25 Inhumane, Greedy Landlords Who Revealed Their True Colors During The Pandemic
Some landlords want their tenants to pay rent come hell or high water. Instead of showing empathy, these jerk landlords are demanding that people use their savings and stimulus checks to pay rent or even move out during the coronavirus pandemic. A few have even resorted to threats despite tenants losing their jobs, their income, or having nowhere else to go. A staggering 22 million Americans have filed for unemployment this past month and the situation might get worse.
To show you just how bad things can get, Bored Panda has collected some of the most horrifying stories about nightmare landlords. Scroll down and let us know in the comments what your landlords are like during the pandemic, dear Pandas.
Bored Panda talked about the dynamic between landlords and tenants during the pandemic with Joshua Browder, the CEO of DoNotPay—the world’s first robot lawyer. Read on for our interview with Josh and for some handy advice on what to do if your landlord is pressuring you.

The Landlord vs. The Tenant
Sure. Let’s Punish The Kids For Trying To Have Fun During Quarantine. That’ll Show ‘Em
Apparently Landlords Aren’t Above The Law
“Landlords are straining their relationship because they are desperate. Across the world, there are laws in place that prevent evictions and allow tenants to get an extension on their rent. DoNotPay.com helps tenants get these extensions. As a result, landlords are using extraordinary tactics, including even checking a tenant's tax refund with the IRS, to get a payment,” Josh explained what the current situation is like in the US.
We were interested to know what tenants should do if they feel pressured by their landlords to pay up during quarantine (or else…).
“Ignore the pressure,” Josh advised. “There is nothing the landlord can do and they are best by not responding. If the landlord keeps messaging or visiting the tenant, then they should document these actions and may even have the basis for a harassment claim.”

I Hate My Landlords. Right Now, In The Middle Of A Pandemic, They Happen To Decide It's Time To Raise Our Rent. Absolutely Unbelievable
03/17/2020
BRISTOL ***** APARTMENTS
Dear ****** and all others,
At Bristol, white it is not our policy to automatically raise rates on current residents every year, we unfortunately are forced to examine current income with rising expenses in order to maintain the same exceptional level of service that includes maintenance, adequate staffing and improvements to your community. While, rent increases are truly our least favorite part of this business, various voter and state/city approved measures and bills have increased the cost of housing. Some of those include the following:
-Clean Energy Sales Tax on consumers
-City of Portland Annual $60 per Apartment Registration Tax on renters
-Additional Administration Burden of City of Portland Screening Criteria Mandate
-Additional Administration Burden of City of Portland Security Deposit Mandate
-SB 608- Statewide Rent Control capping the amount and frequency to adjust income regardless of actual expenses
Considering these initiatives and examining your current rental rate, we have made the difficult decision to increase your rent and pass on the cost. We urge you to ask our elected officials to put an end to raising the cost of housing during an unprecedented housing crisis.
um, THAT IS ILLEGAL. As far as I know, it is illegal raise rent just like this. It needs to be in advance and specify date from which it is needed to pay the raised rent otherwise it is illegal and you have no obligation to heed notice like this.
However, is there going to be a new dynamic between landlords and tenants after the pandemic is over and things go back to normal? Josh thinks so.
“Over the past two years, landlords have had the upper hand. They have treated tenants as disposable customers that they could charge incredibly high prices. In the future, not only will landlords be much more reasonable about prices, but also focus on retaining tenants by treating them with much more respect and leniency,” Josh thinks.
“For example, in the past, if a tenant was late, a landlord would almost certainly slap on a late fee. In the future, they might make an allowance, if only to keep the tenant for the longer term,” he added.
My Late Fees Are $100 Late Fee Plus $10 A Day Until Its Paid In Full. And My Landlord Wants To Mafia Style Bully People. Guess We Had A Nice Run Since Both The Husband And I Both Work In The Resturaunt Industry
Evictions are on hold in the UK - landlords are not allowed to do it. I have a landlord I work for doing some odd things and I keep having to quote the new laws to her. Tenants are allowed to stay in situ for the time being on a rolling monthly contract. Even house buyers have been told to stay put unless there really is no alternative.
