Cello Teacher Receives Racist ‘Thank You’ E-mail From Student’s Mom, Responds By Explaining The Reason Behind ‘Ethnic Stench’

Interview With Expert
ADVERTISEMENT

Everyone deserves to be treated with basic human dignity. It doesn’t matter where you come from, respect should be repaid with respect, and kindness with kindness. Unfortunately, some people have a habit of making insensitive offhand comments that greatly insult others.

Take this one example where a mother wrote a letter to her son’s cello teacher in which she mentioned an “ethnic stench” coming off of his clothes every time he came back home after a lesson.

Well, the teacher was very insulted. She wasn’t afraid to write back to the mother and explain that she was, in fact, ‘ethnic’ and that what the mother said was ‘racist.’ But not only that. The cello teacher then went on to comment about how the child was neglected at home. Read on for the full story.

A story about a cello teacher getting an insulting letter from a student’s mother went viral online

Here’s what the teacher’s response was

The story went viral on the internet. For example, when it was posted on the ‘Insane Parents‘ subreddit, it got more than 49,000 upvotes in less than a day. Meanwhile, the original post on Twitter made by user @sxinxm_ was retweeted over 63,400 times and got more than 281,100 likes on the social media platform.

The tweets started a fiery discussion on the internet. Not only were people talking about racism in the 21st century, but they were also analyzing the topic of child neglect. According to @sxinxm_, the cello student’s parents weren’t feeding him enough. So she reported them to social services.

However, some Twitter users said she made a mistake by mentioning the child’s malnutrition in her email to his mother. According to them, now the parents will be able to cover up their mistake before social services contacts them.

“Don’t be a bystander”

Bored Panda talked to social media influencer Zariya Grant from New Jersey about the entire story and wanted to hear her thoughts about racism in the 21st century. According to Zariya, her first reaction upon reading the mother’s email to the teacher was disgust: “I was kind of disgusted by it. She tried to “sandwich” those remarks between compliments.”

Zariya was also angry that the mother wasn’t feeding the 9-year-old boy “so he could lose weight.”

“As a person of color, I deal with racism quite a lot. Whether it be “sly” remarks or stereotypes, it’s something I and many others deal with.”

“There’s not much advice I can give on how to respond to it besides don’t be a bystander if you see it happening and be strong. Every situation is different. If there’s something that bothers you, say or do something,” Zariya said.

“Don’t be afraid of who you are. Whatever your race or ethnicity, that’s what makes you “you.” Show people how strong you are and find your voice. Little changes can help big problems” the influencer exclaimed. “Racism is an uncomfortable subject for everyone and shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you don’t see the issue with little remarks or big gestures, you’re part of the problem.”

The politics of smell

Masako Fukui from Japan, who has had experience with being made fun of for the smell of the food she eats, writes on ABC News that “it’s virtually impossible to control our immediate responses to pungent odors, and the anatomy of our brains helps to explain this.”

“Other senses are largely processed within the neocortex, the ‘higher’ brain, while the sensory recognition of odors is more thoroughly plumbed into the limbic system, a collection of ‘lower’ brain regions that are critical for emotion and memory.”

“Whatever is tickling the nose hairs has a direct line to the sub-verbal, animalistic self. It’s exactly the amorphous nature of smell that makes it so powerful, and political,” Fukui writes. “For when those odors that repel us are associated with race, the disgust we instinctively sense undermines our attempts to overcome racial prejudices.”

Some people were outraged at the mom’s letter, while others supported the teacher for helping the child

"Ethnic stench"? Smelling Indian in public? Is there actually a human being left on earth that thinks it's okay to say that?

I read a book one time of a little white girl that was living with her father and mother in Vietnam. She encountered a little local boy riding a water buffalo. She looked at him and said he smelled of cabbage and rice. He replied that she smelled of beef and butter. Then he offered her a ride on the water buffalo. She accepted and they became good friends. Everyone emits smells that can be a result of their ethnicity, their living situation,...etc. It doesn't make them less or more human than the next person. And after having been in a few East Indian restaurants, I'd love for my kid to smell like that. Maybe everyone will think I know how to cook...lol.

Exactly. This is what so many people fail to understand. EVERYBODY has their own certain scents. We ourselves don't notice it, due to olfactory fatigue; our nose has become so used to it that our brain automatically filters it out so that we can notice new and unusual scents. It's why people douse themselves in perfume, because they can't smell it anymore; meanwhile, everyone around them is getting headaches because the smell is so strong! Scents that we're more used to being around go unnoticed, while different and 'ethnic' scents are much more noticeable. Every living being stinks in their own unique way, haha.

Ok I'm not exactly a fan of the smell of Indian food (it is a sensory overload thing with me). But calling it an "ethnic stench" is beyond unacceptable. Also forcing a kid to skip meals is the worst way to go about controlling their weight it's called preparing healthy meals and teaching fitness

Now it looks like cello teacher really doesn't speak to the parents much and 9 year olds aren't the most reliable sources for that information. My kids can look at me like I'm planning on killing them if I forget making popcorn instantly after it was demanded. No but serious, teacher and mom are prejudiced idiots.

Uhm, is nobody else going to comment on the instructor also being racist? Sure, we can ALL agree that the mother of that child needs reported to social services AND was racist....and not even subtle about it. But the instructor stated FROM THE START: "White people are so subtly racist." which in itself is a racist comment. THAT PARENT is so racist, and I disagree with the word subtly. But the race of that parent was a moot point, where the instructor made it racist when she made it a point.

