I Adopted A Kitten With Huge ‘Glass’ Eyes After He Was Found Abandoned On A Porch And He Is Now Our Family Member
Here is the story of a very special kitten. Porg was found abandoned in a cardboard box on the porch of one of my clients (I am a small veterinarian). When she found him in his box he had a large wound on his neck, which was presumed at that time to be caused by some sort of trauma. He was also a very small kitten, weighing over just 1 pound. He was taken to the ER veterinarian where his wound was repaired with stitches.

The next day she brought him in to see me for a full examination. I think everyone in that room described it as love at first sight! He was so unusual and I just adored his feisty spirit – I believe I described him as 1.3 pounds of eyeballs and sass. So when it was suggested that I foster him until he was healthy and oversee his recovery, how could I say no!? He, of course, came home with me that day and he became a permanent member of our family.
At first we thought he was just unusual in appearance- he had VERY large eyes and a few other anatomical variants (like a smaller lower jaw) but otherwise, he seemed healthy. It was his large eyes that landed him the name of Porg, inspired after a creature in Star Wars. However we soon learned that he was not normal- things like grooming or scratching his ears or neck would lead to large recurrent tears in his skin, which is obviously not normal for a kitten.
So it was during surgical repair of one of these wounds that I performed a skin biopsy to see what the underlying cause may be. It, unfortunately, confirmed my suspicion that Porg suffered from a hereditary collagen defect, which is known most commonly as Elhers Danlos Syndrome. This is quite unusual in cats and is what earned him his nickname of a “glass kitten”, he is just so incredibly fragile.
We share a special bond with him and just adore him. It has been quite a difficult learning process finding what helps to keep his skin healthy and safe, but we now have our routine down and he has been doing great!
Clothing has been incredibly important in protecting his skin. We are always looking for outfits that fit the best and provide the most coverage while ensuring he is comfortable.
Porg also suffers from an eye condition called lens luxations. Lens luxations have also been reported in some cats with Elhers Danlos Syndrome. At this time his eyes are well managed with daily eye drops.
We would describe Porg’s personality as larger than life! He loves to play and be active.
However, once he quiets down, he is the biggest cuddler and has the loudest purr.
We are so lucky to be able to share his unique and adorable journey with the world. Porg hopes to inspire others to open their hearts to special needs animals!

Share on FacebookThis little guy has had such an unfortunate start in his life, abandoned and fragile to boot. He was so lucky to have a home with someone who understands and loves him and has the means to care for him properly. There are truly Angels among us like these folks.
And I'll bet he was abandoned BECAUSE he was sick and fragile. Animals are amazing. People sometimes not so much :)
Load More Replies...God bless you for bringing that kitten back to a healthy and happy state. This poor kitty wouldn't've been living had it not been for you. It really makes me happy that there are people out there like you who are willing to clean up the mess that wrongdoers leave behind. Hats off to you!
Such a beautiful kitten and what a wonderful story. I'm not crying I tell you! I'm not!
Oh my god, I had no idea cats could have EDS! I have EDS! Poor little dude, at least he's got good people looking out for him.
The little mark on his chin makes him look so surprised all the time! He always looks so full of curiosity and wonder!
My reaction to each picture: AW (with varying degrees of emotion.) This precious kitty is so beautiful and I'm so glad he found loving owners that know how to take care of him!
What a dear little guy - I liked the photo with the leg sewed onto his clothing. He was lucky to find you.
Wow. He's gorgeous. It's sad some people don't see the beauty in him.
He's cute! Any animal should get one chance ... one that works out fine. If it takes two, two ... three, three ... he was lucky he finally got his chance - I guess he suffers from what is called glass-bone-disease...? Glad he was found ... early enough ... he probably wouldn't have lived to see a third chance. People abandoning animals make me somewhat angry ... cowards with no feelings....
They left it at a vet though, instead of dumping it on the road, they may have had financial worries that wouldn't let them care for the kitty

As a human with EDS, I can easily understand how a cat afflicted with it could wound herself just in daily care. I have to admit I'm also curious about how hypermobile she is. Cats are so bendy anyway; an EDS cat mustbe amazing! The mascot of EDS and other rare and often misdiagnosed diseases is the zebra. Obviously, Porg isn't really a tuxedo: she's just showing her zebra side!
His eyes are the same of one of my cats, she has some "blind patch" so she can't see very well, but she's a lovely lady still.
Good for you but as a vet you should know that "take care of this kitty for a little while" is right up there with the check is in the mail and you'll feel a little pinch . About an hour and a couple purrs is all most people can hold out.
Thank you for taking such good care of this cute baby. (love the clothes!)
I’m glad how comfortable he is though with his condition my cat well she wouldn’t no matter how comfortable it would make her to feel Better nope when she got fixed and had to take medicine she spit it back at us several times so I’m glad he is comfortable with it
What a little stunner, he has melted my heart. He needed help and the first humans abandoned him, the cowardly scumbags. But he found this angel. Thanks to all involved in helping this little guy, you are good people.
i want that heckin cat booper he is so coot i luv him what kind of cat is he?
Good for you... I am happy the kitty found you! I recently had to let go of my older Chihuahua, Picchu, who was born from full bred, show-quality parents with both eyes deformed. He went on to develop severe and chronic periodontitis, which was untreatable and eventually cost him all of his teeth and made his breath absolutely foul, but he was the sweetest dog ever... My younger Chihuahua was born with one finger missing on both front paws, which is a severe deformity, and she also doesn't have a full set of teeth, but who cares? I am happy every time I see her, at day break, when I come home from work, etc... I actually paid money for both dogs...
Well this is my first time hearing that cats can have such a condition, I'm glad the little fur ball is feeling better now. (and my god those beautiful eyes :,3) A Cat like that deserves a good loving family just like this one.
Omg you are so blessed to have this little creature in your life and he is one lucky little dude to have found his forever home with you
I love that little leopard print outfit on him! Cats deserve love. All of them.
Poor baby looks like he's starting to lose his eyesight. He's adorable though!
If people spent half the time caring for other people that they lavish on ill animals, we'd have eliminated poverty by now.
This may be one of the cutest animals I have ever seen. God Bless you and Porg!
It's good and relieving to see that there ar Humans out there. I'm so happy for the kitty! I always went by "We have several animals in our life, but the animal we take in has only us for his life" motto and I'm happy that this cat found his lifetime support.
oh my god, this is such a gorgeous little cat with a heartbreaking story. I am so glad the right person found him and the story had a happy end :)
You ROCK! You are the kind of Veterinarian we cat people dream of! This little guy is adorable and it is the "special" ones that are truly SPECIAL! I tend toward the runts of the litter, they are the best and seem to have a greater appreciation of everything! Great Job! Cheers!
Such a precious baby... He deserved so much better. I’m glad he’s in a good home! Give him many snuggles!
I'm seeing a blue cloudy spot in his eyes... not sure if it's maybe just the camera reflection? But if it isn't, it could be an ocular ulcer or cataracts... Keep an eye on the teeny honey. :)
look who's talking. hiding behind a screen trying to troll. this cat has a better life than you will ever have. its funny to hear someone try to put down a cat yet the cat is show more progress than a looser online that has to go to every post, wasting his life on here just to try and get noticed.