They're on hold through most of the US, too. That doesn't stop these creeps from making threats.
Load More Replies...People voted for a president who gets away with proudly being a bully. This is not even close to his actual methods on the New York real estate and property scene. Don’t allow awful people to get away with being jackasses, because it just keeps getting worse. They are legally owed money, but it t is f*****g illegal to evict people during this time. Peoples’ lives matter.
They can't do this..call a lawyer. Most governments have placed rules saying no late fees, evictions or lockouts.
Depends on the type of rental you live in, in the US. If the mortgage isn't federally backed & the property isn't getting any federal funds, then yes they can charge a late fee. Some tenants are being jerks too. Their income not being impacted by the coronavirus yet they don't pay anything towards their rent.
Load More Replies...No hate, but landlords might be out of work, and they need the money for mortgage, bills, upkeep of the property.
Funny how they say that THEY can't afford it....just like everyone! Aren't banks giving them a break too? Like, from mortgage payments? Not sure
Depends on how the mortgage is financed. If it's a Sallie Mae (for example) they can have that months payment pushed back but they still have to pay it & the additional intrest it costs them. If it's not a federally backed mortgage, it's due at it's normal time. With a lot of people home all the time, the utilities that the LL has to pay increases too. There is an increase to the maintenance of the building too. Add all that together, then subtract that total from what's gotten paid by the tenants. LL probably still owes money.
Load More Replies...You should write whatever you're replying with inside a dictionary, he clearly needs it.This is why you should always read your contacts. Because you signed the lease agreement it's legally binding so your hands are tied. Unless it does not state this verbatim on the pages you signed. However it's a lengthy process to evict someone, it wouldn't be immediate, they'd have to make the request, serve you papers, have a court date (which he would not get until the epidemic is over and done with due to the fact that most courthouses are closed to anything except for emergencies and this would not classify as one) , and win for them to get you out of there. His policies don't trump law,
Eviction is a court proceeding. No judge is going to sign an eviction order and the police will not get involved without one. Ignore them.
Freedom isn't free, either. It costs $1.05, and if you don't pay it, who will?
For English, please press 1. This fella has 0 knowledge of the language he's using.
Most cities are not allowing evictions and courts are not even open in the US to file an eviction. But, the tenants should be calling there landlords if they can't pay rent for some reason and asking for an extension of some sort and explaining why and when the rent can be paid. Not story worthy.
Land lords wouldn't be able to get an eviction cleared of the courts as the courts are not doing business as usual.
Our small town in Oregon has put a stay on evictions and foreclosures (though I doubt they have the power to enforce that last one) so no one loses the roof over their heads during this crisis. It's hard to say how people will react when they're under this much pressure and stress.
lol what a nut. Sorry dude, but all evictions are currently banned. Hope the renter gave them an ear full
Such repulsive, greedy creatures. I wonder how they can live with themselves?
Right now here in the U.S. there is a law that is supposed to halt all evictions, but some a******s will still do whatever they can to try and get their money.
I haven't heard of any nationwide law like this. Are you certain?
Load More Replies...Just for info - they haven't used the word 'monies' incorrectly. Monies is the plural of money and usually used in a formal financial context.

First of all, cable service, internet, and other utilities are not offensive non-essential services. They are keeping people sane and connected through this time. Keeping people healthy and sheltered as much as possible during this time is essential to hit the ground running once this pandemic is over. A*****e landlords contribute to the demise of the broken human spirit arising from this pandemic, use their last months rent to cover. Granted there are awful tenants that destroy property and security deposits and last months rent barely covers the cost to clean and fix, but that’s another post. You need basic shelter to accomplish your best and give back to society and each other. Don’t add to our stress, don’t add to our misery, don’t take away something basic that impugns on our integrity.

Letter To Tenants
Dear Tenants,
This property is under tenant access ONLY. If you continue to have guests come onto this property, you will be given a notice to vacate. No guests are permitted to hang out, stay or wonder the property. The only access being permitted will be tenants on file in the office. ALL OTHER GUESTS MUST LEAVE IMMEDIATELY.
