Rescue Dog Comforts His Injured Friend Who’s Been Through Hell Just Like Him

Simon, a border collie recovering from his injuries, came towards Sammie, a 4-month-old boxer mix, and carefully rested his paw on Sammie’s. Even though both of the dog’s rescues were weeks apart, it looked as if Simon knew exactly what Sammie was going through after a surgical procedure at Rescue Dogs Rock NYC.

“They met at the vet, and Simon immediately formed this beautiful animal friendship with Sammie,” Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, told Bored Panda. “He is protective of him.” Sammie has been through hell. The poor pooch was not only spray-painted; he was shot in the head and dragged by a car. Simon is checking on his little best friend all the time. Though Simon will recover and be available for dog adoption soon, Sammie still has a long way to go.

“We are not sure yet [if Sammie will be able to recover fully] because he just had surgery,” explained O’Sullivan. “The vet needs two weeks to see if his leg can be saved. Infection is the biggest worry. He is at risk of losing 1 or 2 legs, but we are doing everything to save them.” If you want to help this cute dog recover, you can donate to the animal shelter here.

“They met at the vet and Simon was immediately drawn to Sammie. He is protective over him,” said Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC

Though Sammie still has a long way to go to recover, he’s in good hands (and paws)

Thank you, Jackie O’Sullivan, for talking to Bored Panda about Simon and Sammie!

What slurry of human life does this to another living creature? What pleasure is gained by this awful behaviour, I hope what goes around, comes around for them.

People who do animals harm need to die...they do not deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of us.

I will never accept or understand how any person could do this to a beautiful innocent animal. What fun they get out of torturing a baby. I won't even use the word human for them, they are monsters. this bond is so beautiful. They have more compassion for the hurt than most people.

I hope there is some justice found. Horrifying story. So great to see enough funds were raised for his recovery.

They BOTH deserve all the love they can get... but I wonder if, because of the bond, and Sammie's "long road" to recovery - maybe it would be best if Simon stayed a bit longer - at least until Sammie is out of the woods. ---------------- Honestly, the ideal would be if they got adopted together so they could remain buddies for the long term. But even if that's not possible, as long as Sammie is benefiting from Simon's affection, it might be worth keeping him around a bit longer to make sure Sammie fully recovers.

I just hate to see true animal friends separated - even if it is for an adoption. They don't understand why they're being taken from their friend (or why the friend is suddenly gone), and we know they feel the loss. It reminds me of the days of slavery when children were separated from their parents and siblings to be sold to another plantation or something. We know better now, with humans anyway... isn't it time we knew better with pets as well?

To spray paint and shoot a dog then drag it is inhuman so I will not call these monsters human. This dog is showing more love and compassion than many people would. That little face is so sweet. I pray you can save his legs. As for the other beautiful pup, I pray he finds a home that will love him and treasure him like the gift he is. Actually I wish that for both.

It is mindboggeling to think that someone treats a puppy that way: a creature that is born to follow and love humans. Where just looking into its eyes should turn any normal human being to happy mush. But then I remember what some people do to their own babies.... There are too many psychopaths in this world. This lack of empathy cannot just be due to a bad childhood. It must be pathological. We really need to find a cure.

Evil is alive and well in this world. Thank God there are loving and caring souls who rescue these abused animals... I look into a dogs eyes and I see a soul. My heart hurts when I think about the cruelty that some evil ones inflict on helpless animals and the pain they must feel. God thank you for these creatures wo make our lives better and richer. I'd rather be around pets than humans for the most part!

This makes me hate people even more. NO animal deserves to be treated and tortured like this. The people that do these kind of inhumane things to dogs and other animals are the ones that turn out to be serial killers or psychopaths. Dogs give you unconditional love. Do humans do that? Hardly. I hope this bonded pair can be adopted together. Prayers for these two sweet babies. All I can say is that karma's a b***h.

Really needs to be tougher laws against animal abuse and more done to teach compassion towards animals. I don't understand why people do this. But understanding that is part of the way forward, life is too cheap.
