A Year Ago Our Adopted Kitten Was Fighting For Her Life, Now She’s Full Of Life And Half The Size Of A Normal Cat
80Kviews
I want to tell you the story of Shuri, our little Warrior Princess, the black kitten that we fell in love with and that we have been trying to nurse back to health for the past year. She had to battle numerous health issues since she was 2 months old. Some have put her life in danger, some have tested all of our patience and resistance but we are all fighters and we are not giving up.
Last year in May, I decided it was time we adopt a cat, I convinced my husband and started to look for a kitten. I really wanted to adopt a black cat because I know they are the last to get adopted. We found an add online with the last black kitten from its litter and we decided that was it – we’ve found what we wanted. We picked her up late one night from her owner and brought her home. She was a scrawny little fur ball with cloudy green eyes. She was so tiny she could fit in one hand.
More info: Facebook | Instagram
We decided to name her Shuri because we’d just watched Marvel’s Black Panther movie and we wanted a strong female name for her. It was destined to be this name, given all the health issues she has and how brave she’s been through it all. She is truly Shuri The Warrior Princess.
This is one of the first pictures of her. She was so tiny we were afraid not to step on her by accident. She was only 500 grams (1,1 pounds) when we adopted her, she was probably the last born and the smallest.
After one day in her new home, we took her to the vet to check if everything was alright. To our surprise, she had a fever so the vet gave her some injections to lower the fever and to treat the cause of it. Little did we know this was only the beginning of our one year struggle to save her life.
Just 2 weeks after we got her, she had to be hospitalized because the fever was worse than the first time, her eyes and nose were badly infected. The diagnosis was feline Herpesvirus infection or Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis. She probably got the infection when she was born, or soon after from her mother or the litter she was is. She was so fragile and weak, she had to be put on IV.
We found an amazing team of doctors at Speed Vet who took great care of her and helped her get better. They have been there for her in the past year and helped us deal with all the health issues she had.
During her stay at the vet, they discovered some other problems she had. She had a fungus on her skin that was causing her to lose her fur. Unfortunately, we also got infected with the fungus so the whole family was under treatment.
After 3 months of trips to the vet and dermatologist, dozens of pills and a couple of scares, we thought we were done, healthy and happy. But when she turned 6 months old we started to notice some strange blood spots on her eyes and ears. After doing some blood tests she was diagnosed with Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia – a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys blood platelets. This meant that in case of surgery, a severe fall or blow she could bleed out.
We battled this for another 6 months. It was very hard for all of us. The treatment gave some serious side effects and we had to be very careful with her.
Because her immune system was suppressed by the treatment, she got infected with the fungus again. So we had to fight with the fungus and the immune disease simultaneously.
She stopped growing when she was about 6 months old. Since then she has maintained the same weight (2,6 kg – 5.7 pounds). We think that it’s because of all the health issues she had and all the treatments she went through. She is about half the size of a normal cat but fortunately, that isn’t dangerous for her health.

She is one year old now and we can say that she is fungus free and she was healthy enough to be sprayed. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the cause of the immune disease so it’s possible it can reappear anytime, but we are hoping for the best.
It was a very hard and stressful year for all of us, but we are incredibly grateful she is alive and healthy and we enjoy every minute with her. We love her so much and we can’t imagine life without her.

Despite all the health issues, she is a very happy and playful cat. She runs around the house like she is a puma, she spends a lot of time at the windows birdwatching. She loves to cuddle with us, naps in our arms after we get home from work and only sleeps between us in bed. She likes to wake us up very early in the morning to play with her, chews on our ankles and, like all cats, she loves to hide in boxes and paper bags.
This one is called the Shurizaurus pose. She still has the IV mittens here.
She has a great personality. We love to dress her up and take photos of her and most of the time, she collaborates. I particularly love, when I manage to capture her pink tongue in action.