Another note: If you think that you don't have to pay rent, because of the pandemic, you are mistaken. We still must pay the bills to keep your apartment over your head. Anyone receiving disability or social security have no excuse to fail short on paying their rent. However, some of you believe we cannot file eviction for nonpayment of rent. This is not true. President Donald Trump has ONLY delayed housing evictions and foreclosures due to nonpayment for HUD housing and Section 8. As you are aware, we do not operate with HUD or Section 8, so you must pay your rent.
To the tenants that have been affected by the virus, please keep watch In the laundry room for postings for jobs and or assistance for rent.
If You would like to discuss with us how any of this, or the spread of the virus is our fault, please come see us in the office.
Laundry room will be closed if it is not kept clean. You must wear gloves and a mask if you want to be in the laundry facilities. If it is not kept clean, it will also shut down. Please keep track of your times to allow every tenant a vacant slot to do laundry.
If you can not abide by these rules set forth, you may want to vacate the apartment, now. We are here for the safety and well-being of all of our residents on this property and we are slowing the spread of the virus by limiting access and implementing new rules.
In the case that you need someone to bring you something; they are to bring it, drop it off and leave.

This Ultra Caring Letter From A Landlord
NOTICE TO ALL TENANTS:
I want to remind all of the tenants that there is no ban on evictions in Clay County. Rent is due on the 1st of the month and must be in my hands by the 5th of the month or postmarked by the 5th of the month. If postmarked after the 5th of the month, there will be a $100.00 late charge which must be included with that month's rent. If not received in full by the 8th I will be filing rent and possession papers in the Circuit Court. If you are short on money this month because of working shorter hours, then get or borrow money from your friends or relatives. I am not your family or your banker. Remember, if you take it to the post office in the late afternoon of the 5th, it probably won't get postmarked until the 6th, thus incurring a $100.00 late fee.

Some of these landlords are very heavy fisted. While I understand they are running a business amd also have expenses to pay, I am sure they will get leeway from their credirors, and they will not pass those benefit onto tenants. Very few people and companies have and extra 3 months salary in their accounts for situations like these. Paying for luxuries before paying your rent is not a bright move.
These landlords are indeed nasty people, but one the first rules my parents thought me was to have at least 3 months of salary on your saving account. If you can't afford to save money in your current house, please rent/buy something more modest. My first apartment was also in a shady part of town ('upcoming neighbourhood' as my estate agent would call it), but it left me with some financial air. Living from paycheck to payckeck is incredibly risky, if any crisis emerges (like now).
Load More Replies...Seems to me this is all US stuff again. You guys voted for freedom and all that s**t, because god forbid there are rules to protect people, so this is what you get. None of this happens here in 'socialist' Europe.
Obviously you missed the fact that some of these posts come from the UK.
Load More Replies...I have never ever heard of “late charges“ for rent! Is that normal in the U.S. or something illegal those landlords just pulled out of their butts?
I think it's only legal if it is in the lease that you would owe late fees. They cant just pull a number out of their a*s
Load More Replies...We once rented out a property we owned. We assumed we'd hit a patch where the house would be empty for at least 3 months (between tenants, economic glitch, etc.). So we set aside part of the rent into the "cushion" fund, against times when this stuff happens.... And we're just two shmucks. So I think these corporations are either bloody bad at business or stupid, and some of the individuals? Didn't read Landlording 101: Don't rent it to someone else if you can't afford it yourself, b/c at some point, the property will be empty, and you will have to pay.... *headdesk*...... Also, what jobs and other places are people going to FIND?!?!
In NYC that apartment would be filled same day if it became available. Cut throat for living space.
Load More Replies...In case landlors haven't realised, when this is over there won't be a line of tenants ready to pay a ridiculously high rent because many people will lose their jobs. Not the time to be greedy, but oh well...
these landlords can definitely think about how to conduct their behavior and business better, but let's not forget they have financial obligations as well - otherwise it'll be the banks that starts bullying them around. it's just the way life is. people in here need to realize nothing in life is free.
After healthcare and workers right, rent law should be the third reasons for american people to be on the streets (once it is possible again). How can any half-developed country have such ridiculous laws? In the end, this unsafety is not only bad for the tenants but for the landlords as well. No reliability for them, too, and they might also be hit hard by the crisis, particularly if they own just a few units.
