Cecil The Lion And 160 Endangered Animals Projected On Empire State Building

Endangered species aren’t always in the forefront of pubic debate, but the topic received significant attention this past weekend in New York. For three hours Saturday night, the Empire State Building’s facade was lit by up to 40 projectors shining striking images of 160 different endangered species. “Projecting Change” was organized by the Discovery Channel to promote its new documentary Racing Extinction, which airs this December.

Amongst the images shown was one of Cecil the Lion, a 13-year-old male Southwest African lion who lived in the Hwange National Park in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe. He was shot and killed by Walter Palmer, an American dentist and recreational big-game hunter on July 1st, 2015. Cecil was lured out of sanctuary in which he lived, shot with an arrow, tracked for 40 hours, and finally killed with a rifle. The death prompted outrage among animal conservationists.

Whoever though of this idea deserves to be commended. What a wonderful idea to bring a awareness of the plight of endangered animals. Bravo!

Cecil didn't die in vain. Hopefully the movement that his death started has made many more people aware that actions, (i.e. buying ivory products) have big consequences.

Wonderful idea but tragic how people have abused and destroyed wildlife and wild places! Time to stop the savage slaughter now!

Am I the only one bothered by this being a "pubic" debate instead of a "public" debate? Not usually a typo nazi, but that's kind of a big one.

Is anyone else bothered that this is a "pubic" instead of "public" debate? I'm not usually a typo nazi, but that one is pretty bad.

This is called a tipping point. Humans have finally awakened to the awful truth of trophy hunting and other exploits we put upon fellow creatures and we are ready to fight en mass! I for one am hopeful for big changes!

What a great tribute. However, I hope that the conservation cry doesn't crest then fade from over saturation. As a public, we must keep pressure on every industry that supports these murderers.

do you really think 300,000 extra (unwanted) humans a year would be a good thing?! We are massively overpopulated already and the rest of the planet is suffering as a result..

While I think this is a lovely idea, the Empire State Building would NOT go gold for September--pediatric cancer awareness month. Not even for three hours. Not even ONE. What does it say about our priorities when the world goes crazy over a lion, but doesn't acknowledge the seven children a DAY who die from cancer. I cannot applaud them for putting animals above children. Go to www.cannonballkidscancer.org for details.

Take your agenda elsewhere. Millions and millions of people work constantly to raise money for children's' cancer but so very much gets suck up by the CEO's and Directors salaries that its pretty discouraging. Chase them, not a light display that is trying to protect creatures that future generations of children won't get to see if something isn't done NOW!

It appears our society values animal life over human life. Unborn babies are murdered everyday under the guise of " A womans right to choose". Please tell me how this is different than this "Hunters right to choose which wild animal he shoots"? He is made out to be a criminal while the doctors who are murdering unborn babies are providing a valued service for a womans right to choose. Doesn't that prove that our society values an animals life over a humans life?

You think the woman had a right to chose to not have unprotected sex. I guess that would mean personal responsibility and we can't have any more of that.
