Judging others—it’s something that we all do, all the time. Whether we’re aware of it or entirely subconsciously, we’re constantly evaluating and interpreting the world around us. Making comments about people and situations in our heads. Checking how the world conforms to how we imagine it should be like. And frowning upon anyone who litters!
After being prompted to open up by redditor u/supercoliofy, internet users began sharing the things that make them silently judge people. Taking a deep dive into their comments is enlightening: we’ve judged people for similar things; we’ve done some of the things in this list that deserve judgment.

Bored Panda reached out to Lee Chambers, a Psychologist and Wellbeing Consultant, to talk about why we judge other people, as well as what role this plays in our lives.
"Judging others is something that we as humans do, both consciously and automatically, and there are a number of reasons why we do it. Comically, we are often told as children not to judge others and have stories shared about how judging others can mean we upset them or lose opportunities to see what really lies behind our perception," he told Bored Panda. I immediately judge you if you make fun of someone who's trying. I saw someone make fun of an overweight classmate despite the fact that he was doing diets, running, and exercising. He's putting an effort and you have no right to s**t on him.
Psychologist Lee, the founder of Essentialise Workplace Wellbeing and PhenomGames, revealed to Bored Panda some of the reasons why we judge other people.
"Sometimes, we judge others to feel superior ourselves, finding faults in others, highlighting them, and feeling better about ourselves in the process. Sometimes, we use it to work out where we fit in, recognizing how we want to be, where our aspirations lie, and how we don't want to become," he said.
"Sometimes, it's in response to our own flaws, and we attack others for what we don't like or don't see into ourselves. And on other occasions, it's to fit into a wider group who judge something or someone, and we conform and perform with the same judgment."
People who have no awareness of their surroundings when they're out in public.
It doesn't cost anything to wait your turn in a queue, hold a door open for someone, turn on your indicators 10 seconds earlier than you just did, or not block off the entire pavement because you want to hold hands with your husband / wife.
It's so selfish. Drives me mad just thinking about it.

According to Lee, being judgmental can be good and it "does have some benefits when used mindfully," however.
"It can help us to set goals, find alignment with our values, it can help us to build the self-awareness of others and it can boost our self-esteem," he told Bored Panda.
"Add to that it can also help us to make positive social choices, and it's understanding how and why we judge that gives us the ability to use it for our benefits instead of escaping our flaws or pulling others down."

Far from everyone makes errors with malicious intent. Quite often, people aren’t even aware that they’re making a mistake. Or they might not think that something that elicits judgment (like parking wrong or being late to meet someone all the friggin’ time) is actually that big of a deal. It’s selfishness and we’ve all got that, just in varying amounts.
We know that being self-aware of our own flaws is difficult. For one, nobody likes thinking that they’re less than perfect. Besides, we don’t have the luxury of seeing our behavior from a different perspective. That’s why it’s important to speak up if you see someone constantly making the same mistakes.
When they have no knowledge of the topic but is still arguing to the person who actually has the knowledge. I mean seriously if you dont know what you're talking about then stfu
People who talk really loud on the phone in quiet public places.
If you don’t hear any criticism about what you do, then it’s only natural to assume you’re ‘perfect’ and ‘flawless.’ If there’s no feedback, how can we expect someone to learn? Overly selfish people don’t change their ways at the drop of a hat. It takes a series of moments of clarity to get them to think that maybe—just maybe—they might need to rethink some things. However, some individuals find it hard to get past the embarrassment that comes from realizing they’ve been making mistakes.
"We spend a lot of time and effort presenting an ideal version of ourselves to other people. When something happens that contrasts with the image we’ve been projecting—when we say or do something that shows we actually aren’t as graceful or as smart as we’d like people to believe—we feel embarrassed," Vanessa Bohns from Cornell University explained to Bored Panda.
People walking toward you that don't put equal effort into avoiding collision. I'll move a bit, but you should do the same. You expect me to walk around you?
This! One time, 3 people were walking towards me side by side, taking up the entire pavement. I would have had to walk in the busy road to avoid them. They did not move over one inch. I just stopped in the pavement and looked at them. They also stopped in front of me until it got awkward and they grew enough social awareness to apologise... 😑

Not using a turn signal when driving. It's not that hard, and it's pretty arrogant not to use one

Saw a old, spoiled lady getting her bad character out on a approx. 20 y.o. waiter, because he didn't get the 6 wine glasses at the same filling level on first try. From then on, she always watched him and shook her head and said things like "i would be shamed soo much if i were him". Next morning (it was in a hotel) i overheard from her family that she got a stomach bug and diarrhea and can't make it to breakfast. Well deserved