Okay, thank you boredpanda, writers, and commenters to share many sides of this greed virus. We need humor and we need to see the awful side of things we would have missed. We need to think about how we are obtaining our money and where it’s going. It’s tough but at least directly and as much as possible we can choose who we support, who ends up getting more powerful and rich from others’ hard work and labor. We can’t be enabling these monsters. We need to band together and fight for each other. Universal health care, labor protections, affordable housing, and (please add more to this list). We’ve been hearing these issues for years, and now it’s in our faces and the fears are worse than we thought. Sorry, it’s a bit of a tangent. I just woke up as a person. Finally getting sleep after 8 months, and today hopefully getting back to a regular sleeping routine. I swore a lot in my comments today. I’m sorry for the offense.
You won't upset most of us Brits - we love a good swear! It's actually quite a stress release too so can be beneficial for you. Agree with everything you're saying and feel sorry that there are so few protections for the good people in the US.
Load More Replies...When I lost my job no one helped me with my mortgage payments, I didn't get any stimulus package from the government, I didn't get any mortgage discounts, no one bailed me out in any way. I sucked it up, acted Iike an adult, cut all my expenses to the max, lived on way way less, and still paid my mortgage same as always.
You are one of the few people here who takes responsibility for your own life... most here are just acting like spoiled children who think it's someone else's job to meet their needs. I wish there were more people like you, Julie BT - you will go far in life.
Load More Replies...Landlords who raise prices or threaten eviction are huge idiots. Never mind that it's illegal and abominable to do those things. They might THINK they are winning now, but eventually the pandemic will be over (and I know this isn't meaningful compensation if you are going through this right now), but the people will remember, and when they have their power back (to take these things to court, or move out and stop giving money to these monsters) the awful Scrooge's will suffer in the long run.
All of these landlords are a**holes, but I also have an opinion on the other side of the coin. A lot of families in my area rent a portion/floor of their houses because it is practically impossible to pay bills alone as a single family. They are dependent on the partial income. If the tenants are unable to pay the rent, it puts the homeowners at risk. It isn't a problem for a month or two (if you have savings), but imagine this lengths out over time? A lot of people see landowners/homeowners as a**holes, but let's be honest, these are people, too, that have to pay their mortgages and taxes every month. Some may not want to charge their tenants because they're genuine people, but sometimes they don't have a choice. Rent was a way to help them pay the bills because their income wasn't enough. If the government wants to allow people to avoid paying for rent for a specific amount of time without being evicted, they need to have something in place for landlords/owners, homeowners, etc.
Best country ever never fails to disappoint. How was that quote? You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villany. I feel deeply sorry of the intelligent and good people there.
Today in our news it was reported of people looting deliveries of care packages, and of government officials hoarding them, and selling them on. Don't get me wrong- we have a good president, but some of the population are below repulsive. Stealing food from the poor is the lowest of the low.
Load More Replies...I know I'm going to catch a lot of grief for this, but I have to say it. If you have an income the landlord should be paid. Most people would be willing to enter an agreement where you pay them back over a couple of months. Talking it out with the landlord helps. But not if you think your wine, tv or party is more important than your rent. Our landlord gave us two options. (We have been living in our apartment for 13 yrs, always pay on time and in full, which probably helps our situation). They gave us 10% off for March, which is when the lockdown started, even though almost everyone was supposed to still get most of their salaries, missing only 4 days of work. They gave us a 15% discount for April, because we paid on time. The other option, that was given to all the tenants, including those that have been living here less than 3 months, is to pay a minimum of R1000, and add R500 to your rent in the following months to make up for the rent missed. And our landlord is actually a stingy bastard.
There are two sides to this coin. Renters and landlords. Both deserve protection, both are capable of great injustice and no doubt both have bills to pay. People need to negotiate a happy medium here.
Man am I glad we were finally able to purchase a home last year. Being a renter is so hard and 99% of landlords are just absolute scum
I hope you still have a job to pay your mortgage!
