for a drink refill or ask for the check, they give the wrong information about ingredients in the food, they can be cold or even rude for no reason, but when they present the check they are suddenly all smiles & warmth.
There is a restaurant I frequent that has their "problem child." An elderly woman that comes in with her husband..she specifically asks NOT to be seated in this particular waitresses section. Well the last time I saw her at breakfast, she was upset because the restaurant was nearly to capacity and the only place TO sit was in her "favorite" waitresses section. Now the food comes out very quickly at this place, so they hadn't been there long before the wife is bitching and complaining to the husband to do something about the waitress she hates. He said "she's done nothing wrong." Wife "you never support me in anything! I'm going to the car!" She gets up and stomps out while her husband sits there and slowly eats breakfast. I turned to my husband and said.."Probably the most peaceful meal he's had since he married her."

OTOH - and this has happened a couple of times - if my salad appetizer takes 45 minutes to get to the table, I'm outta there. There is NO excuse for that nonsense, and I don't care you deeply in the weeds the kitchen is. /// There are a couple of restaurants that used to do this so that they could sell you another bottle of wine before the main course came out. My step parents should seriously be a part of this post. Every single restaurant they go to, they have to complain about at least one thing. Cold food, service is too slow/bad, etc. It's so annoying and embarrasses me. I just wish they would enjoy the experience as it comes and learn from their experiences instead of try to make everything perfect right then and there.
And don't think that it's any different for other service industries. I worked at a dog groomers. People would come in asking for a "puppy cut." There is no such thing as a puppy cut. Then we tell them a full groom takes 4 hours (wash, dry, cut, nail trim)...so they come back in 2 hours and are surprised when the dog is not done. Or the ones that sit in the lobby and stare at the groomer the whole time wondering why their dog is doing backflips on the table...It's because you're sitting here so the dog thinks it's going home. Go away and let us groom. Or the ones that drop off the dog, no appointment and expect that we will dive right in and start on their dog. Well, no..we had people that were courteous enough to make an appointment. We do their dogs first then your dog gets groomed. You can't just jump the line because you were too lazy to pick up the phone and make an appointment. (I especially hate it when they do this the day before a big holiday.)

The expectations are high in every area of customer service. Common sense is a rare commodity these days.
What about the people who bring in their own food and expect you to cook it? Can we just ban those people completely?

I don't get the point about the gluten and diet... What does it have to do with waiting tables or manage the restaurant? If you are the nutrition specialist and I ask you for advice, please, go ahead... But as restaurant manager...?
for so many people in the U.S. at least this has become such a gigactly huge fad & diet that it seems there are hardly any of a large portion of our population do not claim to be actually allergic to gluten yet they aren't, as it's rather uncommon but does rarely occur & is painful. perhaps it's just a way the masses convince themselves to stick to this monster fad diet. when no diet actually ever really continually helps to make physical changes. so serving & managing at a restaurant it just becomes tiresome & ridiculous, instead of pleasant & enjoyable.

I have a very serius food allergy (eggs) and I never complain when my eating options are limited. I know eggs are a very usual ingredient, even in cheese!!!! I always warn the waiter about my problem, but sometimes I think they don´t believe me 100% (this don´t-wanna-eat-this-i-am-gonna-say-i´m-allergic fashion is evil >:/) and I have had some serious health problems afterwards... auch.
Most people with Celiac's disease don't eat out because they can't trust the staff and wind up sick.
Same goes for the retail sector, far too many rude people out there with a false sense of entitlement!
I'm sure that a lot of this is accurate, but give me a break about the excuses. Someone didn't want to wait 5 minutes, so what? I doubt that happens a lot, so why use that as an excuse? There are plenty of other career options if the annoying masses are so intolerable...
If a couple comes in with bad mood, have arguments afterwards , complaints over food will likely happen.
When I worked in food service, it was very hard work, for little pay. I basically worked for tips, because it was sub-minimum wage, and you still had to pay Uncle Sam on assumed tips. So taxes ate up most of my paycheck. When I go out to eat, I make sure I am polite and respectful, and leave a good tip.
And this is why I went back to school, so I wouldn't have to be a waitress anymore. Also, this is why I tip my waitresses so well!

As an ex picky eater i understand why people fake allergies, for all my childhood my mother tried to feed me food that disgusted me by disguising it as other things, for most of my life i had zero trust in other people handling my food even if i never resorted to fake an allergy. Then at some point i realized that i loved food and my mother was simply a mediocre cook but that is another story.
Well, with a bit of knowledge it's possible to understand why faking an allergy isn't sensible. If people knew the lengths the kitchens had to go to, as allergies can KILL, then they hopefully would stop faking. I have no allergies but some foods have an unfortunate affect. Still not going to lie and call it an allergy.

Most people with Celiac's disease don't eat out because they can't trust the staff and wind up sick.
Same goes for the retail sector, far too many rude people out there with a false sense of entitlement!
I'm sure that a lot of this is accurate, but give me a break about the excuses. Someone didn't want to wait 5 minutes, so what? I doubt that happens a lot, so why use that as an excuse? There are plenty of other career options if the annoying masses are so intolerable...
If a couple comes in with bad mood, have arguments afterwards , complaints over food will likely happen.
When I worked in food service, it was very hard work, for little pay. I basically worked for tips, because it was sub-minimum wage, and you still had to pay Uncle Sam on assumed tips. So taxes ate up most of my paycheck. When I go out to eat, I make sure I am polite and respectful, and leave a good tip.
And this is why I went back to school, so I wouldn't have to be a waitress anymore. Also, this is why I tip my waitresses so well!
Wow not sure why I would get down voted for saying I quit serving because people treat you so bad and I tip will for the same reason. Smh

As an ex picky eater i understand why people fake allergies, for all my childhood my mother tried to feed me food that disgusted me by disguising it as other things, for most of my life i had zero trust in other people handling my food even if i never resorted to fake an allergy. Then at some point i realized that i loved food and my mother was simply a mediocre cook but that is another story.
Well, with a bit of knowledge it's possible to understand why faking an allergy isn't sensible. If people knew the lengths the kitchens had to go to, as allergies can KILL, then they hopefully would stop faking. I have no allergies but some foods have an unfortunate affect. Still not going to lie and call it an allergy.

Load More Replies... He's not being a douche - the customers are and he has a right to be angry. Dealing with inconsiderate and unreasonable people day in day out must be flipping annoying at times. Yes, it's a customer facing job but I doubt anyone goes into it expecting that level of stupid and rude.