People who bring children to situations that are not appropriate for children.
Mmm.... define 'appropriate' for children. The picture suggests an office. I don't judge for this. People don't want to bring their kids to offices and the like. If they do it's usually because they don't have any other option and they are doing the best they can with what they have. Bars and genuine inappropriate places and times are a different story.
Even worse are the people who play their music through their speakers on a trail. You're outside its gorgeous there are birds and s**t. Turn off you god damn music you're ruining it for the rest of us.
Finally: "I judge people who complain about politics, but choose not to vote
Unless you can't legally vote. In my country, we have lots of people disenfranchised from voting, often for very petty reasons. If you're politically active and engaged in other ways, I figure you've earned your right to complain -- even if you can't vote.
"Think about how you can reach out and do things for others, help a neighbor or volunteer for a cause, we get happiness high from helping other people. Or start small and simply list three things that you can be grateful for each night before bed. Take it slow and be kind to yourself,” she suggested how people can learn to open up to new experiences and helping others.

I work at a Starbucks in a grocery store and I have two regulars with scrawny, super scraggly kids and they spend $7-$10 on one or two drinks while they yell at their kid for wanting a 75 cent doughnut.

Yes. I know that your first instinct is going to be to hit downvote, but please try to read my whole comment and think about it before reflexively acting. I'm seriously losing faith in the sanity of the comments section recently. People need to get this knee-jerk judgemental reaction under control. Large breed dogs are being neutered at way too young an age, and this leads to a lot of problems throughout their lives. These range from growth-plate deformities and long bone abnormalities to long-term behavioural issues. Responsible owners are perfectly capable of preventing pregnancies in their animals wihout having to resort to invasive surgery.
I agree, and also - if you are getting a dog, you are responsible for research on all info there is. Starting from feeding - ending with spaying. But judging owners just by knowing that their pet is not fixed is stupid. There could be many reasons, and that just plain ignorance.

There could be reasons for now spaying. Breeding, competitive training, or health reasons too. Just judging by one fact that they are not spayed tells me that that person is ignorant. While I do prefer my pets to be fixed, still there are many things to be considered.

When I adopted my labradoodle, the number one stipulation was that I get her spaying appointment set within two weeks of taking her home. It was in the adoption contract that if I failed to do so, the family I was adopting her from would remove her from my home with no chance of getting her back. All of my dogs and cats are spayed/neutered. It's the only responsible thing to do.
We have an appt next week for the puppy we just got. Be a responsible pet owner, or don't have pets!!
Your "puppy" should be AT LEAST 1-2 years old before neutering and have gone through their first season. Sex hormones do WAY more than just help reproduction

Ok, so, seriously, see no reason in just neuter animals for the sake of it (and it is illegal here to do so without a solid medical reason like a tumour or similar). Neither dogs nor cats should just roam around freely. That's the owners responsibility. Keep your dog on a f*cking leash if you can't train it to stay with you or at least come back at command if unleashed. Keep your cat indoors - and yes, cats can live happy and fullfilled lives indoors - and tell your darn Guinea pig to be home at 8 pm latest - no issue arises. Having a surgical or chemical procedure performed on a perfectly healthy animal for no other reason but your own inability to adequately train or control them is just not okay.
There are many documented medical reasons to spay female dogs and cats, not just birth control.

We had a neighbor who's cat kept getting pregnant (poor baby!!) and I offered to and paid for getting her fixed...it was just so awful. I couldn't take it anymore,
Years ago I took in a pregnant stray. Somebody probably dumped her when she started showing - after neglecting to have her spayed. How irresponsible can you get? Fortunately she and all the babies got good forever homes (I kept the mom).

Just waiting for my little girl kitten to be old enough. She's not quite the right age or weight and since she's an indoor cat with every other cat in the house spayed/neutered, she's low risk. But as soon as she's able, we're going to the vet.
You can ask your vet about hormonal implant until she is the right age and weight if you are afraid to do surgery now. But as you said - probably low risk situation.

and the number of people (mainly men) who don't get their male dogs fixed because they want to show off the size of their balls >< so stupid. if you aren't breeding your pets (responsibly) and there isn't a medical reason you can't get it done, your pet should be fixed. it's better long term for their health and behaviour.
Neutering/spaying too early can have serious side effects, especially in large breed dogs. + every responsible pet owner can prevent unwanted pregnancies other ways. Also it seems it's only the US that has this strong propaganda of spay/neuter has zero side effects. In Europe there's countries where it's literally illegal to spay/neuter without a medical reason, because it's based on actual research. Think with your heads, if you need over a year of consultations and exams to get yourself snipped (male and female), it's obviously not that harmless. Also keep in mind that in cats and dogs, they usually don't just snip them, they take out the entire thing, meaning they take out the organs responsible for most of the hormone creation that is vital for the animal's health and growth. Not to mention that many people screaming about spaying/neutering everything, don't bother to microchip their pets, which is harmless, cheap and takes less than 2 minutes at the vet.
We can't get ours spayed. She has a very serious heart defect and having her spayed could kill her. I feel like I have to explain that to everyone though because we get seriously judged for not having her spayed.
Had the same situation and we used hormonal implant (already mentioned it in a few placea because not a lot of people knows about this solution). That may be a solution for your pet.