Load More Replies...Just, why? What the he'll is wrong with these people?! Greedy a******s that's what they are! .....sorry I feel very strongly about this
Lot of generalizations happening here. My family heavily depends on the rent we charge because we are still paying property taxes, maintaining the small number of houses we manage, etc. We're not wealthy. "Landlords" are not evil by nature. We want, with all our hearts, to exempt the few tenants we have from paying rent - that means taking it in the pocket ourselves, instead of them. This is affecting all of us.
You don't have insurance to protect you for when tenants can't pay?
Load More Replies...I saw a lot of "that's illegal" comments. The problem is, unless your rental contract explicitly spells out some of this, a lot of what is happening is, in fact, legal due to loopholes. Slumlords, as I like to call them, put vague verbiage into rental agreements they know the tenants won't fully read or won't fully understand, and many renters sign the lease expecting to be treated fairly.
This is much more relevant than professional artists and influencers making "spontaneous" art for money or millions of reddit wannabes waiting entire weeks for the right angle with their cats.
The most our landlords did was freeze rental amounts for lease renewals. Which is why we're moving out and into a new place. I'm also moving because we live near a golf course and I'm tired of finding dents on my car because the local golf course doesn't want to install nets to protect neighboring properties.
Ok. Now we should go to see this. https://www.boredpanda.com/coronavirus-wholesome-quarantine-good-news/
Man these really are tough times... I agree a lot of these landlords are acting pretty jerky, but they're in trouble too. Money is tight... Time to go rewatch the blind and deaf puppy waking up video
I don't know about landlord business', but my parents own the house we live in and rent the upstairs because our income wouldn't be able to handle the monthly bills. A lot of families do this in my area. God forbid the tenants upstairs stop paying (Even though they all have their jobs and can still pay rent, by the state of emergency laws they do not have to pay rent during this time even with a salary) my family will literally be struggling for months on end. We didn't rent for profit, we rented to pay off our mortgage, water, gas, etc. which is most definitely not frozen.

Sounds like my landlord. I flat out told her today that I am unemployed because of the pandemic, have received NO money (no unemployment or stimulus) and am doing freelance work to desperately try to catch up. That I am eating only the minimum to keep me alive and am having to go without medication I desperately need because I am making paying these jerks my only priority. And she didn't even care - she literally doesn't care if I die so long as she gets her money, which they don't even need because they have thousands of tenants. What kind of person just continues to harass you for money even once you've told them you are sacrificing your medication to pay them what you already have???? I just paid the April rent 10 days ago and emptied out my bank account. She yelled at me today for not being able to make another payment today. Listen, you VULTURE, I just gave you all my money 10 days ago. THE MONEY IS SIMPLY NOT HERE - unless you think it grows on trees or something? She was so rude and nasty and acted like I'm just some deadbeat who will never pay them rather than even bothering to acknowledge the situation we are in right now. I work in a restaurant, and they haven't opened up yet. People like this are trash. And what's funny is she went on and on about how gracious and understanding they've been because they didn't charge late fees in April and May. Sorry, no. You don't get a medal for not being a COMPLETE vulture. Plus I don't think they were even legally allowed to charge late fees, so they don't get to take credit for that. As soon as I have moved on to another apartment, I am going to blast the hell out of these people all over the internet and make it so that everyone knows what they are truly made of.
This is all a result of the rampant speculation that has taken place in urban areas around the world over the the last 40 years. They bought way more properties sold at higher costs than they could afford and are working on very thin margins. If the tenants default or go on strike (as is already happening) they won't be able to pay their ridiculously over-stretched loans and will give the keys to the banks. The main difference is that they can file for bankruptcy protection* while their tenants get nothing. (don't worry, the executives still get their golden parachutes and generous bonuses) This is in large part what happened in 2008. It's a row of paper dominoes in a hurricane.
Whilst most of these people are a*sholes, as someone who has leased their property to others I can understand some of the frustration from the landlords. I had my flat left in the most disgusting state by people that I knew. Had someone stop paying for 3 months because he lost his job, gave him the benefit of the doubt because he said how much he loved it and was had more work then he just left. I've been left out of pocket, with huge bills to cover, black listed address due to non payment of bills, damages to the property and then some. All this with all the contracts in place, did everything 'right'. It's not something I would ever do again. People do not respect other people's properties, the pandemic doesn't change that fact.
