Photographer Captures Extremely Rare White Baby Reindeer While Hiking In Norway (6 Pics)

Like something out of a whimsical Christmas tale, an extremely rare white baby deer was recently spotted in Oslo, Norway by wildlife photography enthusiast Mads Nordsveen and the photos are enchanting.

The 24-year-old said: “I was walking in the mountains looking for nice landscapes for my travel photography when out of nowhere I saw this adorable animal.” While the wintery background almost entirely camouflaged the cute deer, the photographer said it made no attempt to hide and even ‘posed’ for some pictures.

But Nordsveen got more than pictures from experience: “He came very close to me, and we looked at each other straight in the eyes,” he recalled, “After some minutes the mother of the white deer came out of trees just behind. It walked around for some minutes before running back to its mother. It was very magical and a fairy tale moment.”

White reindeer have an uncommon genetic mutation that strips their fur of pigment to allow them to blend into their snowy surroundings. Unlike albinos, they still have dark pigmentation in their eyes and antlers.

It’s not the first time this photographer/ explorer got lucky to meet wild animals in person. He also got to meet a Lynx and wolves, both also in Northern Norway.

The poor little beast just looks surprised to even exist - "what is all this white stuff... why am I white fluff?"

Wonderful photographs. Snow the way I love it, in pictures not in my yard! The first baby picture melted my heart, "WHO are YOU?" Then the way it just settled down and posed for the rest of the session. So cute and wild at the same time.

Yes, this is a baby. They grow antlers, they look like small sticks just like in the picture. They shed antlers every year, and the older they get, the bigger the antlers they will grow each year. There are wild reindeer in Norway, though most reindeer, especially north of Oslo, aren't. Hardangervidda has a huge population of wild reindeer. In sami language, we call the white ones klovse, they are weaker than the coloured ones and don't survive that well in the wild. Often, they are deaf, and don't hear when the herd is moving on, so you can sometimes find them sleeping alone somewhere in the mountains. In Sami mythology, they say they belong to the underground people, and if you find an unmarked white one, you can throw a knife or something silver over them, then they'll belong to you.

Ehh, white its not specially rare, about 20% of reindeers are white (and that ones not albino either) Northersn reindeers are not wild, they are breed and herd every year in end of summer to be marked (and selected ones slaughtered), and in livestock white is not rarer than others... their beutifull thought

Would someone who knows please explain what is going on here? How could anyone get so close to wild animals? Is this some kind of animal reserve? These don't appear to be telephoto lens pictures. What am I missing?

If your still and patient, it's not uncommon for an animal to get close enough to take a picture of you. Once had a black bear stumple up a creek into my campsite. I thought it was hilarious because he kinda stopped there, looked at me, blinked. stared some, blinked some more, stared some more and shuffled off. Doggo was six months at the time and froze. After the bear left, she gave me this look like 'well, that just happened.'

Who ever write this article.... This is adult, 1-2 years old atleast, babys doesent have antlers. Probably female hence characters. And white is not rare color, 20% population is white and its "wanted" color little bit like in horses. Reindeers are not wild animals, they are livestock what is keeped free and gathered ones a year. This one have ear-cutted, every farmer have their own cut what tells wich animal are theirs, so absolutely not wild mountain reindeer (wich also look different)

that's pretty much the way the world has always been. Although, today, there may be people hanging out to shoot/huntdown any of the jackasses.

Wow! From what I've read, they're extremely rare. No one knows how many there are though, as they're (obviously) hard to spot.

Really beautiful photos. But I'd rather advice him to stay off wild animals. If they stop fearing humans it can get very dangerous for them. Not to say it's dangerous for the photographer too.
