After Being Forced To Homeschool Their Children Due To Coronavirus, Parents Realize That Teachers Deserve More Respect
The world is facing a pandemic and for this reason, to get the crisis under control, health officials are recommending that everyone stay home. Schools are being closed down, which means that many children who don’t have the opportunity to take remote classes are being homeschooled by their parents. And just hours into the homeschooling process, many of them have realized just how grateful they are for teachers.

Pictures posted to social media show some kids doing their school work under their parents’ strict supervision, while some little rascals are left to their own devices as many parents are forced to combine their own work with homeschooling. If anything, the situation is reminiscent of the ever-funny viral video of a BBC commentator whose children burst into the room while the man was mid-broadcast.
The viral Twitter thread started off with a tweet from Shonda Rhimes who now homeschools her two young children

Shonda Rhimes—a well-known TV producer and author—tweets about how she has been homeschooling her 6-year-old and 8-year-old for a little bit more than an hour. Apparently, the time frame was enough to make the woman appreciate her kids’ teachers like she never has before. “Teachers deserve to make a billion dollars a year,” she writes. “Or a week,” Shonda then corrects herself. “Now imagine 25 of them in one classroom!” another woman comments, making us all feel guilty for the way we treated our teachers back in school.

Luckily, the internet is now full of resources on how to make the homeschooling process more enjoyable for both parties. Firstly, CNN suggests recognizing that homeschooling is not regular school. “Under these circumstances, we’re not going to entirely replace all of the structures that happen at school. But we can do a couple of things to make kids feel more secure and to make us feel like we’re making the most of this time,” Kimberly Fox, staff developer for The Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University in New York, told CNN.
Secondly, the writers of the article recommend parents let their kids get involved in the decision-making since they don’t get to do this often in their regular school environments. Thirdly, the article points out the importance of making a schedule. Then, the writers suggest taking into account that every kid has different needs and it’s the perfect time to recognize that since they’re not crammed into classrooms in huge groups. Lastly, CNN recommends taking regular recesses (like going outside for a bit), letting your kids work independently on some projects, getting crazy with creative crafts, and finally—accepting your own limits and not beating yourself up about something that’s not going right.

Food for thought: if people really had to homeschool their kids on a regular basis, they'd probably have fewer kids and would undoubtedly stay out of my business when I say "I don't want to have kids". Just saying.
If people raised their kids better in the first place, so they were better behaved, they’d enjoy time with their kids more, and the teachers wouldn’t have such a difficult job.
Doesn’t always work that way. It has been proven that kids act up more around their parents because that is their safe place. You also haven’t accounted for children who actually have learning and behavioural issues. My daughter has ASD, ADHD and a language disability and her behaviour can be challenging, I know for a fact we both couldn’t cope with me homeschooling her. And my son, well he has GDD, possible ADHD and a language disability. My son and daughter can hardly be in the same room together without fighting or yelling at each other. And it isn’t through lack of trying of teaching them the right behaviours and expectations on how they should present themselves etc.

I don't know... I'm homeschooled (Been that way since 7th Grade) and I absolutely love it! I'm super motivated though, so I guess not everyone's kids are this way. But I believe that if you give your kids the homework, and support them & help them, then they can easily accomplish all of their coursework from home! I actually find it brings families together and parents get to be more interactive in their kid's studies! Works for my family, and the best part is, we are totally unaffected by the quarantine because we just stay at home anyways! LOL! :)
I'd say it depends on the kids and the parents. The motivation of the kids to learn is one thing but that doesn't mean a thing without the parents motivation (and ability) to teach.

I've been homeschooled since 4th grade (I'm in 8th now), and I love it! I've always preferred bring able to plan out my own schedule, and at this point all my mom has to do is hand me the teacher's planner and i will go do my work. My younger sister though, my mom has to constantly help her. My parents are giving me the choice on either going to public high school or staying home, and I prefer to stay home. I completely understand that homeschooling isn't for everybody, but for some of us, it works great!

First, people who are forced into homeschool need to stop calling this homeschool. It is not homeschool. If anything, it is public school at home. What the forced homeschool parents and the parent who homeschool do are very different. Many Homeschool parents spend hours researching curriculum, planning, grading, and working with their children to make sure they understand something before moving on. Forced homeschool is just doing whatever the public sends home and tells them to do, then letting the teachers check the box just to shove that child to the next grade and he someone else problem. When we can fix the issue in the education system, get rid of the teacher who just wants a paycheck, and stop with this one size fit all learning we have. Then we should pay them more.
I'm actually loving the homeschooling, but I've done some tutoring before, including tutoring a homeschooled kid, so I'm more comfortable with it. I'm actually pondering making the homeschooling arrangement permanent, even after this present crisis is over. We are having such a great time with it.
Maybe people should remember this post when it comes time to raise your taxes to pay for education. Seriously, people. You compare what's going on in schools now, to when lot of us were in school- it's hell for a lot of these teachers.. Kids have no respect. Teachers are unable to maintain order in their classrooms anymore- you get one asshat kid who decides to act out, and ruin learning for the rest of the class. And teachers aren't allowed to discipline kids anymore, so that's one big reason our education system is tanking, and we're falling further and further behind in STEM compared to other countries.
Then add in the active shooter drills we do every week. . . Yeah, hopefully more people will realize the service we teachers provide to society as a whole instead of always crucifying us for stuff. Yup and you're right, one kid can destroy learning for all the kids in the classroom and the teacher is ALWAYS at fault because every kid is perfect cuz their parent says they are. It's a very tough job and hopefully more parents will realize that fact. If your helping 1 or 2 kids, just imagine the number at your table is now 30 kids. One of the toughest jobs out there.

One thing to keep in mind: while most everyone can *learn*, not everyone can *teach*. Does that mean teachers should deal with all the Karen mom/dads? Nope. Does it mean they should be paid more? HELL YES!! Teachers arent *just* a teacher, they help: raise your kids, help them focus on/find their strengths, stengthen their weaknesses (think math, science or spelling), instill a love of learning or mathematics or reading. They deserve to get paid a *LOT* more.
I will be the first to admit that I can't do it. I ended up putting my kids in an in home daycare thats amazing. they have curriculum and do fever checks and everything. WeeCare! I highly recommend them! https://weecare.co/
I have homeschooled my kids for the past five years. If I suddenly had to implement a public school curriculum chosen by someone else for each of them, I would pull out all my hair and run away screaming. Public school at home is not the same as homeschooling by any stretch of the imagination.