Never have I been so glad to have a secure roof over my head with no threat of eviction etc, I feel so so bad for those in these situations. More needs to be done globally to help those with nasty/ uncaring landlords
We have a pretty serious problem coming down the line: there are currently protections against eviction, but even if your apartment or landlord is "nice" and puts up a payment plan, many folks will have to still provide back rent without any additional income (and no substantial assistance). We're going to have a hugr surge of eviction this summer, which has all sorts of dreadful downstream consequences for everyone.
I live in a basement apt. 7 mths in on a 1 yr lease. I pay my rent a week early every mth. I have a temp lay off and I am on my 3rd week. I assumed my landlords knew as they live upstairs. I mentioned to her the other day while taking garbage out how bored I was being home. She was in shock. When I went in I heard her and her husband freaking out about me being home not working. I was so scared I payed my May rent that night April 15th. I then heard them on the phone asking their Lawyer son how to get me out of the apt. The issue ? They are upset because I am home all day and not at work. It seems this is a huge invasion of their privacy and a drain on their resources ( heat , water etc) Not gonna lie I am seriously worried I may be evicted. At 55 and a min wage worker finding another unit will be tough. Their attitude towards me has changed drastically. I went from being treated with respect and kindness to being treated like a welfare bum.
For Janice DuMont and any MA residents. --------- https://masslandlords.net/laws/covid-19-coronavirus-landlord-tenant-laws-and-regulations/ ----------- "Updated March 31: the Federal CARES Act (stimulus package) may have ended all Massachusetts late fees and nonpayment filings through July 25, and thereafter changed the notice period for nonpayment from 14 days to 30 days. The language appears to apply overbroadly to all properties that might “in any way” benefit from the existence of federal government involvement in the mortgage market, including most if not all residential and commercial mortgages."
I can see the commercials coming up: "Were you evicted during the COVID epidemic? Did your landlord make monetary demands and threaten you with eviction? Those are illegal tactics and you have the right to legal and financial compensation. Call the number below." Tons of lawyers can make some money and get a name with this kind of work and there will be compensation of karmic force to all these landlords
I wonder if Renters Insurance covers rent during a pandemic? I honestly don't know the answer. Anyone???
Dear renters - your landlord has to pay a mortgage on the property. If you don't pay your rent, the bank will foreclose on the property. The "evil landlord" also has to pay taxes, insurance, home owners association dues, and in some cases - utilities. All of those things are paid for by your rent check - the tiny it that is left over, is what the landlord makes as a profit. Taking care of the property is his job, and the money he makes is his salary. If you think it is wrong to pay rent, then you should buy your own home... and see what happens if you fail to pay the taxes or mortgage. PS - for the posters that think landlords get "leeway" on their obligations - you are wrong. Banks want their mortgage payments, and cities want their tax money - period.
Cool, but you realize people aren't not paying rent for funsies, they're not paying rent because they lost their f*****g jobs, right?
Load More Replies...Aside from now utterly nasty (and sometimes incoherent) some of these letters are, there is a core of truth. I'm not a landlord, and I don't want to give the impression that I'm a "landlord sympathizer" but there is a bigger picture to see here. The landlords that don't actively seek payment and let the property go to hell aren't doing the tenants any favors. What do we expect them to do when people don't pay? Also, I wonder how bad things are getting for so many of these letters to be so horrible and lack even basic courtesy.
I mean, while I don't agree with the tone a lot of these places are taking, it is kind of unfair to the businesses to lose the money too. As pointed out by several of them, their expenses continue on uninterrupted. I don't think they should be being arsehats to people, and the ones that are jacking up prices are just vile. But I kind of empathize with both sides here. It's a bad situation all around.
I don't get some of the comments to be honest. I'm not talking about rude a*s comments, but simple notifications about the fact that rent must be paid. those people live off of those rents, they also have bills to take care of, so why are people angry that they won't let people live in their property for free?
What did you expect, Landlords and Property Management Companies are scum. I'd love for someone to make a TV show about a Serial Killer that only kills a*****e Landlords.
