40 years ago my mom, who was left handed, was forced to write with the right hand while the left was tied to the chair/table (at school). Today she writes with the right, but kinda bent and smears ink all over the paper too.

I favour only my left for writing and typing. I prefer doing anything else with my right. Try writing with sharpie on a laminated surface.

IT's all in the method. I am left-handed and I use fountain pens. The secret for me is to hold my hand below the line and rest the nib on the line. No smudges in over 50 years.

This is often perpetuated as a "left-hand struggle", but I beg to differ. If you have an A4 page (heck, even A5) worth of handwriting, as long as you hold your writing tool in a way you're leaning your hand against the paper, the dirty hand is going to happen even when you're writing with your right, and your writing system is horizontal + left to right. Same happens with drawing (pencil on paper). It's a dirty job.

Just a basic dutch elementary school. Teachers wanted to make me righthanded too. With some pretty awful methods (rulers on knuckles or just plain tying left hand down). This was less than 40 years ago. My grandfather went ballistic and gave the headmaster an earful. They let me use my left hand. I wonder if that percentage would be very different if those practices had never happened.

Wasn't just the Catholic schools. In the 1950's and -60's teachers all over were made to treat lefties as 'wrong'. I never did learn to write so anyone could read it.

Why's it cool to be left handed ?

When I learned calligraphy in school, I was told to try to begin each letter almost in the reverse of how you would normally write with a pen and work your way back to the beginning of the letter. We were using the older metal calligraphy nibs on dip pens. The calligraphy markers today change everything for us lefties. The teacher could only suggest-not teach it. I was the first left-handed student of hers to do it. She had no idea how to show me.

Tilt the paper. My notebook is at an almost 90 degree angle clockwise and I write slightly downward. This way you don't smudge either. I have pretty decent handwriting.
