Racist Woman Attacks Two People For Speaking Spanish In Grocery Store, Gets What She Deserves

A woman allegedly harassed two people for speaking Spanish in a Colorado grocery store, making the customers lose faith in humanity. One of them, however, confronted her in an attempt to restore it.

As of this article, the footage of the event has been viewed more than 1M times since it was posted to Facebook. It shows Kamira Trent shouting down Linda Dwire in a store in Rifle. As Trent and Dwire walk away from the person recording them, a store employee is seen following the two women.

Eventually, Trent called the police and the officers arrested Dwire, taking her to Garfield County Jail, and charging her with two counts of bias-motivated harassment. She was released on bond and is due back in court in November.

The conflict began when Dwire overheard two women speaking in Spanish to each other and interrupted them to ask if the women lived in the US and whether they liked it. After they said yes to both questions, Dwire told them to learn English.

One of the women who has been in the US for eight years and was accompanied at the market by her three children told BuzzFeed News that Dwire was aggressive and kept putting her hand in her face.

Trent was shopping nearby and overheard Dwire saying, “You’re in America. You’re in my country. You can’t speak Spanish here. You need to speak English if you’re going to be in America.” Trent claimed she wanted to de-escalate the situation, reminding Dwire it was a free country and that she couldn’t tell the other women how to speak. “She just got angrier and angrier. I was trying to get her away from the two women, but she wasn’t going to leave them alone,” Trent said. “What she said and the way she said it was wrong.”

But their exchange heated up and about 10 minutes later Trent called the police. The arresting officer, Carlos Cornejo, wrote that when he arrived, he heard Dwire yelling “something to the effect of ‘this is what is wrong with our country’ and ‘they should not be speaking Spanish here.'”

Dwire told the officer she was exercising her right to freedom of speech and that she found it offensive the two women were speaking Spanish because they “didn’t have the respect to speak English.”

“It has nothing to do with race. It’s a patriotic thing,” Dwire told BuzzFeed News. “When people come to my country, they need to love it enough to speak English.” She claims that she confronted people in public places about not speaking English before and believes US immigration laws should stipulate that immigrants learn English.

She added that she has received threats since the incident went viral and isn’t sure if she’ll be able to find an attorney to take up her case. Meanwhile, the internet has quickly identified Trent as a “shero,” thanking her for stepping in to defend the women.

Recently, Linda Dwire allegedly harassed two Mexican women in a grocery store for speaking Spanish

But Kamira Trent confronted her and wasn’t willing to let the bullying slide

As the conflict continued, Trent called the police

Some of it was caught on tape, too

People are taking the time to personally thank Trent for standing up for the women

And many can’t understand the harasser at all

Surely she should only be speaking English if she is in England? That woman is appropriating my culture and as an English person in England, with my English tongue in my English cheek I object! She needs to brush up on her culture and learn to speak her proper Native American language, and make sure it is taught in her local school too. Here in the tiny UK Welsh children learn Welsh at school....

As some Natives already pointed out, the woman who accused them has no say in this, as long as she doesn't speak any of the real American languages. Remember, Eng-land → Engl-ish. Given the history, and the fact so many USA cities and places still carry Spanish names, they had the right to speak Spanish THE SAME as she had the right to speak English.

Two Ladies are talking to each other in a language that another lady couldn' t understand - that happens every day to me. I live in eastern France near the border where the older generation speaks a german dialect, immigrants from Italy, Turkey, Algeria and so on speak their native language and when people with different backgrounds talk to each other, they use French.

This is ridiculous - the Italians "discovered" America -then the Spanish and French along with the English colonised it. Along with huge numbers of African people brought agaist their will. Then you have the Irish Gaelic immigrants escaping from the famine in the 1800's. Then the massive immigrations from Europe in the early 20th century - All languages, all entitled to speak their own. The only true language of America is Native Indian dialects, which I am sure this woman would also take offence at

I worked for a customer service phone line for an American company. I had a man call in angry because this company had a store in Mexico and when he went in no one spoke English. I explained that the store was in Mexico for Mexican customers. "But it is an American company", he replied. "They should speak English." I asked him if he is living in Mexico why didn't he learn the language. He got angry and hung up.

People tend to forget history. Why were there Italian, German, Irish etc neighborhoods in many of our major cities? Because immigrants coming over flocked to places where people were like them and spoke their language. Anyone who has ever tried to learn a new language as an adult knows it is not impossible, but it is difficult. So first generation immigrants tend to speak their native tongue....it is their children that learn English. So now, instead of German, Italian, etc, it is Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, etc that we see and hear. So unless your ancestors emmigrated here from England, they did not speak English when they first came to America.

I am an expat living in Mexico. In trying to learn the language, I found that the Mexican people were kind and helpful, and never laughed at me. Oddly enough, it was other American expats who ridiculed and laughed at me to my face when I made a mistake in Spanish. I still don't understand why that is; when Mexicans told me my pronunciation was perfect. If someone is making an effort, I applaud them. Regarding this situation...no native Mexican has ever called me out for speaking in English to another fellow American here in Mexico. There's simply no reason for such bigotry, here or anywhere else.

Nancy, the Americans that ridicule you are uncomfortable about their own shortcomings, past or present. Don't let their attitude bring you down. My experience has been that Mexicans are proud of their language; they want to HELP others speak it correctly, and not judge them for doing it wrong!

