The Inside Of The Leaning Tower Of Pisa Is Empty
This is shocking, yes, but also tricky: what we're seeing here is the inner shaft of the Tower, around which the spiral staircase is wrapped. Since the Tower is actually a Belltower, it's logical that the inner shaft would be hollow. The monks were never supposed to climb all the way up just to ring the bells.
This is one reason I actually LIKE the comment section, occasionally someone has a fun tidbit of info I didn't know...
Load More Replies...This is the inner schacht. The tower was not only built as a bell tower but also as a secret hideout for the clergy. In case of danger the schacht could be easily "filled" with wooden floors. That's what the little black stones at the wall (one can see here very good) are for...
I didn't knew that, and makes perfect sense. A wooden structure to support the flooring and a wooden stair would be easy and quick to place, true.
Load More Replies...Here you got, a cross-section of the Tower: issue26bur...5e2561.jpg
Load More Replies...Not really, that light comes from the outside, from the observation platform on the topmost level and the clearings where the bell is located.
Load More Replies...So Interesting. I always thought there were a bunch of little rooms in there!
Now this utterly surprises me! I had never thought to wonder, just assumed it was an actual tower- with steps and such..
Explains why it leans...*L*...They left out the support structure when they built it.
I thought it had stair in it. I recall hearing my aunt talk about how people used to be able to go up inside it but they had to stop since it leaned to much. Did they remove the stairs?
Keep reading the comments, Mont, here we explain where this hollow space and the stairs are.
Load More Replies...How the hell did Galileo climb up SO high? Did they have fireladders back them? 😄
So basically you are telling me that there is no real reason for this tower to exist other than it's falling over and cost a ton of money to keep it from falling completely over.
Uhm, no. The Tower was built with a practical reason in mind, here at the Comments we have explained once and again what its purpose was. The Tower is no longer falling over, it could have been restored upright, but since it's a landmark and one very profitable tourist attraction, it has been kept tilted.
Load More Replies...So not only it is crooked, it is also empty. I wonder what was actually architect´s intention.
Uhm, no. This hollow space is INSIDE the spiral staircase.
Load More Replies...well this makes no sense. https://www.google.com/search?q=inside+of+the+leaning+tower+of+pisa&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiNl7uzr_PYAhWEzFMKHbsLDGkQ_AUICigB&biw=2133&bih=1098
As already discussed here, the interior of the Tower is not actually empty, just the central shaft inside the staircase.

So Apparently A 9 Volt Battery Is 6 AAA Batteries Taped Together
They're not AAA batteries. They're AAA A cells. A cell is individual and a battery is a group of cells so yes, it's not exactly surprising that a battery has cells since that's what it's made up of.

He is totally dehydrated, first of all. No fluids in his skin, so all you see are veins and arteries. The coloration is first, natural skin on the thighs (covered by shorts), highly sunburned skin on around the knees, and an obvious line where his socks cover his feet. And, yes, he needs massage and fluids every day to be able to start the next day.

It didn't 'change the way I see the world'. Can we stop with these c**p titles? They're really not necessary.
How about trying not to take everything so literally? It gives us a view of the world we probably haven't seen, which is basically the same thing.
Load More Replies...These are great. Some people say they hate the behind-the-scenes pictures of Disneyland because they ruin the magic, but for me seeing the brilliance that goes into creating the illusions makes it even more magical. The same goes for all of these pictures.
I have seen a lot of these before., but the ones I didn't have seen yet were really worth the trip. Great entry!

I think Mt. Everest gets higher every year due to all the absolute garbage piled at the summit (and along the way, I understand). It's just so dangerous, no clean-up crew is going to casually climb the place to pick up all that litter.
Every team should be required to pack out everything they pack in. I never leave anything behind.
Load More Replies...I liked the photo that showed a heated floor before the "hard floory stuff" is laid down!
IMHO I would have liked to have seen the pictures, THEN click to reveal what they are. More of a guessing game that way.
These are soo interesting! I love learning how things work and what they look like "behind the scenes"

Well it didn't really " change the way I see my world " but there were some pretty cool photos.
The 9 volt battery has 6 "AAAA" (quadruple A's) in it, not "AAA" (triple A's). And another battery that has this kind of construction is a A23 battery, there are 8 394 button cell battery's inside.
Nice to see Hull City Centre (Yorkshire UK) in #22.The blade was an art installation using an actual blade from the recently built Seimens factory on the river Humber.
15 is photoshopped. That's a 30-40 ton pylon, no way a helicopter can lift that.
