Artists Pay Tribute To The Pregnant Elephant Who Died Due To Someone Stuffing A Pineapple With Fireworks
On May 27, a pregnant elephant died in Kerala, India, of excruciating pain after it bit into a pineapple filled with firecrackers. The explosives went off in her mouth, damaging her jaw grievously.
A spokesperson from the Kerala Forest Department told Sky News that farmers are known to put fireworks inside food and plant it on the edges of their fields to keep away wild animals.
The incident came to the public's attention when forest officer Mohan Krishnan, part of the team who attempted to rescue the animal, shared the story on Facebook.

"She trusted everyone. When the pineapple she ate exploded, she must have been shocked not thinking about herself, but about the child she was going to give birth to in 18 to 20 months," Mr. Krishnan said.
Officials say the wild elephant probably wandered out of the Silent Valley National Park (SVNP) in search of food. It is believed to have reached the Malappuram District, where the animal allegedly bit into the fruit stuffed with firecrackers.

Animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi said Malapurram is one of the most dangerous places for animals in the whole county. "It is a murder, Malappuram is famous such incidents, it is India's most violent district. For instance, they throw poison on roads so that 300-400 birds and dogs die at one time," she said, adding that an elephant is killed every 3 days in Kerala.
The elephant's tongue and mouth were so badly injured, she wasn't able to eat. "She didn't harm a single human being even when she ran in searing pain in the streets of the village. She didn't crush a single home," Mr. Krishnan added.
The elephant later got to the Velliyar River and stood there with her head partially underwater. The forest officer explained that two captive elephants were brought to lead her out of the river, but she wouldn't move. Eventually, she died while still standing in the water.
Officials took her back to the forest in a truck and cremated her there. So far, it isn't clear where exactly the animal got hurt.

Local authorities have registered the case and initiated a probe into the killing of the 15-year-old elephant. Two organizations announced money rewards to anyone who can provide information that would lead to an arrest.
While the investigation is underway, people on social media have been paying tribute to the poor animal by sharing artworks they made to honor it.

My daughter's favorite animal is the elephant, reading this article and scrolling down the page to see the tributes to the momma elephant and her unborn calf caused an instant stream of tears to roll down my face. I don't think violence solves anything, but in this case I would shove the same pineapple into their mouths and make them bite... I understand they want to protect their farm ... but this is f****d up.
Too many farms, too many people deprived of their conscience. 80 % of all grains planted is used to feed animals - billions upon the billions of animals to be heinously slaughtered to cater to human insatiable appetite for meat, dairy, and eggs. I have been to Kerala a number of times and it's hard to believe this incident happened there. Kerala is not the usual India we see in movies, entire state is like a tropical rain forest with rich greenery, actually the state is one of the cleanest and non-chaotic places I have explored in India. I'ts really hard to believe such an incident happened there. I don't think they could have done it intentionally, because I have seen people with pet elephants in Kerala (yes, pet elephants) and people taking them for walk and even bathing them in ponds. Upon scrolling through the news reports about the sad incident, I think the poor elephant may have eaten sweet-coated crackers that farmers use to ward off wild hogs that destroy their farms. elephant_b...77a078.jpg

Hi. I'd like to bring your attention to the following. The article needs slight correction as the barbaric incident did not take place in Malappuram but in Mannarkkad division of Palakkad district. Actually, India is so messed up right now. With a communal right wing govt at the Centre, every incident blows up on the internet and is somehow always blamed on the minorities however false the claim be. And thus, the actual issue is always forgotten, and no solution is reached.In this particular incident, as reported by some news sites, Maneka Gandhi, who's is a member of the party in power at centre, she tried to balme it on Malappuram which is the only minority populated district in the state of Kerala. I absolutely agree 100% with you, feeding explosives to innocent animals is evil beyond anything they can conceive. Mind you, the bombfruit was likely intended for a wild boar rather than a passing elephant, but the crime is the same. Ideally some civic-minded angel over there needs to form a search party and search local farms for fruit boobietrapped with explosives and poison so the devices can be disarmed and removed. Personally I would want to shove any such device I found, RECTALLY into the owner of the land I discovered the device on, but I realise that is a crime and just my anger, heartbreak and shame talking. As long as we dismantle and remove the devices, I would be content. In any event, I live on the wrong continent to be of any use, so I will do what I can and donate to an elephant sanctuary instead.

What a way to begin the morning...I am heartbroken and crying over this poor elephant and her baby. I am so very sorry. Elephants are majestic animals, and humans have the hubris to think that we are enlightened and superior beings. We are a danger to ourselves and everything around us. Rest in peace, beautiful ones.

They said they put fire crackers in the pineapple to keep wild animals from eating their crops. The elephant wasn't aware of this, as the wild animals around there probably began to understand. If this is true, I don't think anyone was trying to hurt a pregnant innocent elephant. What else can farmers do to make sure their food grows? So they can feed themselves, and sell their product to others? Especially pineapple, which takes pretty long to grow. Every being on this earth is just trying to live, and survive, including humans. Please forgive those who are remorseful, and you know what, forgive those who are not remorseful as well. In forgiveness, there is sanity.