Funniest part of this story is not the assumption by large part of USA population that being the official language means that English should be the only spoken and "foreign" languages tolerated only as secondary when not directly looked down to. Letting aside the fact that great portions of that land that today occupies USA were actually under Spanish rule and that Spanish was widely spoken and many of your cities today have a Spanish name , there are some other dozens local languages that existed prior the arrival or English and are not even considered co-official. Have you ever even adopted any of their words?. In Mexico there are still places where Nahuatl is still spoken. In fact, we, Spaniards, have adopted some words from Nahuatl in our vocabulary, like "chicle" (chewing gum). Greetings from the cradle of one of the most beautiful languages.

Well here we have three languages to learn Filipino, Regional Dialects and English. We can also learn other since almost all of us wants to go to abroad. We know English but don't expect us to converse fluently since it's not our main language we just have to study it because it's part of schools curriculum and more formal in the modern society but it doesn't mean we force tourist to speak our language since that will make restrictions and awkwardness.

It shows that behaving like an arsehole is not confined to men.... there is a lot of praise for being female and (correctly) standing up for the two Spanish speakers, but no condemnation of a female being an ugly racist.

It is polite and curteous to speak the common labguage of the group you are conversing with, but apart from that, all bets are off and you speak any labguage you want. Does this woman speak navaho?apachee? (Did i get that right? If not, please forgive me, but you know what i mean) - If not, she's just as guilty of the offense she's accusing them of, not speaking "the native language", and she should just do what she told them - stfu...

This happens one day and another in Catalonia, but the opposite. Some Spanish nazi people attack Catalan people talking in Catalan in Catalonia. And, by the way, just after doing it, they say they are worried about how Spanish is treated in USA. :(

That's totally inaccurate. What happens in Catalonia is exactly the opposite. You are selling Catalans to the world as victims while there is not real foundation for it. Catalonia is part of a democratic frame, with its perks and its failures, but not a totalitarian state as it is sold to the world. Catalonia's government is ruled by nationalists that look down on the rest of Spaniards (including the ones living in Catalonia) and promote harassing of people speaking Spanish. It is a well known pathetic strategy of the elite of Catalonia to cover up the corruption there are sunk in. Nobody in my circle of friends, familiy and community has ever uttered a word against people from Catalonia. All the contrary, we have always praised them and considered them as part of our community. But perhaps that has to do with the fact that we do not have a broadcasting media that spills poison about others. Another fact?, the majority of people living in Catalonia love and want to be part of Spain. Maybe they have been brainwashed together the other 85% of the Spanish population, right?. Go sell your fake tears somewhere else.

The argument is absurd(as everyone's already pointed out) - you're free to speak whatever language you like with your friends/family etc, picking on a random like this is just looking for a scandal. However, and this might be unpopular here I guess, I do firmly believe that if you LIVE in the country, then yes, you should learn its language(I can't comment on these women - it'd appear though that they at least knew enough English to understand that woman's questions and all though). There's no excuse(or perhaps very few excuses such as legit mental disorders etc) for living in a country for years upon years, giving birth to kids in it, and still not speaking its language. That's simply rude and disrespectful to everyone you run into on a daily basis and then have to communicate via gestures or something. With your family, friends, whatever, you can speak whatever, but if you came here to be part of this society, then do everyone(including yourself) a favor and learn its language.

Jennifer Marcotte (Commenter deriding America) is that name French? Apparently Ms. Marcotte has never been to Quebec. If you don't speak French, good luck communicating with others who speak English but refuse to. Back in the 1970s as a young man, I went to Quebec with some English speaking friends. One evening we decided to check out the night life and went to, what appeared to be, a lively but respectable might club/bar. I was first in the door and was greeted by the doorman/bouncer/host in French. Fluent in French, I responded in kind. After several words of conversation in French, I spoke a few lines in English to my friends. The conversation ended abruptly, and we were told there was no more room inside, and that we should leave. Americans are not the only ones to resent foreign languages. Such resentment is popular in Canada too. Quebec is no different than France, the only country outside of Canada where not speaking French will end many conversations. racist-spa...524abd.jpg racist-spanish-speaking-women-kamira-trent-city-market-grocery-store-rifle-5bb9486524abd.jpg

Oddly enough, it was other American expats who ridiculed and laughed at me to my face when I made a mistake in Spanish. I still don't understand why that is; when Mexicans told me my pronunciation was perfect. If someone is making an effort, I applaud them.

We should embrace other languages. To me, being in a place where multiple languages are spoken is like listening to the beautiful music of human existence. I feel sorry for those who view it as a threat. What a sad life they are trying to lead!! So closed and frightened!!

Guess what, lady. English is the most common language in the U.S. but it isn't the official language. There isn't an official language although some states have made English their official language.

Just adding, for the sake of interest only -- they were all in Colorado, which happens to be a Spanish translation of "colour", I think. There must be a connection there, but I`m Canadian and don`t know that particular story (yet!)

If she is living in USA shouldn't she be using one of the Native American languages? Shows real disrespect not to use the languages of the Native inhabitants.

Stand strong. There are people in the world who accepting, and are willing to give other's freedom in speech. And other people are just down right b*tches, because they get anxious about people talking trash about them in a different language. Well guess what? Some people are nicer than they let on, and just because you're self conscious about you reputation, DOES NOT mean that you can harass people like that. Be like the kind lady, and defend those are can't speak for themselves. Honestly, what has this world come to?

marcosalonso avatar
