5 Anxiety Vs. Reality Comics That Show How Social Anxiety Screws Up Your Perception Of The World

Jacob Andrews is the creative genius behind For Lack of a Better Comic, who now works as comic artist for CollegeHumor. His comics cover all kinds of topics, from the objectively best and worst feelings in the world, to romantic expectations and sleeping with your partner, Jacob has got you covered with a witty and sometimes dark take on things.

This time he has tackled a subject that many people can relate to, anxiety. Not the intense, heart-pounding terror that wakes you in the night and leaves you convinced that you are about to die kind of anxiety, but a milder form of social anxiety that leaves you feeling like you suck and the whole world is secretly laughing at you. We all feel a bit inadequate at times, and Jacob manages to capture feelings that will make many people nod knowingly, while highlighting how absurd and painful the condition can be.

Scroll down to check out the comics for yourself, as well as some reactions to them. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!

"I don't have anxiety and this seems silly." Well, excuse us for being silly all over your internet. Years after I recognised my own social anxiety I still struggle with it, but I am now conscious about it which helps. I remember that a friend once said that he had no qualms in public because people don't pay any attenmtion to you, you just think that they do, and he proved it by asking me what I remembered about any person I'd casually passed 5 seconds ago. It was an 'aha!' moment, and I move through public situations now knowing that I have a cloak of invisibility around me, with a 5-10 second delay at most. It really helps to disappear all the people that I don't want to be there.

A large part of my social anxiety is that I think everyone is as judgey as I am.

That's actually one of the first steps in an anxiety self help book I read once......practice being less judgmental toward others because the more you judge, the more you assume others do, too. Not sure if the book worked or not. I didn't finish it.....because I also have commitment issues. Sigh. ;)

They forgot parties. My worst nightmare- lots of strangers or near strangers and a lot of noise. If I get through without a panic attack and/or a severe migraine, it's a miracle. Walking down the street doesn't usually trigger my anxiety- I live in the city. People go out of their way to pretend not to notice each other.

I have depression and anxiety my entire life. Yes it sucks and yes it can be hard but I'm so tired of people trying to play the victim. Suck it up learn to deal with it find your coping mechanisms and move on. Everyone has issues, EVERYONE!

If you don't have anxiety of some kind, you are probably faking it. It comes with the turf of humanity.

No, I have no anxiety at all. Seeing these comics depict anxiety and how many people seem to relate really puzzles me. It must be terrible to have.

Whenever that thing starts to creep up on me..especially walking down the street and in the gym. I usually just shake myself and think, well, who cares? I don't know those people. They can watch all they like, at least they see something nice ;)

In the anxiety version of going to the gym, is the pink-haired person on the left supposed to be a massive lady body builder? If so, does anyone think there is srsly a common occurrence of men being anxious that at the gym they will be mocked by massive women body builders? I mean srsly? Has anyone ever heard of a dude saying that? Female body builders are awesome btw, most would either be supportive of anyone in the gym, or just be focused on doing their own thing. Most dude bodybuilders too.

Massive or non massive, having a few muscles, or just a strong and healthy looking body is enough to put a person prone to anxiety into panic mode because anxiety is irrational. No matter how much they KNOW it's in their head, the feeling is hard to get rid of.