Thank you so much :). The Shurizaurus pose is her thing, she still does it. It happens when she is very playful, she likes to "attack" us-jumps around the bed and we have to follow her. And she takes that pose, at first we thought she was afraid but it's just her mood.
She is a beautiful, petite mini-panther. Thank you for not giving up on her. You should check with her doctors about incorporating colloidal silver into her diet to boost her immune system.
She is too cute when see does her "I'm a big fierce girl" act! I love the name Shuirzaurus!
I would love to know what startled her so much in the Shurizaurus mitts pic, both scary and funny. Was it a cucumber?

She is so spoiled right now, but given the number of times we almost lost her, it's understandable.
Ah - you can't spoil perfection! She's a darling little thing.
She deserves being spoiled with her past. Lovely kitty.
After all she’s been through she deserves to be spoiled 💖
Before we have a car accident, our (cat) love to lay on the car dashboard, after the crash, we were so lucky on that night we didn't brought her with us. We were almost not made it imagine she ain't got no seat belt...I don't want to imagine but pls get the cat carrier for her safety.
@Patti "Is this how you really talk?" Are you kidding? Or is this the way you treat someone who doesn't have English as their first language? Meeow may need to use Google translate to relay a message in English.... But it's clear that while your education included English..it failed at making you a decent human being....
Shame on you Patti for being so critically judgmental. When did you start sitting at the right hand of God!
I am wondering how many languages can you speak, Patti.
I appreciate your comment and I agree. But I would like to add that we are unable to use a carrier with one of our cats because of his seizures. We have to give him meds to keep him calm for the car ride to the vet, but he stays in the back seat on the floor with me. We only take him for vet trips, and the vets understand and don’t mind we have to hold him while waiting because he’s too scared to leave our arms voluntarily. Luckily our vet is close. We may be moving soon and unfortunately there’s no way to avoid the highway so I’m terrified of that trip. His sister will be in her carrier which will be belted in. I get so nervous when I see people with pets on laps while driving.
This comment was in reply to Meeow. Patti is evil, btw.
I had to go back & forth between all the comments trying to figure out who was talking about what and to whom! I finally figured it out but wonder, whoever is monitoring this whole thread, why some attempt at clarification wasn't made.
Not to rub your nose in it, but a cat should ALWAYS be in a pet carrier when riding in the car. When I was little we took our cat to the vet in a picnic basket. Yes, a picnic basket. I would be sitting in the back trying to keep her from escaping. Finally Dad bought a real cat carrier.
I love ❤️ the picnic basket ...that was quite original.

Really, Patti? I'd guess that English is not this person's native language. You can't see past the technicalities of composition? I read a very heartfelt message from someone who wants to participate.

She's beautiful enough to not need costumes and props. But, if she's cool with the extras I'll be happy to shut up and enjoy them, too.
We enjoy dressing her up, especially when we go out with her, we have cold winters in Romania. But most of the times she is "nude" in her beautiful black fur. I understand all your concerns about the carrier but we let her stay when we are stopped or parked because she gets anxious.
If she's willing to put up with it, then go for it. If I tried to put clothes on one of ours, I would pay, either then or later.
Alusair — it looks to be when the car was stopped so the kitty was probably just resting or posing for a picture. Tiny Dynamite — if she’s cool with, great. I’m sure her owner would never do it to her if she didn’t like it. Just because some cats don’t like it doesn’t mean others won’t either. I have one dog who loves to be dressed in a sweater if we go on walks in the winter, the other would never stand for it. Owners shouldn’t make their pets uncomfortable but we should trust them to be able to make responsible decisions and tell if their pet doesn’t like something. Both of you need to stop criticizing the way she cares for her cat, it has made a beautiful recovery and she’s obviously doing a wonderful job taking care of it. Yes we should step in when there’s an abusive owner but it’s not your pet so it’s not your job to decide how she’s cared for.
You are a blessing to her..God smiles when His critters are well cared for...amen!
Stop driving her on the dashboard and get a proper carrier please.
Well, please stop dressing her her. She's a living creature, not a toy for your amusement. That kind of thing can make them stressed because they feel they are trapped.
I too had a cat with health problems...but poor Maggie Ann didn't make it. :( We got her from the local Humane Society, and she had fleas, ear mites...and a brain tumor. She also didn't grow past 6 months but we didn't really notice at first, and then the tumor diagnosis. She ended up completely paralyzed, and the vet said she was miserable, so we had her put down a few days after Christmas. Glad your sweetie is doing okay, because that's never something a pet parent wants to go through!
Sorry to hear that Ann. She's with some of my cats now and all the other cats that went over the rainbow bridge before. I know how hard it is to put down a loved cat around christmas. We had to put down our 16 year old friend Mickey 4 days before Christmas in 2016. It was a tough christmas that year.
Sorry about your Mickey, too. I'm glad you got more time with him!
I love ❤️ your comment...and I know all about the 🌈 bridge...the story always bring tears 😭 to my eyes.
Sorry about your Maggie
Oh now you care? Or "ain't" you got no heart...lol

