Women Post Selfies With Half-Made-Up Faces To Fight Makeup Shaming
Women who love to wear a lot of makeup can sometimes be accused by others of being insecure or of being overly concerned with impressing men, but Nikkie, a Youtuber famous for her makeup tutorials and expertise, wants to change all that.
After she posted a video showing the power of makeup and how much she loves it, women started to post their own half-made-up selfies on Instagram, sharing their own insights with the hashtag #ThePowerOfMakeup. Some women enjoy makeup because it's fun, others because it makes them feel better, and yet others because it's an art form!

I think that you guys are missing the point. The only reason you say she's prettier without makeup is because it's cool and "empowering" to say that now. She's pretty when she feels pretty. With or without makeup.
Either that or people really do think this way. No matter how bad you think of people some are honestly kind.
Load More Replies...UUUGHHHH.. you guys are making her point, and making yourselves look stupid. When you say things like that, you are devaluing her choice to do what she wants with her own face and body. It is a subtle but real judgement. You are not complimenting her, you are foisting your opinions of how she should be beautiful, onto her. 'Hidden behind way too much mascara', is a direct judgement of her choice to wear as much damn mascara as she wants. It's even more maddening when women say stuff like that. Ugh.
She can wear however much makeup she wants, but I still think that in her particular case I like without makeup better. Doesn't mean that she has to do one way or the other, or that I'm judging her. Actually I feel like I'm judging the world's view of makeup, because it's changing her natural beauty into something that society has defined as beautiful. It kind of bums me out. But I'm not judging her choices.
Load More Replies...So much more beautiful w/o makeup! So big and wonderful eye(s) witch gets hidden behind way too much mascara
She's really beautiful without any makeup. But with it she's just a girl like thousands, nothing special.
I am so jealous if her perfect complexion! She looks absolutely gorgeous both ways
Yes, she looks marvelous with all the paint on, and if she feels better with it on, that's her perogative. But I never saw the point of all the fakery, false nails, body shapers, bosom implants, makeup, etc. Why can't people just be happy with what and who they are? Work on the inside, not the outside, that's where true beauty comes from...
I agree, your unmade eye really draws you in. I understand if you dont want to go full on nude but maybe you can do something more natural? Cause you really are a natural beauty.
your Make-up is wonderful done! it looks like glamour but not too much!
100% gorgeous regardlesss! Whatever makes her feel that way!! She rocks both looks!
Looks like 2 different people. Which can actually be a good thing. Gorgeous! Which ever one she chooses on any given day, she's still beautiful.
Beautiful, such beautiful bone structure, I want your cheek bones! Beautiful with or without ♥
The one with the makeup reminds me of that Ballerina movie. Beautiful.
I think this girl missed the point, she's wearing full foundation and lipstick
Christine, your profile picture is at an awful angle, with light on half your face and making you look real dumb when your coming on to every photo on here and talking about the angle and lighting. Shut up. And Christina, have you even read a single thing about this thread? That's entirely for her to decide! She is gorgeous with the makeup she chooses. That lipstick color compliments the skin perfectly! So pretty!

did you think about how hypocritical is to tell women in the first place, that they can do whatever they want to do with their bodies and then judge them, tell them what they shouldn't do. it is just not how things work. it is their body, our body, and we decide for ourselves. we shouldn't let others to tell us what we can or cannot do with our bodies. maybe you think she is prettier without makeup, but she may not see the same as you do when she looks in the mirror. remember that.
tbh they look better without makeup ; n; or maybe they exaggerated their makeup on purpose?
Everyone who thinks they're being kind by telling someone they look better without makeup: it's like if one of these ladies painted you a picture, and you turned around and said, "Oh, I wish you hadn't done that. Your poems are better." People work hard on makeup! Appreciate it!
I'd be feeling this super much, IF women did not feel like they couldn''t leave the house without makeup, IF women weren't treated as sexual objects and were blamed for it for their looks, and IF the cosmetic industry didn't profit from promoting poor self-esteem in women. But, you know. Sure, wear whatever you want, as long as you're not treating women choosing to NOT wear make-up with any less respect and support. But the cosmetic industry is just f*****g horrible in several ways, and you are supporting them by buying and promoting their s**t, so just... be aware of that, I guess.
