I live in SC. You see these a lot down here (obviously) but more often than not it’s just viewed as a “southern thing” like sweet tea and grits. I feel that down here the people who wear and sport the confederate flag have largely serrated it from its origin. It doesn’t excuse the ignorance but I agree that anyone above the Mason-Dixon Line is sporting it as a statement.

I come from a small town in the south, and most people who have the Confederate Flag flying from their porch or truck are simply uneducated. They only thing they see it as is anti-government and their reasoning behind that can be a little confusing/non-existent. A lot of people use it out of ignorance, others do so just because they think it looks neat. People are dumb, and this proves that not all people who fly the flag live by its creators' ideals.

The Nazis took over a religious symbol and tainted it. Any group of ignorant people can do this. The point of this post is that don't be a judgmental person because of what you see. Let their actions dictate how to react. Judging just keeps the hate going.

It was ALWAYS in some way racist. It was the flag of the people who fought a war largely to keep their slaves.

South of the Mason Dixon too, seems this gentleman is one of the few who don't wear it to declare hatred.

I like the Confederate flag. As a native of Alabama it has always symbolized my place of birth. It never seemed to be a symbol of racism. Only to those looking for it.

Don't judge a book by its cover.

Clearly that wasn't the case here - so why take a moment of kindness and taint it?

Interesting, I'm from Southern Ohio...and although that does happen occasionally throughout the United States, it is DEFINITELY not a common occurrence whatsoever. In fact, most people in Ohio are incredibly tolerant/welcoming of other races

While I agree with that, it is also a symbol of heritage for many. This guy helped another guy because he isn't racist. It's sad we have to judge him because of his t shirt and tatoo. He is obviously a man who is NOT racist.

Blue Cicada Ive lived in southern Ohio for 20 years and have not one time heard folks DECLARE that they are racist or any other bigotry’s! How dare you put us all in a box like you did.

My dad's family is from the Southern Arkansas/Northern Louisiana Bayou. I saw plenty of them embracing the confederate flag, and I never saw one of them ever exhibit meanness to a "person of color" (as they said with respect). I saw my aunts feed some homeless men they knew by name, both white and black, out their back doors - the door that opened into the kitchen, because you don't carry a plate of food across a light-colored living room carpet. Sometimes the men ate at the back door, and sometimes they carried their everyday china plate and drink (sweet iced tea or lemonade in an everyday glass, or coffee in an everyday china coffee mug) to the front porch and sat on the porch swing to eat, depending on how hot it was, then brought their dirty plates back to the back door. Southern Confederate culture is complicated. Sometimes it's about racial hatred, and that's real. And sometimes it's about personal Christianity, and that's also real.

To me we should only fly ONE flag in this Country and that is the American flag. One Country, one flag, united under God!

I passed a couple places in the country in NW Arkansas this past weekend. You kindof get the drift of peoples feelings when in all you see in a 1/4 mile stretch is confederate flags.

Not always so. Our heritage is from the south and we fly the flag for pride of ancestry nor because of race. Its misinformation like yours that keep racism going.

Yes, we know. A lot of folks north of the Mason-Dixon line have given themselves passage to decide what is and isn't hatred for everyone else.

I had to enlighten a lady at my church about this and her son's pickup truck. She tried to tell me there was no way her son meant this display on his truck as racist. The following week she came to me and apologized. She had no idea. It is alive and well in Southern Ohio.