The statement "white people are so subtly racist" is ... racist. This is a story about one individual who made comments that were taken as insults by another individual. As long as we continue to qualify our language with a reference to race, racism will continue to exist.

That mom was all sorts of out of line, but to start off a rant about someone being racist by being racist yourself and thinking that's ok is really messed up. "White people are so racist". The OP has just labeled all white people as racist, which is beyond ironic in a post about racism. Racism by/directed at ANY race is unacceptable. Just because someone doing it is white does not make it ok for you to make racist remarks about them. If the mom was black and the poster had said, "Black people are so racist" it would have gone very poorly for her.

I agree that the ethnic stench comment is way out of order, but also, she's being racist as well, saying that "white people is racists", effectively putting all white people under the same tag. Start looking at you self before pointing other's racisms :)

I was living in an apartment some years ago and there was an Indian family that lived below us. The delightful aromas of their dinner would always drift up to our apartment. That Mother's email was atrocious and the teachers response brilliant, but what happens for the kid now? I'm worried that this child has lost an ally. 9 is so young to fight for yourself and social service intervention does not always help. Not to mention the obvious connection this teacher and student have with music! I'm concerned that such an ignorant mother will simply disallow her child from continuing rather than apologize and learn. where does that leave the child?

The good news from this, if there can be any; is that the son will grow up with a different mindset from that of his mother. So many kids are ruined by the racist, bigoted belief systems of their parents and it can take years or even a generation to actualize harmonious thinking. I applaud the teacher and find all cultures interesting.

"not an issue" "a mindless thought" - The mother is obviously so clueless she fails to see that her 'mindless thought' - IS really the issue. White-skin privilege blinds many to the work necessary for a sane and inclusive culture. I find it sad that the mother clearly has a hard time accepting her son "as is" - no surprise she is unaccepting of aspects of other cultures.

I've told my mother in law an outrageously racist office story once and she went like "whats wrong about that?" I tried to explain it to her by flipping the story the other way round, so it would insult her/ white people and she was mad, of course. But it was different from the original story in her opinion, meaning: when she is insulted its not ok, if its someone else, there is no problem.

Nope! But it sure makes for a great barn burner! Or perhaps an opportunity to paint all white people with a very broad brush. Ex. the overt comment from the poster and the subsequent covert ones about spices in the responses followed up shortly with a stab at making it political here. Because, you know, all Republicans are racist AND white. Huff post told me so. 🙄

Just curious, irrespective of the disgraceful message from the mother (always assuming that the dubious story is true!), as to the weight of the child. If they were obese, as too many are these days, feeding them would not be wise at all, even if they said they were hungry.

I think this racism has gone a bit too far. The mother obviously dislikes the smell of the food, she is ignorant, thoughtless and many other rude things in using the wording she did, but does this make her racist? NO. If she was she would never have sent her son there in the first place, everyone can not jump on the racism band wagon quick enough these days can they?

Both have committed racism. The parent's email was horrible and absolutely unacceptable. The parent obviously does not communicate with her child as one would think the meals would have been mentioned at some point. The teacher's response is no worse. Clearly, there was a lack of restraint, respect & professionalism when it was decided to share this private conversation with the world. Shame on you both for not being adults and role models to our youths.

It is a bit bittersweet for me hearing that she will call child services. It will teach the parent a lesson, but every bad thing that happens to the parent happens to the kid. If he doesn’t end up in foster care, he’ll likely take on the same stresses of his parents. If he’s like any other 9year old, He feels everything other people feel, even if that person doesn’t always care about them

Poor kid, if the cello teacher had concerns about his home life then she should have reported it to social services as soon as she became aware of them, not in retaliation for an insult. If the kid does live in an abusive home, by informing the parents that he has confided in his teacher she has potentially made his home life worse.

The belief that non-whites, and blacks in particular, inherently smell bad, was quite common until ca. 1950. I have an anti-racist book from around 1940 whicn quotes an angry letter to a movie theatre owner. The writer of the letter claimed that when the lights went on in the intermission and he saw he was sitting next to a black man, he was "overcome by the stench". "His sense of smell" - adds the anti-racist book dryly - "was obviously not working in the dark".

Perhaps, "strong exotic scent" would have conveyed the message without being offense, but some people aren't very articulate. There is one particular set of people called Gipsies who have natural stench no matter if they bathe regularly or not and no matter what they eat. They always smell awful, like grease that has been on sun for weeks. I am not racist, but I can't stand a smell of a Gipsy, no one can, every single person says they reek and they don't like their life style. I have honestly never smelt anything from any of my colleagues - always a mix of ethnicities. Clothes will sometimes smell of cooking if the whole house ends up smelling of cooking. That can be anyone though. A friend would fry things a lot and her clothes sometimes smelt of fried food... wasn't spicy just a fried fat smell. She didn't have a good extractor fan or open windows when cooking though. So, that hasn't been my experience of Indian people ever.

Well, I hope what I'm going to say is going to serve as some sort of consolation for you. It's the ethnic majorities that are subtly and often involuntary racist, not specifically "white people". (Who are these so called "white people" anyway...?) And, more than anything ---> just because we have a few idiots like this one here, it doesn't make the whole population racist.

'ethnic stench' I don't think this is racist at all, I think people are way too sensitive and can't admit that we've all thought this at some point 😂