You didn't see Patti's comment making fun of the authors English? It was pretty pathetic of Patti to make such an uncaring remark. Such a Troll thing to do. The kitten is precious and so lucky to have Simona to care for her.
oh fuck, why??? why must the trolls come to this beautiful story??

Nope. You're the only one with a negative comment there, Patti. Meows is just concerned with the kitty's safety.
You deserve all the good in the world for fighting with this kitty.
Thank you
I'm proud of you Simona. You have a wonderful caring heart. Thank you for sharing your story. I will keep Shuri, in my prayers.
What a beautiful little girl and beautiful soul you folks have to have helped her all the way. It's great to know that she is healthy for the moment and I wish you and the little one that it'll stay that way. She seems to be a normal cat, very playful and full of energy and I bet you have a lot of fun with her. - One thing to note: This article does show another important thing, which you have to consider when you get in a cat or another animal. It can get expensive, quickly! You really should think about it, when you consider of getting a companion animal. Do not just get them and hope for the best. It will fail! Ask yourself if you are able to pay for food and health of your new friend. I have seen it so many times, that people haven't been able to pay for the costs. That doesn't mean that they didn't love their friend, but again, vet costs can get pretty high in no time! Once we had to pay over 1500 Dollar for one of our cats and that is nowhere near of how high it can get.
Yes. So true. We had a dog for 3 months that started to have back problems ( she was supposedly 2 years old) long story short, she needed a $6,500 back surgery or be put down. We opted for surgery, we were already in love with her
Thank you, it's true, it was not cheap to make sure she is healthy but we we're lucky we could afford all of it.
Too true. I adopted a new cat back in July, and last month he got diagnosed with diabetes. His meds aren't breaking the bank, but they are definitely an unexpected expense!
Been there. We had an old cat, who had diabetes too. It's not overly expensive, but with it comes a lot of trouble and you need good time management. The good thing is, that once everything is settled, both humans and the cat can live with it. Our cat lived four more years after the diagnoses and became 17 years old in the end. I wish you and your cat all the best!
She reminds me of the little black kitty we had when I was a teenager. My sister found her tied up in a bag near a creek. Not sure how long she'd been there, but she was very small with a head that was larger than it should be. We named her Grace, after Grace Slick of the Jefferson Airplane. This was in the late 60's :) She never grew very big and her head was always out of proportion, and she was a bit goofy (brain damage/malnutrition maybe?) but she was just the sweetest and most beautiful little thing and everyone loved her. She loved to sit on our shoulders, even if we were walking around. One of the best rescue kitties that we ever had! <3
So pleased the little monster is dong well, such a terrible time you had, I adopted a little black kitten a few years ago as my other cat was in dire need of a friend, my girl is a little fire ball loves to play and brought my other one out of depression, it takes love and dedication to do all we can for our pets, I hope you are forever blessed. !!!
Great comment...Sharron...I personally believe that no pet should be raised alone...I have 3 cats and 2 dogs ...all found wondering and hungry in need of a loving 🥰 forever home....and their all indoor pets...that keeps them safe at 🏡
She looks so sweet. We had a tiny Persian kitten she had papers. But she also was born and should not have. They only have 2 kittens at a time. She was three and so tiny she could fit in my husbands pocket. he would put her there and take her the vet on base when he had lunch. When she got old enough we had her spayed as she could not have babies unless she went to stay at the vets home so he could watch her as he would take the kittens a week before they would be born. So for her we just had the spaying done. She never weight 5 lbs. 4 lbs is all she every got. But lived 18 years old when she passed away.
You were great parents to your fir baby Kenneth...18 is a awesome age.. I just lost my oldest this year at 16...Their @ the 🌈 bridge wating for us. 😺

