Kahn and Sheila belonged to the same owner who used to rent them for photo ops and parties like many of his other lion cubs. Luckily, the two lions were rescued by Texas’ In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center, but months apart. 6-year-old Kahn was malnourished and the end of his tail was chewed off, probably because of stress and boredom, but he was easy to treat due to his friendly character. Sheila, on the other hand, was dying.
15-month-old Sheila was so weak, she couldn’t even stand up. She lay lifeless and vomited all the time but the rescue refused to give up on her. “For two weeks Vicky [the rescue’s founder] had to hand feed Sheila – rolling up meatballs and pushing them down her throat,” In-Sync’s Angela Culver told Bored Panda. Sheila also had toxoplasmosis, an illness that results in a loss of appetite and lethargy, but Keahey kept on treating her and she began to recover. “It took some time to recover, but they both did” Culver said of Sheila and Kahn. The two were moved next door to each other and it was love at first sight. After 3 months of ‘dating,’ the two majestic lions were let to get ‘married’ and have been living in the same enclosure ever since. They’re crazy for each other! And the guy who abused them? He got his license revoked and is no longer allowed to keep exotic animals.

Sheila was dying when she was rescued from a man who used to rent her for photo ops and parties
“For two weeks Vicky [the rescue’s founder] had to hand feed Sheila – rolling up meatballs and pushing them down her throat”
When Sheila recovered, she was moved next door to Kahn, another lion rescued from the same man
It was love at first sight
The lions were allowed to ‘date’
The rescue did short dates for the two lions every day until the dates didn’t need to be supervised anymore
“After three months of increasingly longer and less supervised visits, they were moved in together full-time”
Of course, Sheila was spayed
The lovebirds have been living in the same enclosure ever since
They’re crazy for each other!
And the guy who abused these magnificent creatures?
He got his license revoked and is no longer allowed to keep exotic animals!
Thank you, Angela Culver, for talking to Bored Panda about these magnificent lions!

Share on FacebookTaking the man's license is not enough. He should have been put in a small cage and starved and see how he liked it.
I love how they tell the story. Supervised dates... unsupervised dates... nights together... wedding. In fact it's almost like human teenagers growing up. ^_^
And... Are they still together? Is Sheila still alive? How are they now?

Load More Replies...That's what I was thinking too but maybe it's because of her illnesses when they got her. Maybe she has other health problems that they didn't mention and that would represent a danger for the health of any future cub. Note that they didn't spay the male, so they might have spayed the female for a good reason.
Load More Replies...Probably late on this, but never too late for a little jail time, right? How can people do these things and expect to get away with it. Jail is probably just a little bit better than what he deserves. I wonder if he has neighbors who are not happy with the guy next door? Yes, I see small cage in a few posts here. Whatever happened to JUSTICE anyway?

How awful that people are allowed to have wild animals at stores, at farms for other idiots to shoot and to rent. It's not a civilized country with law and order who allows anything like this!
Most states don't have any laws regarding the ownership of exotic animals. The documentary "The Elephant in the Living Room" is a real eye opener.
Seriously?! After what those two went through you took away Shielas breeding rights, now that shes found love with Khan? They should be allowed to breed, have a cub or two while their still young and healthy. That beautiful white furred lioness, might have been able to produce more white furred cubs. Plus isn't lions nearly an endangered species or something because of hunters? You just helped lower the population by denying them the chance to help produce the next generation of lions.
It hurts my heart that so many human beings are sociopaths. It gives me hope that there are so many people with compassion (and money to spare)
Wow! Beautiful story! I'd love to visit and volunteer for these lions.
Thank you to the human people who spend their days and nights looking after animals in this way. You (collectively) are a species of HERO who we should all aspire to be. Thank you again for your incredible efforts. Those lions are looking awesome.
