Couple Saves A Squirrel And Now It Lives In Their Christmas Tree

About a month ago, Redditor carefree_dude’s wife found an injured baby squirrel on the side of the road twitching, most likely hit by a car. The poor wild animal had major head trauma and couldn’t do anything, so the family reached out to a wildlife rehabilitator.

After six days of medicine, Mitten, the cute squirrel, felt a lot better, he was able to hold food, though he still needed help drinking and couldn’t walk very well. His recovery was nothing short of a Christmas miracle. “We are still caring for him, though he will likely never be able to be rereleased, wrote the Redditor. “He may not be able to live a wild life, but if he continues to recover, we can help him live a good life as a pet squirrel.”

Mitten is the second adorable squirrel the family has saved: “We would love to run a wildlife rehabilitation center someday. We are building a 5ft by 3ft by 8ft enclosure for him, which I hope to put a small living tree in.” For now, the cute animal loves hanging out in the family’s Christmas tree.

“He couldn’t eat, drink, [or] walk. We were eventually able to get him to drink via a syringe”

“He often keeps his head to the side”

The family may never be able to release him back into the wild, so now he’s living in their Christmas tree!

Perhaps they should take him to the vet, but they are super kind people. We need more people to be like them. I hope it has a happy ending.

My husband is the wildlife rehabber that they reached out to. We now have mittens and he will be going back out into the wild this spring. He has fully recovered. They did a wonderful job with him. He will be released in a protected area and will be provided food until he can start doing it on his own again. To give you an education on squirrels...they do not carry rabies and the fleas they have are totally different then what's on a cat or dog. We rehab between 400 to 600 squirrels a year. This does not include the possum, bunnies, chipmunks and other misc wildlife we do. Possums also do not carry rabies, but everyone thinks they do. They are actually very sweet little ones, but they will bite if provoked. You can go to our website and see when we do and learn about these babies. It is www.squirrelrefuge.org .... thanks

In my town, we like to destroy wildlife habitat and replace it with apartments, strip malls, nail parlors, and fast food places. We used to have coyotes, fox, etc. Now, we have asphalt and concrete, not to mention horrible traffic and moron consumers. It's called progress.

Ayup, and far too many people just don't see the connections. Thanks for posting your sentiment (facts).

Did they take him to the vet or gave him medicine themselves?

While saving a hurt creature is commendable, it's considered cruel by many to lock up a non-domesticated animal. Also wild animals frequently carry diseases and parasites - a school friend of mine "rescued" a dove and got TBC as a result. I hope the OP took the squirrel to a vet to discuss its injuries and this adoption.

"so the family reached out to a wildlife rehabilitator." I think they're good. I know that concern though. My fiance brought a dog home and we were lucky to just get flees.
