Customer Gets So Upset Over Waiter Wearing A ‘Don’t Be Racist’ T-Shirt That He Leaves A Negative Review, And Now Everyone Is Trolling Him

What do people leave bad restaurant reviews for? Many reasons may be to blame, some legit, some not so much. But one guy who “really enjoyed the food and service” got upset about something entirely different. It turns out, his waiter’s shirt, which read “hi. don’t be racist. thanks.” was enough to write a negative review for “employee’s ideology plastered on the shirt.”

As one would expect, people on the internet weren’t buying it. After the Chowder House employee named Bryan shared the incident on Twitter, the story blew up with 18.1K retweets and 101.9K likes. Folks “couldn’t even” over the absurd complaint and everyone seemed to show their support to Bryan.

But nobody foresaw what happened next. The restaurant owner added a bunch of items to the basket, and you can guess which one it was.

And this is the shirt that got the restaurant the negative review

In the wake of Black Lives Matter, more and more people are stepping in to voice out against racial injustice. And for those who can’t take to the streets, getting a humble graphic shirt is a way of showing your commitment without uttering a single word. The “de facto mobile billboards of our era,” the shirts are a great way to donate to charity and anti-racist organizations. Take a look at the selections picked up by Esquire and High Snobiety.

Bored Panda also spoke to the team behind “Shop Mia Wallace”, an online boutique that specializes in slogan t-shirts, about their view on this whole situation. “We would like to point out that we support Bryant to the fullest on what he has been through,” they said.

“As a small but emerging establishment, our official stand regarding this message is well reflected on our merchandise. We believe that the world will be a better place if we acknowledge and respect each other as human beings and spread the message of love into our lives,” the boutique commented.

These days, “being vocal about our views and exercising freedom of speech is more important than ever” because of the growing tendencies of discrimination in our world.

The restaurant owners responded by adding a bunch of these shirts to their baskets

Another excellent way to support Black Lives Matter and help people of color is to make use of this list of books, movies, documentaries, and podcasts we wrote about earlier. Betsy Faulkner, the woman behind the idea, told Bored Panda that she never expected her poster list to go viral. “While I was aware it would be a useful resource, I assumed it would stay among my friends and followers, but instead, it has reached a much wider audience. Even actress Susan Sarandon!“ Read about her project and tune in for the rest of the interview right here.

So wearing shirts with obvious messages are offending? I bet that guy is also offended when he reads a sign "Don't drink and drive." "Well, hell, good luck with your social justice warrior campaign. I'm not driving here anymore."

Drinking and driving is a behavioral problem. Racism is a mental health, brainwashing, indoctrination issue. You aren't going to solve the latter by a tee-shirt.

I'm sure I'll get called a racist, which isn't the case in the slightest. Have you considered race doesn't always need to be highlighted everywhere? Again, before you start throwing "you are a racist" at me, there are a lot of people who agent racist, have never been racist, are pretty decent people and actually don't want to be part of a 'movement'. Those people tackle racism and other situations of prejudice in their their daily lives. They stand up for things and treat people with respect. They don't need to be part of a popular trend or to discuss it constantly. Don't let the hype make you an angry person. Be a good person instead. I think this is a tricky issue. Most (or a lot of) people here in Bored Panda are against racism, so they think the t-shirt is great and the customer is an idiot. But... what if the t-shirt displayed, for example, an alt-right slogan? Or something within legality, but offensive to a minirity/women/gay people/etc? Would all you be so supportive? I don't think a place that deals with customers is the right place to wear "your favourite t-shirt", whatever message it displays. I wouldn't tolerate any abuse or disrespect to customers or employers, but, every person has an ideology, and I don't think your workplace is the best place to boast about it. Demand respect and show respect to everybody, but don't preach.

Guy leaves a comment about a t-shirt being unprofessional in his opinion and people extrapolate that he is racist, angry, offended, afraid etc. They start bullying personally on social media and this seems to be a great victory against racism. I doubt that this place is a 2 Michelin star restaurant but I know plenty of restaurants that even wearing a t-shirt can be considered unprofessional, but nobody seems to see from that angle. The guy has been judged and condemned to be bullied eternally for a comment he made about dress code. Game set match

It was the "social justice warrior" comment that the customer chose to leave at the end of his complaint that tells the world this isn't about "professional attire" but his own ideology. Betting he wouldn't have had a problem if the server was wearing a MAGA hat.

I'm half Asian and I can see why some may find it offensive. Because SOME (not all) of the people that say stuff are the same people that call anything they disagree with racist, even if it isn't racist. because the left and right wing media seeks to divide us. Of course, most of us agree that being racist is bad and you shouldn't do it.

so the problem with the shirt, is it points out something that the vast majority of the country overwhelmingly believes and agrees with. it doesn't need said. what its really doing is calling everyone else a racists besides far left acivists, specifically conservatives, considering according to the internet and the media the vast majority are overt racists. How would of the restaurant reacted if that guy complained bc he had on a MAGA shirt? bet it wouldnt of been the same.

