Owl Gets Rescued From Fire, Looks Angry As Hell And People Say It’s Funny
With its piercing yellow-eyed stare, deep, haunting hoot and mean hunting skills, the Great Horned Owl is exactly the kind that you used to read about in fairytales by the Brothers Grimm.
It is also one of the most common owls in North America and is mostly found deep in the forest, but you could also spot one in the desert, hiding away in city buildings, or even your backyard! Just make sure to go out at night because, like most owls, these majestic creatures are nocturnal.

So it was no wonder that this owl was a little miffed when he was found near the lines of the devastating Maria Fire in Ventura County, hopping amongst the ashes. It was the middle of the day, he’d lost his home and he couldn’t find anywhere to get some sleep!

The firefighters who found the owl said that it was very docile, and allowed them to wrap it safely in a jacket to prevent it from getting injured.

The bird was taken to the nonprofit Camarillo Wildlife for recovery, after which it will be released back to its home when conditions are safe.

“Many thanks to the hard-working VCFD handcrew who saved the life of this beautiful great horned owl,” Camarillo wrote on their Facebook page. “He was found among the ashes, disoriented and suffering from smoke inhalation and a bad case of flat flies. Thanks to these courageous men, he will make a full recovery and be released back to his territory as soon as it’s safe to do so.”

Thanks to the hard work and bravery of firefighters like those at the Ventura County Fire Department, the Maria Fire has now been largely contained, with all evacuation orders lifted. “We’re pretty much in the mop-up stage now,” fire Capt. Steve Kaufmann told the Los Angeles Times.

The story warmed the hearts of many – any good news coming out of these horrific, ever-increasing wildfires in the western United States is a small blessing.
Some people also pointed out the owl’s less-than-impressed expression throughout the rescue

Share on FacebookWe got to hold an owl at the Pittsburgh Aviary. Was not expecting them to be able to stare into your soul 😳
I don't think it's that funny, poor thing is traumatised and its habitat wrecked. Glad they've rescued it and hope it recovers.
I could be dead. It's not. To get through adversity, a lot of humans try to find humour in horrible situations. It can help make it more bearable, Smiling and laughing actually have biological benefits. Give it a go!
Load More Replies...Yes but fires are also natural and necessary for a healthy forest.
Load More Replies...The fires in California are so incredibly devastating that it probably didn’t have much safe “territory” to fly to safety. Furthermore, the smoke and ashes from the fires would likely reach above the canopy. Wildfires spread insanely quickly so many animals and birds can not outrun them. I believe the article said that the poor owl was suffering from smoke inhalation.
Load More Replies...Dammit it Steve put me down! How many times I tell you that this coat does not fit me?
"How many times do I have to tell you: I look Terrible in yellow!"
I think the best rescues by any first responder are always the animal rescues. I guess humans are part of that as well...
I am convinced without any scientific evidence that animals, humans excluded, can sense a killing intent, this explains why some human/ animal interactions are docile, when logic dictates the opposite.
