Man Finds Baby Squirrel On His Bed, And It Grows Up To Be The Most Adorable Pet
One day a man came back home, only to find that a mother squirrel had made a nest of twigs, dried pines and branches on his bed for her two newborn baby squirrels.
Wildlife rehabilitators Christina and Michael were called out to the unusual incident and tried to reunite the baby animals with their mother. However, busy with fetching materials for the nest, mother squirrel had no intention of taking the babies with her. Eventually, she stopped coming back at all.
Unfortunately, one of the baby squirrels didn’t make it, and after an assessment by a local wildlife vet, it was determined that the remaining baby would not survive on her own either. Which is why Christina and Michael decided to step in and adopt the cute squirrel baby and called her Thumbelina.
Simply put, Thumbelina was special from the very beginning. Because of an unusual birthing season and the loss of her little sister, Thumb had to grow up by herself without interaction with other brown squirrels.
Everything with Thumb was slow. While most babies could not care less about milk, having already tasted real food, Thumb was a big baby with a bottle. Unlike other wild animal babies, Thumbelina wasn’t interested in jumping and climbing. She would walk instead of running, and sit instead of climbing.
Even despite the best efforts to introduce Thumbelina to other squirrels, she would never want anything to do with them. One of her foster parents says: “I don’t know what she thinks she is, but it’s definitely not a squirrel.”
Now Thumbelina is a happy, chubby and very cute animal who spends her time peacefully with her Mom and Dad, but not without occasionally getting in some sort of trouble! She loves sugar snap peas, arugula, and avocado. And she absolutely hates outdoors, cold weather, other squirrels and the vacuum cleaner.

Guess I have to keep my door open now, maybe some squirrel will start living with me.
Be careful. Me and my mom raised three squirrels and even though I fed them and played with them nearly as often as my mom, two of the squirrels were aggressive towards everyone but my mom, including me. And the last two squirrels were raised from before their eyes were born, whereas we got our first squirrel when he was nearly grown. Strangely, he was the sweetest of all the squirrels we raised.
She found the key under the doormat... and let herself in :-D
Load More Replies...From the earlier photos, it looks like the rehabbers did not make enough of an effort not to imprint on the squirrel. I recently raised a very young abandoned squirrel. As soon as possible it was outside under a big tree in a large cage with a nest box. Contact was minimized and it was given its natural foods. It was not provided milk after it had outgrown the need. Eventually the cage was left open so it could come and go and it became more wild. At first it would jump on people, behavior stifled with a squirt from a water bottle to prevent people thinking they were being attacked and killing the squirrel. The main thing is that it is living a normal squirrel life. I see it upon occasion. Pet squirrels of this species can inflict painful, deep bites. They are still wild animals. The rehabbers should perhaps take a refresher course in how to raise a wild animal to stay wild. We need to think of the animal's best interests, rather than our own.
hmmmm...doesn't want to interact with other squirrels. She's smart enough not to leave the castle to go live with the peasants.
Well, the only squirrel she knew abandoned her, no wonder she doesn't like squirrels.
This is the sweetest story. I'm so glad she's happy and loved. I love the adorable pictures. ❤️
So sweet! I befriended a wild squirrel when I was a teen; it finally learned to not fear me, and it would grab food from my hand and eat it. Once it bit me by mistake. I was ok. Squirrel was ok. Months later, the squirrel was gone. Never found out why. Never was able to befriend another squirrel.
Awww she sounds a lot like my dysfunctional parrot Frankie - he hates other parrots too and thinks he's people.
I love this story. I love it because the humans first thought was that they needed to protect and care for these precious, tiny creatures. When other humans would have just gotten rid of them and never think about it again....these 2 lovely people put in the effort, kindness and love needed to help this tiny little furry baby...giving him a chance at life. He may not think he's a squirrel...but instead just a tiny, furry human. I have no doubt he loves being your itty bitty fur baby 💜
she is the most adorable thing I have seen today, enough to warm my heart. That tiny face always sleeping. Thank u for saving her <3
There are some truly beautiful people in the world! The love and joy this animal brings is inspiring. Just a lovely trio.
The circumstances of this squirrel and her Mom and Dad are very rare.Squirrels are not pets. They are wild creatures. They can wreak havoc in your house/apartment. Think very carefully before you decide to adopt a squirrel based on this story.
Well, her Squirrel mom gave her up...So naturally Thumbie doesnt want to deal with her kind. This is so cute! <3
That squirrel is supposed to look like that, all eastern grey squirrels are pear-shaped. Besides, she's definitely not going in the wild now.

