Empty pockets, all-nighters, annoying professors, more all-nighters... It's difficult to explain what being a student is really like in just a few words. So let's do it through memes.

Bored Panda has looked through the Internet far and wide for the funniest, most creative pictures that capture the true essence of school life. So whether you're preparing for class and need a break or simply want to reminisce about the old days, continue scrolling and check out what we've come up with!

Of course, the pandemic made sure there's nothing “normal” or “routine” about this academic year, with some classes being in-person or mixed-mode and some remote; the need to wear masks and observe social distancing; and the restrictions on gatherings.

Talking to PennState News, some of their freshmen shared how they are navigating college during these challenging times, and ways they are finding to have fun.

"It was my dream to come to Penn State after hearing all my dad's stories about his time as a student," Angie Busch said. "It's obviously hard for everyone to adjust, but I make sure to do my part because I don't want to leave the happiest place on Earth."

"With all the protocols in place, I have been able to explore a lot of campus with my roommate. We have found a good group of friends to hang out with in a socially distant manner. We aren't going to let this virus ruin our time here."

Pupperochini Report

Tommy Doughty, who has one class in person per week, said things are a little different but he's "been able to adapt and so far at Penn State I have been having a great time."

"Since this is my first college experience, it's weird. However, we have to make the most of it, and I am only here for four years so I have been trying to maximize the number of people I meet. I have learned over the years that positivity is key and that even though our classes aren’t in person, there is still tons of fun to be had at Penn State," Doughty explained.

Suspension of face-to-face teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to concerns about consequences for students' learning. While data on this subject remains limited, one 2021 study evaluated the effect of school closures on primary school performance in The Netherlands.

"Our results reveal a learning loss of about 3 percentile points or ... the equivalent to one-fifth of a school year, the same period that schools remained closed," the researchers wrote. "Losses are up to 60% larger among students from less-educated homes, confirming worries about the uneven toll of the pandemic on children and families."

"The findings imply that students made little or no progress while learning from home and suggest losses even larger in countries with weaker infrastructure or longer school closures."

Well, at least we have memes to ease the situation while things slowly return to normal.

To change my major I had to meet with the head of dept to explain why. I couldn't do a major in bio anth so I was doing in I anth, but some aspects I had less interest in, and one class was soul crushingly tedious. Turns out that the head of Anth dept was also my lecturer in the boring class. Such an awkward conversation, definitely filed in my brain's "remember when you did this?" cringe category

People with good looks always get appraised more than people who actually have something to offer to society. I don't know if it's something new or if it's always been like that.

It's called "Halo Effect". Try calling out someone for 'grading you too good'. Look at their confused faces 🤢

I do not understand this one... Maybe because I am not an american. Like, does anyone really give a f**k about athletes in college?

The ultimate deciding factor in America is your extracurricular. If you do sports and at least have an existing brain, you get all of the scholarships especially if your black. If your really smart, but don't do any sports, you'll lose the scholarship to Mr. Sportywithatleastasemifunctionalbrain if your unlucky. If your REALLY REALLY unlucky, you don't even get a spot. Guess who does? Mr. Sportywithasemifunctionalbrain. Honestly though, that's what I heard and know. I'm still in grade school, so I haven't applied yet.

This is only in the US. I can't imagine offering free tuition for non-academic reasons and then charging those likely to succeed a fully £20k or whatever. It simply doesn't exist here, and can't, university education is free

I hate this stereotype. I am an athlete and you could still be really smart and and be good at sports. You don't just look at their athletic abilities you look at their academic abilities.

Amen. Many student athletes are working twice as hard having to balance it all. My daughter is stellar at this and top in academics and athletics. You fail you lose your athletic scholarship people. When student athletes excel, grad schools look at these positive traits as a positive as well and sweep them up quickly.

I cant agree with this. Plenty of athletes work hard and deserve this. There are plenty of instances in history where athletes get what they deserve. But, smart kids should ALSO get equal oppurtunities to.

This is mainly because the colleges sports team really needs you but in order to get that scholarship you must have good grades too. I was just offered a scholarship for baseball but declined due to rumors of a toxic school environment

The difference is the good students in this already have light and the lamp is giving the athletes the light they need

This isn't even strictly for college. Do you know how long it took for me to learn long division? No one taught me it because they all expected me to know it already.