PSA: If you have a cat, please throw out all scented oil diffusers. Sticks, plug in etc. About half of the oils used are toxic to cats (and dogs) and they will get liver failure from it.

So glad that you found her or maybe she found you. So happy she is doing better. Hurray for giving a beautiful black cat a home
Sometimes we say that she chose us, that it was made to be. It's heartbreaking to think that if we hadn't got her that night, she might not have survived. We we're all very lucky.
My feelings exactly Simona...your an exception to the rule...many couldn’t afford the cost and many wouldn’t have chose to spend the money if they had it. I personally believe in the “care credit card”...going in debt is nothing new here...lol..my pets are #1!

Yes, indeed. The cat should start thinking if she wants bee as an appetizer, or for desert.
Hm, this might ACTUALLY be Trump! He used “desert” instead of “dessert”!
She is so cute! About her size, she may just be like that, my Ninna who is a 5 year old healthy kitty, mother of 4 is about the size of your Shuri, if not smaller... I wish you all, all the best in life!
I have a tiny muffin baby that looks a lot like her, though she isn't dwarfed at all and comes in at a hefty 7 lbs. lol. She's my little butterball baby. Black cats are the best!!!
She's absolutely adorable! What a little cutie. Give her a tender kiss from me on her pretty little nose. <3
Thank you for not giving up on this little one!
She is gorgeous. Well done for persevering through all her illnesses- she's worth it.
All cats deserve a loving home. We're just happy we could help with all she needed.
Goooaaal!
Did you go after the breeder? That's the person who should be paying the vet bills. There's no way they didn't know that the litter has issues. ...///... That said, we adopted Nini from a shelter when she was about 12 weeks old. She'd been fostered and wasn't ill when we got her, but she was the only survivor of a litter of six that had distemper. She wasn't supposed to live, but she's tougher than any vet.
We tried for a couple of months to get n contact with the breeder but she went off the grid. After that we decided just to focus our efforts on her, the best doctors and treatments.
Thank you for adopting a black kitten. So sorry you had to go through so much trauma and vet visits. So GLAD that she is healthy now. Good luck with your little parlor panther. I also have one, a male Ninja. I got him from our local kill shelter. I love him, he's such a hoot.
Thank you, we have no regret, we just hope for the best. We like to call her our little black panther.
OMG SHE IS SOOOOO PRETTY!!! looks like a total sweetheart!!! ^-^
I LOVE IT
She's adorable. I just lost my little boy to the Herpes virus and its cruel side effects. I've been devastated. I'm so grateful she came through. I miss my boy so, so much.

