Choosing Beggar Insults Glasses Shop Owner By Leaving A 1-Star Review After Receiving Free Glasses, He Tells His Side Of The Story
Imagine that you own a business. You’re trying to build a relationship with the local community and to bring in more clients—so you offer some free products and services. Everyone should be happy, right? Wrong! Someone takes everything that you give them, then has the audacity to blame you for their own decisions, and then leaves a scathing review on the internet.
That’s exactly what happened to one company that sells glasses. After somebody who got 2 pairs of free glasses and a free eye exam left a 1-star review and complained, the owner of the company couldn’t take it anymore and called them out for being ungrateful.
There’s just no pleasing some people. Scroll down to read exactly what the dissatisfied and nitpicky customer said and how the store owner clapped back.
A business was giving back to the community by providing free glasses and eye exams. However, not everyone was happy with what they got…

The optical store has been in business for more than 35 years and the owner, Dave, said that he won’t let this negative interaction stop him from “giving back to the community.” Now that’s a businessman with a heart of gold, wouldn’t you say, Pandas?
The story went viral after Reddit user Forthe_loveof_grapes posted screenshots of the review and the response on the Choosing Beggars subreddit, an online community that’s 1.9 million people strong and is dedicated to calling out thoroughly ungrateful people.
The redditor’s post got more than 28.7k upvotes and even received a Bravo Grande! Award. The commenters overwhelmingly supported Dave, the business owner, poked fun at the customer. What’s more, redditors pitched in by making other comparisons to show just how ludicrous the customer sounds.
Though we don’t currently know the name of the company or the unhappy reviewer, our team of Detective Pandas is doing its best to uncover this info so that we can reach out to them and get both sides of the story. So stay tuned, Dear Readers!
This is how internet users reacted when they saw the 1-star review
Usually they'll ask if they are for driving or for reading so I find this hard to believe but even if they didn't what stopped this person from asking for help? They will have had someone help them fit the glasses, measure pupillary distance and so forth. Down to them to say what the glasses are for and ask for advice. When I've had to go on my own I've always found staff very willing to help even with what suits my face but I asked for help. I expained what I wanted my glasses for - are opticians expected to have a list of things you might need them for and to check them off one by one? Be reasonable!!
I wonder how this worked. Could anyone just walk in and ask for free glasses? Or are they referred from some sort of welfare agency? In which case, for all the customer knew, the welfare agency was paying for the glasses and he should get the same service as any other customer. Even if you are giving someone something for free, it would still be common sense to me to make sure they got the right something. Otherwise it's just a waste. Not saying the guy should have complained online, but even someone getting stuff for free (presumably because they're in need) should be treated like a proper customer.

lol I was wondering who else caught that. after that im like yeah......ok this is comedy!
Load More Replies...I think many people have missed the point. It was a FREE and there's an unwritten rule that you don't bite the hand the feeds you. Actually I just wrote it so it's not unwritten. I can't help it - that was a very short-sighted review!
That's what my family calls a groaner! Haha #dadjokes 🤪
Load More Replies...I own a small business and this happened to me once- the review was so bad (and funny) that we made tshirts of it!! So thanks to the lady would was hateful and ungrateful- she made us a lot of money
Man, I wish I could get free exam and glasses! Even 1 pair costs me a few hundred dollars.
I have absolutely horrible vision and can't trust my judgement on how frames look... so I take my husband with me to help. He knows my needs and likes and if they don't work I can blame him (lol). It is not the shops responsibility to "know" your needs and tell you what to get.
I can't see jack without my glasses, and always had to rely on other people's opinions of what new frames looked like. But now? Praise be to smart phones! I just take selfies and even videos of each pair I try then switch to my current glasses to watch them back! I have much more confidence in my choices now, and don't have that nervous two week wait to find out if I've spent £300+ on something I look terrible in and cannot return!
Load More Replies...As a person who has been working in retail optical for over a decade this does not surprise me. I once had a man who complained repeatedly about a scratch on his lens outside of warranty, so much so we ended replacing them because he "couldn't see" through them, but when his new glasses came he was irate he couldn't keep both pairs. I told him it's an exchange/remake, we have to take the original pair. He was adamant that he wanted to keep them, these glasses that he couldn't use because he "couldn't see" with them. When I went to adjust his glasses he told my employee that he always does this and she should too because sometimes they'll let you keep "free" items. After complaining for days to get new lenses, and then complaining for at least an hour that he couldn't keep his horrible original lenses. People can be genuinely horrible sometimes.
I also had a woman accuse me of stealing a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses from her. She brought in some Serengeti sunglasses and wanted new lenses, I told her they wouldn't be branded or be the exact same color but we could try it. When they came back in she said that she had given me a different pair of glasses. I went and put the original lenses back in the frame and showed her these were hers, the original lenses had her prescription too. They matched the frame, they were her glasses. I told her we wouldn't have accepted the Maui Jim frames because our lab wouldn't make lenses for them, and we didn't even sell Serengeti frames. Only person I've ever had that got that crazy about it. She actually came back with 2 other people just to yell at me, they didn't leave until eventually I broke and started crying because there was only so much yelling I could take. They didn't stop when I started crying though, they kept going for a bit, because that's how you handle things evidently.

