Don’t you ever feel like we take things too seriously? I mean, if the heating stops working, there are many very questionable, yet bizarrely ingenious ways to go about it—like putting a fan next to the oven. It’s totally not smart, not safe, it doesn’t work, and it’s basically a plain horrible idea.

But in the bizarre and crazy world of “Redneck Engineering,” things are always far from the norm. Before we step into the Reddit community r/RedNeckEngineering, I should warn you not to try this at home under any circumstances. Because safety will likely be breached, and the gadgets you’ll see will raise an alarming level of suspicion.

So let’s see what the buzz is all about in this hilarious subreddit with 354k members that has been rolling since 2013. Whether it's a curse or a blessing, we will find out.

Bored Panda reached out to the founder of r/RedneckEngineering to find out more about their community. It turns out, the term “redneck engineering" is open for interpretation, but the redditor assured us that it's also “the kind of thing you know when you see.”

For example, “It can range from something as common as using a hand mirror to replace a side-view mirror to something complex like building a backyard water slide with a loop-de-loop.” The members of the subreddit give “bonus points if it'd make an OSHA inspector cringe.”

Something so simple and genius. I never would of thought of doing that, yet seeing it makes it seem so obvious.

The fact that this man understands the importance of levelness indicates that he is way ahead of the average person. And, his his solution to not having a level, is nothing short of brilliance.

this is how it's done in much of the world. indeed, before laser levels, a garden hose with clear tubing at each end was used for leveling over long stretches.

I remember reading (and even seeing in a silent film, if I recall) that alot of construction men in the 1900s and 1910s did exactly this with a water bottle to level surfaces they were constructing

I just borrowed a level from a friend to hang a curtain rod. I could have used one of my wife's empty gin bottles (haha).

A few years out of college I visited a friend on a downtown high-rise job site. They were pouring the concrete that made up the central core a few floors at a time, and when they raise the forms, they checked the water level of hoses at each corner to ensure it was level. Of course a bubble level used by every carpenter uses water too.

This is very likely how our fancy, mass-produced levels came into being...Not unsafe, very clever.

Sure, why not?? They just need to draw a straight line on the bottle with a marker. Looks like the left side (our left) needs to go up just a wee bit. :-)

An old, tried & true method in places where tools are worth a month's salary. Notice they work without gloves, which IMO would be first priority for safety, closed shoes second. So no, not redneck; the improvisational brilliance of the poor, upwardly striving, probably 'professional' builder in his area.

It's obvious that this way of doing it existed in the first place, long before builder's professional levels were produced and sold. We're so accustomed to buying manufactured tools for anything that we're amazed at very simple, practical handmade solutions.

Water levels have been used in construction for centuries. Even as recently as 15 years ago I saw bricklayers using a long water line (fairly thin clear tube line) to level brick wall and make sure the wall is level across the whole length of the house.

Am I stupid for not getting it? Isn't the water level just showing the exact same "level" as the bar? How to judge if it's level?

Think again. Only when the water level is showing the exact same level as the bar IS when the bar is level.

I'm sorry, how is this brilliant? Without the vertical guides and a bubble all you're doing is duplicating what is visible immediately beneath the bottle. Legitimately, this is only brilliant to anyone who doesn't understand how a level works.

The biggest difference between now and the old days in 2013 when r/RedneckEngineering was created is growth. The founder said that he used to be responsible for most of the posts, but the community has become really self-sustaining over time.

When it comes to submissions, you’ll see all kinds of bizarre makeshift gadgets and very questionable workarounds. Most posts generally come from people finding “low-budget workarounds to everyday problems with a few high-effort engineering projects and other submissions sprinkled in.”

It annoys me every time I hear people complain about the amount of air in snack chip bags. 1.) The air is necessary, because without it, the chips would get crushed during shipment. 2.) THEY'RE SOLD BY WEIGHT. It doesn't matter if there's empty space in the bag, 5 ounces (or however much in a given bag) is 5 ounces. Learn to read labels