this photo journal about thumbelina was so precious. How adorable is she and how loving and wonderful are her parents. God bless all of you.
I've saved kitten only four days old, still blind and we kept one of them.He wasn't aware that he was a cat, didn't act like any cat I've ever had, I am not sure but I think that he was thinking that he is a human and I am his mom.
... "she would walk instead of running and sit instead of climbing" . Does nobody at BoredPanda understand verb tense agreement?
That just made my s****y day very very happy.....so freaking cute I'm dyinngggg
So adorable! All of them. Nice to see people caring. Good people. Refreshing...
Incredibly adorable and the reason why future generations will save some, hopefully most, of our planet's wildlife!
most marvellous indeed! rare phenomena and so endearing when you hear the story.
one time we had decided to help the local squirrel lady and take some baby squirrel to raise and let loose on the ranch when they were old enough..everything went after several times with several babies and then we got one that she was horrified about being out and so I got her and brought back in the house...we tried to see she would adapt one more time to outside living but no go...she was a character...Lucy..she lived about 12 yrs in the house.
What a sweet blessing!!! Whenever I see such heart touching sweetness, I turn it on my own sweet doggy blessing.
Whenever I see such sweetness that touches the heart, I take it out on my very sweet large fuzzy object who wags both her tail and her tongue.
Thumbelina is an absolutely gorgeous full-figured gal and she is so lucky to have found two such motivated and loving parents. A lot of love going on there among the three of you. Thank you for brightening my day!
Awwww! Now, ain't that cute. I mean, seriously! A squirrel ditched its heritage to become a tiny little human.
Oh my, so darn adorable, I have seen a story that a lady had also saved a baby, but in the spring it would not leave, she fixed a spare room with all things to keep it happy, but was very destructive !!!
gee whizz we dont have squirrels here but I want one, great patients mum and dad bless you
i'm smiling and it hurts because i've been like this for the past 6 minutes :)
No, Look! I agree those people saved the squirrel and it was going to die, but they should not have kept her as a pet. They did not adopt her, they just thought it would be nice to have a squirrel pet. Most of the western countries do have wildlife centres and even if 1 cannot take her, another one can. It is not allowed to keep wild animals for a reason. See fat lorry as an example. She is not showing healthy behavior. BoredPanda, stop giving people crazy and illegal ideas for pets!
She is obese! I know for people this is a taboo and we should accept our body, but animals dont have vain and their health is actually important. This squirrel is way overfed. Squirrels are not pets and in no way in my country is legal to have one. Probably the humans here just kept her as a pet without asking for help. No. The fact that she doesn't jump or climb is not a good sign
perhaps outside nest would have save another, just wait mother. and take them all some safe plase. you baby kidnapper. how dare you. andyou have fed it fat,why it is not in nature. cant say that you loveanimalsandnature
That's kind of a very misleading title. It makes it sound as though the man just found the squirrel, fell in love with it and then it just decided to stay with him and 'become a great pet', while the reality is the 'happy finder' had to call in specialists for the rescue and even they were unable to save both squirrels, and the one they were able to save will never be able to live freely in the wild. That's a sad story, not an 'omg so lucky!':/ Also, while it does appear that was the only option in this case, squirrels aren't pets. And she seems quite a bit overweight, is that normal for that kind of squirrels? Those here are usually like 5 times thinner, that just doesn't look healthy...
Yes, eastern grey squirrels are supposed to look like that.

Fat pets die earlier and can't enjoy life as much as they should.