It is not the store's responsibility to make sure that you get the type of glasses that you need. You are supposed to know your eyeglass needs. For example, I know that I am nearsighted and need my glasses for every use. I wear my glasses for everything, therefore, I need glasses for everything. If you need help picking out glasses you can ask an associate for help. You can't expect the employees to know that you need help. Also it's wrong to leave a bad review for free services.
Seems like they're getting paid (or more glasses) by America's Best to post the bad review.
And how small a frame did they choose that they have no peripheral vision at all? Are they wearing toddler glasses?

I am a freeloader and I expect everyone to do my bidding. Wah. Wah. Wah. 😩
This is like when someone complains about not being told the refund policy, or whether checks are accepted or if these pants make their butt look big before they check out. The customer does have some responsibility for their own satisfaction with their purchase!
this idiot chose a pair of frames that were, I quote, "BLINDING"... and did he know it at the time?
I agree that comments typed ALL CAPS reflect a nutcase. Glad "Dave" explained the situation and hope in the local market he identifies the ingrate.
As an eyeglass wearer of almost 60 years with a very strong prescription, I can absolutely attest to how important good service can be, both before and after the glasses are ordered. If my lenses are too large, they look like the bottoms of a couple Coke bottles. If my new glasses aren't properly fitted by an optician, I may never be able to get them bent into a comfortable fit, especially if the frames are hollow or titanium. And whether my new glasses look great or ridiculous, I'm gonna be stuck with them on my face for the next 2-5 years. Kudos to the optical house for the giveaway, but I might respectfully suggest that there's a lot more involved with a pair of glasses than lenses and a frame.
Did he leave the store without lenses in these frames? Curious how everything was free. If it was through their insurance, that shouldn't matter to the store.
They weren't screaming at you tho, but the poor opticians.

I don't have a mum - many people don't. No family either nearby or that I'd trust with the task. My partner has questionable taste... so I rely on the staff in the shop. So far, so good. I can only tell when the lenses are actually in my glasses and by then it's a bit too late! The point is though that this person has a voice and could have used it to actually ask for some help.

Load More Replies...It isn't honest or particularly intelligent of them though. Someone will have made sure the lenses were marked up correctly for pupillary distance so there was a person involved that they could have asked for advice. I will volunteer information based on what I need my glasses for and if driving is a need it is down to me to think of that and ask for advice. It isn't up to the optician to think of all the things you might want glasses for! Wide arms on glasses obviously block peripheral vision. You can see that the moment you put them on. My partner needs a few types of glasses as he drives, does close work and needs a different pair for watching tv but HE raises the needs he has with the optician. People need to take responsibility for their own choices and this person chose not to ask for help.
