Usually, when you read a history article or story, it's mostly just dry facts and your imagination. But an amazing photo gives something a bit different. It shows you how it all actually looked, letting you understand the historical moment more intimately. Whether it would be a historical landmark, a famous person or random old pictures of the past - they all have fascinating stories behind them, and we're just about to show you.
The brave photojournalists that took these interesting pictures saw the morbidity of wars, documented the creation of an atomic bomb and shot stills of most magnificent constructions being built. You might not be aware that the city of Tel-Aviv used to be just plain dunes or how someone looks after literally falling from space. Keep on scrolling to take a look at Bored Panda's list of rare historical photos that might shine a new light on how you saw these crucial moments.

Load More Replies...From artistic point of view I think this is the most powerful image.
August Landmesser is the man in the picture. ♥ http://rarehistoricalphotos.com/lone-man-refusing-nazi-salute-1936/
There is one another man on the photo who doesn't salute. Let's see if you can find him!
He may have been just scratching his balls when the photographer shot this image.
There were actually 2 people refusing the Nazi Salute if you look more closely at the back. But otherwise this is sad representative of what we believed in back then.
There seem to be other near the back of the crowd also not joining in?
I would of been that guy...the only one with a brain, heart and a conscience! This was such an abominable part of history. :'(
If you look behind him to the left another isn't doing it either. It looks like he has his arm behind the man to his right and that man, while still giving the salute, is turned towards him. Probably telling him to get his arm up.
Most probably he was promptly denounced and joined others in a concentration camp. Or he was executed.
The lowest guy in white just to the right of the middle looks like Marlon Brando
There's another one back right wearing a white shirt and braces who doesn't appear to be saluting too.
And yet, when someone refuses to do the pledge of allegiance they get torn down by those around them.
The photo was taken in Hamburg in 1936, during the celebrations for the launch of a ship. In the crowed, one person refuses to raise his arm to give the Nazi salute. The man was August Landmesser. He had already been in trouble with the authorities, having been sentenced to two years hard labour for marrying a Jewish woman. We know little else about August Landmesser, except that he had two children. By pure chance, one of his children recognized her father in this photo when it was published in a German newspaper in 1991. How proud she must have been in that moment.
there is a bunch more if I'm not mistaken, for example the guy just a little left of the centre four rows up from the bottom, looking at the camera. The guy next to him waving to the camera. Also the guy two guys to the left of the guy waving, he's also looking at the camera..
Its like Michelle Obama, she doesn't cover her heart when they have important American happenings!
the guy wearing suspenders in the upper right corner is also not saluting
I guess you're talking about the people who imposed to everybody else to do the salute, right? Because that's indeed terrible behaviour.
Load More Replies...This man Was punished for this and Sent to a Consentration camp, And later died there i belive.
If his name and story is well-known (August Landmesser) then why is it not indicated? It is such lazy-a*s journalism...
I belive this man to be the captain of the bismark during ww2. He was apparently the only man that didn't salute hitler as he belived in his duty to the navy but not to the nazis. And he wasn't excited because he was a damn good captain even though hitler resented him for not saluting him. Unfortunately his name escapes me at this moment but if you look it up you will find it

Great collection of images that reflect human history. The good and the bad.
Most of these photos just prove we've done terrible things as humankind and never learn from any historical archive depicting so. :( Still, wonderful to learn so much from visuals of another era.
Nah. The very fact that you found the cruel ones troubling proves that we DID learn and are indeed improving. Maybe slowly, but certainly.