When I first saw this I was stunned for a moment. Then suddenly, I wanted take revenge on anyone who did this. The elephants don’t deserve this.
The person or person involved in this act must be found and must die in the same manner as this elephant and her baby died. All associated with covering up this crime against nature and HIS animals of the land, air and seas, must be punished with death. A POX on their families, friends, neighbors and village(s) who harbor these criminals. Find them and do the same to them as they did to this gentle mother and her child. POX on this country.
Someone needs to go out into that farmland with a few friends and search for these intrepid fruit pioneer farmers. Whatever bombfruit or poisonfruit is found, goes into the farmer that placed it. RECTALLY. It probably won't teach humankind their place in nature, but after what has been perpetrated on literally every other species on this world, it's the least we can do to atone for our behaviour. Although us Keralites are horribly saddened at this, 2 points to be corrected here. The incident happened in Palakkad district and not Malappuram. The elephant died closeby to Malappuram. Miss Maneka Gandhi, quoted in this article, is indeed an animal activist, but her right wing politics takes priority. She quoted Malappuram district solely because of its higher muslim population. She spun this tragedy to incite communal violence and outrage. This was formally addressed by our CM and FIR's filed against her for these comments. Secondly, the elephant was not "fed" the pineapple on purpose. I do not condone what happened. But many newspapers and publications made it sound like it was deliberate. Yes, farmers have been using this archaic method as a deterrent for wild boars and other animals (again, I'm not saying any animal deserves this to happen to them) but unfortunately it took this horrible incident for laws to be changed and farmers to be educated.

The same with wild horses here, they are being rounded-up with helicopters and massacred, so public land could be used by ranchers for beef production. Billions upon the billions animals are raised in the world to be slaughtered, never enough meat for 7.8 billion of disgusting, destructive, heartless, irresponsible "people". How supposed to our planet support all this? Ill, cruel humans are meating themselves out of existence...taking us all down with them; but why animals have to suffer for it?

Hi. I'd like to bring your attention to the following. The article needs slight correction as the barbaric incident did not take place in Malappuram but in Mannarkkad division of Palakkad district. Actually, India is so messed up right now. With a communal right wing govt at the Centre, every incident blows up on the internet and is somehow always blamed on the minorities however false the claim be. And thus, the actual issue is always forgotten, and no solution is reached.In this particular incident, as reported by some news sites, Maneka Gandhi, who's is a member of the party in power at centre, she tried to balme it on Malappuram which is the only minority populated district in the state of Kerala. Many people have pointed it out to her in the reply of her tweet. I don't know what kind of humans would be so awful to an innocent animal and the what kind of person/s would give the f****d up incident a communal colour. Hope, we as humans find our humanity. I absolutely agree 100% with you, feeding explosives to innocent animals is evil beyond anything they can conceive. Mind you, the bombfruit was likely intended for a wild boar rather than a passing elephant, but the crime is the same. Ideally some civic-minded angel over there needs to form a search party and search local farms for fruit boobietrapped with explosives and poison so the devices can be disarmed and removed. Personally I would want to shove any such device I found, RECTALLY into the owner of the land I discovered the device on, but I realise that is a crime and just my anger, heartbreak and shame talking. As long as we dismantle and remove the devices, I would be content. In any event, I live on the wrong continent to be of any use, so I will do what I can and donate to an elephant sanctuary instead.

Didn't you read the introduction to this story? Farmers do this to protect their fields on the land they stole from the wild. They do that routinely. Farmers with their huge families. India too needs to control its human population.

Ok, boars are sentient beings too. Farmers need not to have six, twelve children. Every reasonable human couple have two children so the human population would not explode further, people supposed to be smarter than animals. Well, that explains what happened a bit more accurately; the original reports said the Elephant was fed a pineapple stuffed with crackers- I couldn't figure out why that would cause it to die. Now it all makes sense- they meant firecrackers; wtf is wrong with people...
They said they put fire crackers in the pineapple to keep wild animals from eating their crops. The elephant wasn't aware of this, as the wild animals around there probably began to understand. If this is true, I don't think anyone was trying to hurt a pregnant innocent elephant. What else can farmers do to make sure their food grows? So they can feed themselves, and sell their product to others? Especially pineapple, which takes pretty long to grow. Every being on this earth is just trying to live, and survive, including humans. Please forgive those who are remorseful, and you know what, forgive those who are not remorseful as well. In forgiveness, there is sanity.
There has to be other non-lethal options. And people need to control their population!!!

When I first saw this I was stunned for a moment. Then suddenly, I wanted take revenge on anyone who did this. The elephants don’t deserve this.
The person or person involved in this act must be found and must die in the same manner as this elephant and her baby died. All associated with covering up this crime against nature and HIS animals of the land, air and seas, must be punished with death. A POX on their families, friends, neighbors and village(s) who harbor these criminals. Find them and do the same to them as they did to this gentle mother and her child. POX on this country.
Someone needs to go out into that farmland with a few friends and search for these intrepid fruit pioneer farmers. Whatever bombfruit or poisonfruit is found, goes into the farmer that placed it. RECTALLY. It probably won't teach humankind their place in nature, but after what has been perpetrated on literally every other species on this world, it's the least we can do to atone for our behaviour. We are the only ones that can police inhumans. We owe it to this world to at least try.

Although us Keralites are horribly saddened at this, 2 points to be corrected here. The incident happened in Palakkad district and not Malappuram. The elephant died closeby to Malappuram. Miss Maneka Gandhi, quoted in this article, is indeed an animal activist, but her right wing politics takes priority. She quoted Malappuram district solely because of its higher muslim population. She spun this tragedy to incite communal violence and outrage. This was formally addressed by our CM and FIR's filed against her for these comments. Secondly, the elephant was not "fed" the pineapple on purpose. I do not condone what happened. But many newspapers and publications made it sound like it was deliberate. Yes, farmers have been using this archaic method as a deterrent for wild boars and other animals (again, I'm not saying any animal deserves this to happen to them) but unfortunately it took this horrible incident for laws to be changed and farmers to be educated.

I really wish, I'd had never heard of this. the only good thing about this going viral is that maybe, somehow, it'll reach the twisted minds of the perpetrators who clearly have learned that this kind of cruelty is normal, maybe even 'funny' and that, maybe, they realize they are on the verge of becoming psychopaths. we have them everywhere -usually men - running around inflicting violence on animals.