Commun cat person who has more pets that he / she can handle and leaves them to poop all arround the neighborhood.
This is something that makes me mad. They even brought in a new law here in Sweden stating that if your cat has outdoor privileges then they need to be spayed/neutered. People ignore that and say things like, they aren't allowed outside but their kid opened the door and they got out. Same people year after year selling kittens after an oopsie pregnancy. I know it's expensive to spay/neuter, almost $170 for a female and $120 for a male but if you can't afford it there are pet charities that pay for it. Every year people let their cats out and then the charities have to find homes for thousands of feral cats. It's absolutely awful
What needs to be done is offer neutering/spaying free. Vet bills are way too expensive as it is. Please don't gouge loving pet owners who want to do the right thing. And for those who will comment that there are programs out there that do help reduce the cost; however, even if you try to be a good samaritan and bring in a feral cat or dog that you have no plan on keeping, you are still charged money to have that animal fixed, even at nonprofits. That further prompts people to not want to spay/neuter stray animals which are the largest source of producing more unwanted/neglected animals.
With my old cat our vet advised us to give her a pill to suppress her heat instead of operation. She almost died from the resulting uterine inflammation. Now my partner and I have a cat we got in the local flea market where the people who can't be bothered to neuter their outdoor cats bring their unwanted pups and kittens. She's and indoor cat but was neutered after her first heat and now she's more calm and content. She also doesn't have to face a bunch of health issues and likely to have a longer life. Around us there are an immense amount of feral and semi-feral cats who just roam around while in theory having owners. They are kept so that those coming to their allotments in the weekend would have a cute little pet to cuddle but during the week they have to fend for themselves. In the springtime all the females start getting rounder and all the males start getting bloodier as they fight each other. And all of them come to our big glass front door to peer in with sad eyes.
We took in one of them last spring, already pregnant. Nursed and rehomed her kittens, then had her neutered and now she's and indoor cat as well, slowly getting over the trauma the pregnancy had on her. She was an incredibly friendly and nice cat before, after giving birth she got really fearful and prone to hiding. But we'll love her back to her old self. And now another beautiful little cat is coming to our door every night, sitting there, looking at the inside cats being all comfy and cared for. I can't take in another one. And my heart is breaking. Every spring/summer Sunday when we go to that flea market I see the long-long row of people standing there with their pet carriers full of innocent little kittens and pups, some of their faces I already recognise from last year when they were standing there with the previous litter.

This is so important, I think that it should be the law to have pets spayed/neutered unless the animal is going to a licensed breeder who is capable of looking after the animals whilst dealing with their sexual health. I knew a couple that had a small dog that they were going to breed but because they didn’t like dealing with the mess of the dogs period they then had her spayed which to me was unnecessary strain on the dog due to her age,

Letting your cats outside. I dislike finding dead songbirds and chipmunks in my yard, and I also dislike finding the remains of your cat after the foxes and coyotes are through with it.
All my cats are spayed/ neutered. Neither of my dogs is. I have 1 retired all white stud and his special needs son (german shepherds). My dogs are NEVER off leash and are with me and my husband 24/7. Judge me all you want I am not putting my dogs under for surgery that is not a necessity when I have the time, space and training needed to keep my dogs from breeding. I can not control my cats from occasionally sneaking out the door while I'm moving things around or cleaning out my house but I can with my dogs. If he wasn't special needs (brain damaged from traumatic birth) the son would be neutered. The risks outweigh the benefits for him. He is never more than a few feet from me and is scared of other dogs besides his father. But please judge me while your dog is rummaging through your neighbors trash because your dog walker left the door open.... Downvotes here I come 🤣🤣🤣
YES. there are way to many stray/feral pets to justify not fixing your pet. no, you shouldn't let them have a litter to 'let them experience the joys of being a parent' the animal doesn't care about being a parent. If you decide you don't want something, give it to the checkout clerk so it can be returned to the right place. Especially do not leave raw meat just sitting around. Also, people who "donate" so-long-past-expiry-that-it's-not-safe food and other unusable items to the Food Bank. I am going to say something that will probably be controversial. I am seriously judgmental of people who have fertility treatments in order to have children. It costs tens of thousands of dollars for the process, and if your insurance is paying for it that means that everyone else's insurance costs are going up. And this is not about wanting children or a family. There are thousands and thousands of orphans of all ages, colors, nationalities, etc. Out there starving for a home. No. Fertility treatments are about one thing: passing on your precious genes. Making sure your own magical combination of DNA goes on for one more generation. And I think it is an egotistical waste of economic and medical resources.
I don't care if it's controversial, as l agree. And it really bothers me that they talk about parenthood when they mean pregnancy. Two entirely different things