I'm so sorry for you. It's terrible to lose your pet, it was touch and go for us when she was hospitalized but we we're lucky.
Many people would have simply put her down with all of those health problems. You are wonderful people for helping her through them instead.
Thank you for your kind words.
She's a very lucky kitty. Long life and happiness to you all.
Awww that is so cute!!!
Everything great (and beautiful kitty) except for the 'wakes us up very early in the morning' part.
The "perks" of being owned by a mini panther, I'm sure every cat parent can relate.
My aunt's cat also was very sick when she was a kitten. Consequently, she now is handicapped as it affected her nervous system, and she walks very wobbly and dysfunctionally
pretty cute
Your kitty is so precious and may God bless you for loving this kitten so much that you saved her life and nursed her back to life.
What a beautiful story. This precious little girl would never have survived if you and your family didn’t rescue her and do everything in your power to save her. Thank you and God bless you 💖🐾💖
Wonderful story and beautiful photos. Makes me want to hug my own small (16 year old) black cat. Thank you.
What a cute little kitty! She is lucky that you found her and have taken such good care of her. Hopefully her medical problems are behind her and you will have a long and happy time together.
She is a beautiful wee girl. And a very blessed one to have parents who love her so much and are willing to go out of their way to make sure all her health issues are taken care of no matter the cost. You are truly wonderful and loving people.
She certainly picked the right family! A long + happy life to all of you! :)
I’m so glad the cat is alright and I’m glad you stayed with her. I think some people would have turned her back over to where they got her because they did not want to deal with all the health issues but I’m so glad that you did. I think it made a big difference in the cat knowing she had a family there for her.
So love this. So glad you found her.

How fortunate this little one was to have been adopted by you. 99% of anyone else having her would have been unaffordable and sure death. God bless you for your unconditional love.
very adoring (y)
For what it's worth we had 3 cats with feline HIV. Got them about 4 or 5 months old (rescues) and had them till they were about 21 years old but they were indoor cats only.
forever a kitten. Bless you for taking care of her.

Give her homeopathy drops made of gold and silver. I’ve a weak immune system and have thank God found this treatment to overcome infections. This is much better than antibiotics if taken after a cure of antibiotics. I took this formula for a year and now once’s a year I have a cure of 3 months to keep my system healthy. Please consult your Veterinaire.
She's gorgeous :)
A fighter and a survivor. She still has 6 or 7 lives left and I'll bet she makes old bones. Pretty as all get out too!
Thank you for posting this. It gives me some hope. I have three kittens. For the past 3 months, my kittens have various sickness. From viral fever to eye ulcers and now fungus. Its taking a toll on me... I am so tired... since I am alone taking care of them. But I am gonna hope for the best. Hopefully my kittens will be sick-free cat after 6 months.
It's clear that you love your kitty a whole lot. Vet bills can be very expensive and many don't bother—so wonderful that you fought for her and that she is obviously extremely well loved and happy. The shuriasaurus is too adorable! May you have many happy healthy years together.
What a pretty girl! I have a tiny kitty too. I think his growth was stunted due to malnutrition before we rescued him.
Beautiful!
Kitty had a rough first year, so glad you were there to keep her feeling safe and loved! Very adorable kitty and looks so happy now!

Awww, I love her. I used to have a black cat called Samhain so I have a soft spot in my heart for them. Boy was she sure lucky you came around! Thank you for being the best a human can be.
Thank god for you coming into her life. Not many families this day and age could afford that kind of special care. You will be rewarded with so much love from you newest family member! She's gorgeous and grateful to you as well.
Thank you for choosing a black kitty and keeping her and getting the medical help she needs. A pregnant stray adopted us 16 years ago and the first born was a big black kitten. Even though he was the biggest he was shy and skittish. We immediately decided to keep him for the same reason as you, we knew he would be hard to adopt out. When he was 1 year he started having sezuires. Then we find out he has hip displaysia and arthritis and chronic constipation and eventually a heart murmur. We have a great veternarian who has helped keep him happy and comfortable all this time. We call him our million dollar kitty. But we wouldn’t change a thing!
Gorgeous cat! Also, Ikea has paper bags?
Thank you, also, in Romania they do :)
She is such a beautiful little kitten. You did an amazing job to keep her alive and well. Well done to everyone involved with her care. She really go to a great loving and caring family. I hope you all have an amazing long and happy life together.

We were almost not made it imagine she ain't got no seat belt? Are you kidding? Or is this how you really talk?

Laura Avila ?
I'm so sorry to hear that.

i don't see any negative comments yet...hooray! this story deserves only love
HAHA niles, but true

Meows comment

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I didn’t know this...glad I never used them..thanx for the great 👍
A beautiful little girl, and kudos to you for your love and concern for her! Great work and care!