While racism is rampant, I kind of agree with the patron. I don't think ANY slogan or ideology should be on a servers shirt. While at work you should strive to be as professional as possible. I'll bet people would have a different opinion if it was something "pro-Muslim or Anti-American". You can't call it free speech (Hey! Jackass Trump, you paying attention?) if that speech is only allowed for the few you deem "worthy".

Celtic Pirate Queen First of all, since the owners of the restaurant approved, you are off base. Secondly, relating "professionalism" to how servers dress is ridiculous, since there have always been plenty of places that have the female servers wear tight, low cut shirts. It was acceptable and professional, was it, for women to be essentially sex objects at a place like the now defunct "Hooters"? Yet a guy can't put on a t-shirt that asks people to behave with decency? Give me a break. That t-shirt isn't a slogan or an ideology. It's a request -- to treat other people, no matter what they look like, with respect. It's phrased as a question, not a demand. Anyone can abide by it or not. If it makes people defensive, that's because they don't like their comfort zone challenged. Not because something is being rammed down their throats.

That someone would be offended by the shirt is awful. That the guy wearing the shirt thought it would cause people to not be racist is laughably ridiculous. Way to show how awesome of a white person you are! You are SO not racist that I am now in love you, you not-racist, totally awesome white dude who recognizes his privilege! That is what he was thinking - that everyone would recognize his recognition that he is not racist. A shirt like that changes no opinions. It's narcissim.

I don’t find the shirt offensive, but I do find it patronising. I have absolutely no intention of being racist, so I’m not convinced I need to be reminded. It’s equivalent to wearing a shirt that’s says don’t be rude/sexist/homophobic, etc. - they’re just basic morals/ethics. That being said, fair play to the guy for fighting for a cause he believes and for the restaurant to backing him up.

Granted, the shirt displayed is only offensive to racists. That stated, and Devil's advocate here, companies probably shouldn't get into the habit of letting employees dictate the dress code. I'm sure my employer wouldn't be keen with me wearing my Pantera gear to the office.

Why assume there is a dress code? Or maybe there is but it's quite relaxed. I've mainly worked in offices, admittedly, but there was only one that had a dress code. The others didn't care as long as we were decent (in their eyes not showing unreasonable amounts of skin).

It isn't a political view - it's a human issue. Wearing a t-shirt hardly pushes anything down anyone's throat as it is easily ignored - unless the message really grates and then, well, the person having a problem with that message is a person who is the problem.

How can 'don't be racist' be an ideology?. Would 'be a decent human being' be an ideology?

If I had a server with that shirt I would compliment them on it. What kind of self-involved jack-a*s gets offended at a polite t-shirt asking people to not be racist?

If you do not like the policies of a particular restaurant one ought to vote with ones dollar and choose a different restaurant, not freak out.

It's a shirt. Once, the state where I lived wanted to censor tshirts, but those with nudity, pornography, or profanity, which I can see with kids around. But really this one is pretty harmless..

Only in dumbfuckistan(murica) you can have an opinion and get attacked because of it....Oh and yeah, it's not professional to wear such shirt at work.

Okay, you know what? America does suck a*s right now. But if the boss is allowing it and literally got more for everyone at the job to wear, I'm thinking it's alright.

So, what you're saying is: you want people to stop acknowledging racism so you don't have to comes to terms with your actions.

You have to be pretty self-involved to believe the shirt was worn specifically for you, bro.

Perpetual whiny victim, the waiter seems to be. Seriously, get over yourself. I have endured racism from blacks way more than I have ever witnessed a white person being racist. Grow up, little boy - the world is what you make it, and apparently you’re just a bit wimpy.

Can't believe all the negative comments to this guy's review. He was absolutely correct. You don't go to a restaurant to get their political views pushed down your throat, no matter how well intentioned they may be.

It isn't a political view - it's a human issue. Wearing a t-shirt hardly pushes anything down anyone's throat as it is easily ignored - unless the message really grates and then, well, the person having a problem with that message is a person who is the problem.

I can't decide who is more idiotic, the idiot who wrote the review, the idiots at the restaurant for responding to him, the online outrage mobs in their little cyber echo chambers, or me for writing this idiotic comment in what is obviously a "morality" article intended to dog whistle the second and third category to attack the first to expurgate their wrongthink . (or idiotthink?) . In the time writing this I could have done something productive. and in the time reading this, YOU could have done something productive.

Regardless of how positive the message, the reality is no this is not a professional shirt.hate if you want back next week it will be some other popular movement pretend to support and get on the bandwagon instead actually understanding and respecting it. Hence, why unfortunately not much will change until those empty supporters care about the cause. Reality is a b***h.