Homelessness is a massive problem here and it's sometimes frustrating to deal with. Most of these I wouldn't silently judge...I'd loudly judge. One thing I do silently judge is when people from other countries come here and don't pay attention to laws or safety things, like street signs. I live in an area with a lot of immigration and, I understand yoou may not know the language yet, but pay attention to the behavior of people around you until you figure out certain things. We have people riding their bikes on highways in the area which is against the law and dangerous. A lot of people on bikes with no shirts or shoes on freeways, a lot of uninsured people... We also had a lot of people who work jobs with equipment they aren't licensed to handle because it was cheaper for the contractors to hire undocumented peoples. It's dangerous for them and for others. The worst offense I see is in dating profiles, with "follow me" instead of a description, a sure sign of no personality. The dumbest are probably the flashy cars with a social media window sticker, since there are so many cases of cars being stolen because of the details posted on the person's account.
I hate people that proudly announce every chance they get, how smart their kids are, however, they think that kids cannot understand good behavior and never teach them manners or consequences, because "kids are too young to know or to be taught better" I've worked with kids of all ages for 30 years, and let me tell you; Kids know, and they're manipulating you, because they know they can get away with everything around their parents, why do you think they behave differently and better with other adults like teachers, nannies, parents of other children etc. Another adult or caretaker wouldn't discipline your kids, but the kids don't know this so they behave well

People who claim to be medically exempt from wearing masks and then actually wear a mask with no problems when you tell them your work doesn't allow mask exemptions. My work doesn't allow exemptions for several reasons, and we are within our right to do so, and I have yet to have someone who claims medical exemption leave. They always take a mask and shockingly, actually have zero issues. There are fully valid reasons why someone can't wear a mask, but if you really had a reason you can't wear one, you would leave instead of taking a mask and wearing it. And so yes, I judge people who fake or exaggerate conditions because they don't want to follow rules in a pandemic because they just make it harder on the people who genuinely have real medical conditions.

Welfare requires info from both biological parents, and they evaluate your support arrangements if you aren't sharing a household to determine if it meets their income guidelines. If the other parent isn't contributing voluntarily, they hunt down that parent, verify DNA and enforce a support agreement based on their income (& not their actual financial situation which may not actually afford the amount they determine). Then the state will award Medicaid/CHIP, SNAP, WIC, Section 8, none of which is cash. Welfare reform of 90s changed the programs to require contribution from both parents.

I am going to say something that will probably be controversial. I am seriously judgmental of people who have fertility treatments in order to have children. It costs tens of thousands of dollars for the process, and if your insurance is paying for it that means that everyone else's insurance costs are going up. And this is not about wanting children or a family. There are thousands and thousands of orphans of all ages, colors, nationalities, etc. Out there starving for a home. No. Fertility treatments are about one thing: passing on your precious genes. Making sure your own magical combination of DNA goes on for one more generation. And I think it is an egotistical waste of economic and medical resources.
I don't care if it's controversial, as l agree. And it really bothers me that they talk about parenthood when they mean pregnancy. Two entirely different things

Homelessness is a massive problem here and it's sometimes frustrating to deal with. But if you can see a confused, elderly, mentally ill person living in a cardboard box under a freeway overpass, and instead of feeling empathy you just complain that they're blocking the sidewalk... there's something wrong with you.

One thing I do silently judge is when people from other countries come here and don't pay attention to laws or safety things, like street signs. I live in an area with a lot of immigration and, I understand yoou may not know the language yet, but pay attention to the behavior of people around you until you figure out certain things. We have people riding their bikes on highways in the area which is against the law and dangerous. A lot of people on bikes with no shirts or shoes on freeways, a lot of uninsured people... We also had a lot of people who work jobs with equipment they aren't licensed to handle because it was cheaper for the contractors to hire undocumented peoples. It's dangerous for them and for others.
