You've probably heard this joke a million times when the quarantine began: there's going to be a baby boom by the end of the year. Some laughed while nodding their heads and others thought it was impossible for couples to bring a new life into the world after seeing each other all day every day with no end in sight. But families are expanding. And creative parents-to-be are coming up with the funniest ways to announce their big news.

From saying they got the wrong kind of protection to little kids claiming their parents weren't good at social-distancing, its evident that some didn't lose their sense of humor during times of such great uncertainty.

According to Dr. Melissa Richards, an OBGYN at Olmsted County Medical Center, the hospital is expected to hit 1,000 births in 2020, which is something OMC hasn't done in more than five years.

That being said, she believes the "boom" won't be as drastic as some predict. "I wouldn't call it a boom, but maybe a bump," Dr. Richards told KTTC. "In 2019, we had 58 deliveries in December," Dr. Richards said. "This year, we are tracking to deliver 80 patients."

Lyman Stone, a research fellow at the Institute for Family Studies, pointed out that “events that cause a large increase in deaths tend to cause a large decrease in births nine months later.” Which is the complete opposite of the popular belief that a major natural disaster would inspire Americans sensing their own mortality to grow their families.

The researcher cited natural disasters such as hurricanes and famines, as well as previous pandemics to support the claim, saying that would-be parents may be traumatized by fear or concerned about how they would care for children during difficult and uncertain times. Still, such declines are often temporary.

Me: "Why am I the only one who isn't going to be a parent after quarantine?" Voice in my head: "Because you're single, you hate kids, and 50% of your time in lockdown has been given over to Animal Crossing." Me: "I got all the fossils, so it was totally worth it."

Please correct me if I'm wrong but if this baby is 24 weeks old it was conceived well before most countries went into quarantine (Reading July 3). Even if you include China which went into lockdown February 4th. Not to lessen the joy of their announcement.

Agreed. Some of these are not "quarantine" conceived babies. But they will be born in the time of corona.

Some women do this type of weekly photo thing which compares the size of the fetus to a common household item (ex: At 24 weeks the baby is the size of a roll of toilet paper or at 30 weeks the baby is the size of a watermelon). Thank don’t think she was claiming to have gotten pregnant during COVID, just think she used it as a cute photo opportunity.

Personally, I would not want to be compared to a roll of toilet paper.

No, but its a play on the whole, my bab is the size of an orange... which actually makes less sense because oranges are all different sizes.

Many pregnant moms do this kind of weekly picture thing comparing the size of the fetus to common items (Ex: At 24 weeks the baby is the size of a roll of toilet paper or at 30 weeks-size of a small watermelon). She isn’t claiming to have gotten pregnant during COVID, she was just using what was going on in the world and made it into a cute pregnancy photo opportunity.

The baby is probably safest inside. The parents may want to extend the pregnancy beyond the usual 40 weeks depending on how bad the outbreak is when she's due. The reference to toilet paper is apropos. I hope that the shortages ease by the time she gets to the 3rd trimester and baby starts using mom's bladder as a trampoline.

It isn't usually up to the mother how long the pregnancy lasts. If the baby is determined it's time, it's time.

So as cute as these are.. it’s not as if couples in the same household are expected to socially distance...?

Is this a pregnancy announcement, or just a photo of baby wear that will tell everyone why said baby now exists?