I think it's worth talking about the fact that a lot of women don't feel valued or acceptable without makeup and won't leave the house before putting it on. That's a bad thing. Also, women being construed and treated as sexual objects. Also bad thing. And the make-up industry earns big money promoting poor self-esteem in women. Also a bad thing. I don't see how this does anything to stop any of that. Of course there's nothing wrong with wearing make-up if you want to and yes it is an art form, but I feel like this is another issue women are told to needlessly fight about while the cosmetic industry - who WANTS you to feel bad about how you look without make-up - laughs all the way to the bank.
We can all do pretty much what they want with our bodies...if it doesn't hurt anyone and doesn't do us harm - why should any one care? We all have a choice of the self expression & its an ART as well. Read also my post - http://biloshytska.com/make-me-up/
To everyone who thinks they're being kind when they tell someone they look better without makeup: You're missing the point! That's like if one of these ladies painted you a picture, and you turned around and say, "Oh, I wish you hadn't done that. Your poems are so much nicer." People work hard on makeup, and spend a ridiculous amount of money! Girls don't always wear makeup bc they're insecure with their natural faces! It's a hobby, and a work of art that's constantly being dismissed as 'petty girl stuff', when in reality it's incredibly intricate and difficult!
Oh goodness ... love them for who they are. Just because you don't like makeup, doesn't mean they shouldn't. They are showing here that they love both sides of the spectrum! (Girls who don't love their face without makeup would not be showing it here!!) Some of you could take a lesson from loving all ways of existing and being, not just your own ...
I think make-up is cool - it's like clothes - up to the person whether they want to wear it or not. Sometimes, like wearing a suit & having neatly styled hair, a little make-up is considered professional. Sometimes (stage make-up specifically) it is necessary & part of the job. Myself, I hardly ever wear makeup because I'm LAZY & can get away with it. But I danced professionally (beledi) so had to use it for performances. Shaming people for what they decide to wear is just ignorant.
I am so happy that I have let go of the constraints of youth. Now, without have to wear makeup and letting my beautiful gray hair fly in the wind, I am truly free. I also made a vow to my Lord and Savior that I will never get cosmetic surgery as just one way of proving my faith. Set yourselves free and accept Jesus as your savior. Stop being so incredibly consumed with yourselves.
My philosophy about make-up is that one should never apply so much of it that people wont recognise you without it. I am just as comfortable with or without it. Make-up is exactly as it says - Make Up.
I love it when people just use make-up to enhance there natural beauty!! Being a girl I totally get waring make up but that doesn't mean your not beautiful without it!! Be confident, love yourself! Jesus loves you! Stay gorgeous:)
A few observations spring to mind. Firstly, most of the women depicted above seem less attractive WITH makeup then without. Secondly, in case of a few females who are much less attractive than the average, the presence of makeup or lack thereof, appears to have no effect whatsoever on their overall appeal. Furthermore, the observed attempt on the part of several subjects to conceal some visible external signs of an ongoing dermatological disorder might have an additional consequence of postponing or altogether evading a proper medical treatment, thus producing undesirable long-term effects.Taking all of the above into consideration, it remains highly doubtful weather wearing makeup does indeed serve the seemingly underlying purpose of increasing the overall perceived attractiveness of a female in the eyes of prospective male partners. It might however, have some other positive outcomes, such as increasing (falsely) the subject's perception of her attractiveness and thus her self-esteem
... as well as self-confidence, which in turn results in her being regarded as more successful, and consequently more attractive by her environment. At this point, a completely different, even though highly counter-intuitive, purpose of female makeup appears to be clear: it is not so much a direct increase in attractiveness as perceived by males, as by other (rival) females. In other words, the more attractive (and thus competitive) a female is considered by her rivals, the more her self-confidence (and prowess) is reinforced, the more successful and hence attractive she appears. This essentially leads to a female being able to win more males without actually appearing any prettier, and thus defying the apparent purpose of makeup as a beauty augmentation tool. Therefore, wearing makeup seems to be indeed the winning strategy in the population-evolution game. Of course, this is altogether a purely academic discourse, and merely a speculation based on my point of view as a male.
