Americans have long been exporting their pop culture to the world. With TV shows and movies being among the most consumed global American exports, it's no surprise that US actors and directors are recognized all around the globe. However, for all of us non-Americans out there, sometimes the silver screens get us all dazed and confused. Do American people really drink from those red plastic cups at parties? Do they really wear shoes inside their houses? Is homecoming really such a big thing as movies make it out to be?

But we're gonna need a true expert's opinion on the matter—our Bored Panda readers living in the US! So scroll down below to read all the questions that people had about the things they saw on TV and feel free to share your answers!

Living in a college town I can attest that yes they do. It's all anyone talks about, and the traffic jams are awful. High school football here is just as bad.

When my relatives from Ireland come to visit, they love to play with the garbage disposal. Even the people in their 60's think it is hilarious. They refer to it as "the murder sink".

Why the down votes for people explaining what a disposal is used for? Are people really that petty? I DONT like that explanation ima be a bloody little prick and down vote the comment.

KatHat

It's supposed to help keep drains from blocking but people use it as an extra trash can which is EXTREMELY problematic. They put all kinds of things down the drain that should go in the trash.

Garbage disposals are not blenders. They are used to shred and dispose of soft matter like vegetable greens, fruit peels, etc., instead of putting them in the garbage. One advantage is they won't rot and smell bad. Personally I throw mine on the compost heap, but few people have room for those.

Cip IESAN

Because these garbage disposals are great in horror flicks!

Here in Canada we call them Garborators. They're nice if you accidentally drop something down there and then you can use it to unclog the drain, but they aren't meant to be used as trash cans.

mph seti

I think they are a good idea. You can just grind up and wash down most vegetable matter. Sure, composting would be ideal, but you can't do that in an apartment.

Katri

Why not? I do it. Dont you have trash cans outside your building for different type of waste? Like biodegradable, glass, metal, paper, cardboard etc?

Lol garbage disposal? It enables our laziness, means e can throw pieces of food down the sink instead of having to take a few more steps to the trash.

Garbage disposals are illegal in Austria. They attract rats and overexert sewage plants.

I’ve come across them in the U.K. too. My aunt had one in the late 60s and in the 90s i came across an estate of council flat with garbage disposals. Not all of them worked and it was difficult to get them mended. When the estate was modernised they were removed

"Sink blenders" or garbage disposals are a 80's and 90's thing. Most places if improving a house or apartment rip them out now. They just end up clogging pipes because people think they can get rid of bodies in them.

They do always seem to have the disposals on tv. I've never lived in a house or apartment that had one though.

It's not a blender, it's a garbage disposal which chops up everything going down the drain when it's on so that pipes don't get clogged.

I'm not a fan of garbage disposals but I don't understand why this is weird. What is weird is how so much of the world don't put their poo-covered toilet paper in the toilet.

Amanda Rudnicki

Because we are required by law to waste 30% of everything we buy from the store. Especially veggies and fruit. Have you ever tried stuffing whole veggies down the drain without a sink blender?

I'm British and my grandparents had a garbage disposal in their kitchen sink (it's the only place I've seen one irl). It terrified the living crap out of me every single time. My Nan was brilliant at dropping her rings down there and we would have to endure horror-movie tension as they were fished out. Sometimes tea spoons would get accidentally washed down and we'd only realise when you switched it on and the screeching of shredding metal started.

I'm in the UK and we've had a waste disposal in our sink for 30 years. Use it daily and would not be without it. We only put soft, cooked, food scraps down, with plenty of water. Never had a problem, and it stops our garbage from smelling. We don't know anyone else that has one here though.

Lolabean

UK here... my dad had one installed when he built his new house but I rarely (actually don't think I've ever) see him use it. Especially cos the dogs tend to get a lot of the scraps with their kibble! I wouldn't even know how to turn it on, but the nightmare still exists that it would eat my hand. The hole to it is huge! My aunt had one too, she used to take her wedding ring off to wash up and lost it down there one day (fell off the window sill). They got it back but I remember being a nervous wreck that someone would lose a hand.

The purpose of the garbage disposal is to keep food waste out of the garbage cans. This helps to keep away rats, raccoons and other vermin. It also keeps the trash from fermenting and stinking in hot weather.

Wouldn't you want to put less down them then? In the UK emptying a septic tank is costly and unpleasant to be around.

We usually have a funeral at the mortuary or a church then we go to the cemetery where the chairs are set up for a few last words by a minister or priest. Only the close family sit and the rest stand.