Load More Replies...This was pretty neat! For the record, I think it's actually just a little shocking to see how little makeup changes their face! It does change it, don't get me wrong, but it's not all that different. You still see the same face. It's used to enhance naturally beautiful features. And all these girls are so pretty with and without it. I love makeup, because it's fun! :)
I think they all look Amazing ! Let the Girls do their thing. I don't wear any make up anymore but lip stick and gloss. I had my days in the sun. It's fun to put on make up. But the irony is, the girls are so young and beautiful, that that is the One time in their life they don't Have to wear make up. And look so much better with out it on. Make up is used to cover "Flaws". I see no flaws here.
im ok with wearing make up every now and then, but i don't need makeup to be beautiful nor any of these girls, you are beautiful make up should be wear to have fun, not to cover ourselves and try to make something we are not. We are all unique and we have little things that make us special, so be special! be you!
Bored panda makes c**p up. There is no makeup shaming craze. But make up does make a difference. All of these are pictures of girls with one eye bigger than the other.
They are who they are no matter what they do. Even if they get full plastic sugary! They are always them. With or without makeup!! The most important thing is that they like them that they think there beautiful!! And wearing makeup might be there way of feeling beautiful! For me I just like myself better when I'm wearing some makeup! And guess what I'm still me!! Even with makeup
Load More Replies...I have to say that in most of the photos here, I think the women look better withOUT makeup. I think it just detracts from one's natural beauty, especially the horrible false eyelashes.
Oh natural is the way the go:) ...all the people i know who putting all that stuff on there face ....are really scare of lot of stuff cause they got lot on there face right ..... rain , crying, sweat ... naaaaaaaa not usefull for us ......
Let's not forget too that a lot of the natural/nude looks that are so popular are still perfected by using quite a bit of makeup!
Makeup shamming? If they were really doing it for themselves they wouldn't be posting it all over the internet! I am so SICK of people creating things to be upset about just so they can get attention from total strangers. And I really wish Bored Panda would stop giving them a platform to do so. BP, I love your cute animals, art, and travel posts but this c**p I'm really getting sick of seeing in my newsfeed and inbox.
Most of them look better without makeup so I'm not really sure they are proving their point.
"Some women enjoy makeup because it's fun, others because it makes them feel better, and yet others because it's an art form!" this was the point - I'm not sure you understood it. In any case, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Load More Replies...90% wear false eyelashes. I think makeup is really great but don't go too far to add things you don't have. It's suppose to enhance your features, not create ones, and in my opinion these beautiful ladies put on really heavy makeup there (not everyday styles, obviously.). Of course they look better all natural, it's because they are exaggerating the looks on the other side. Only a few ladies are wearing a full face of makeup and heavy eye smokeys/false lashes every day.. That's too much
In my opinion, the whole point of this post and the whole body acceptance trend is that there is no "too much". Who decides what is too much and what isn't or what people should or shouldn't do? I'm not saying you don't have a right to think that fake eyelashes are too much. Just saying :D Makeup can be an art, in which case you go all out and create whatever you want.
Load More Replies...The girl in the video contradicts herself. When she is putting make up on herself its about "i don't have eyebrows", "double chin, no point of the cheek" etc. Its like drawing on your eyes, lips, cheek, skin.. yes, it's fun to see yourself transform into a more perfect form. But is that really you?
I think it's a bit much. Since I became pregnant I've given up wearing make up as my skin has gone very sensitive, and tbh I don't miss it. It might take more of this to stop girls feeling like make up is a must. I can see that it has a practical use if you have uneven skin tone, scarring etc but otherwise it's a waste of money (I wouldn't have imagined myself saying THAT 7 months ago!)
All but one looked better without makep. That is because her skin was mixed shades naturally. In my opinion she still wore too much eye makeup. In the end if wearing makeup makes these ladies feel better then they should go for it. They are hurting , no one.
