This Twitter Thread Petitions The US To Fix Its Post Office System By Suggesting Surprisingly Effective Solutions
After the recent leak of the memos detailing efforts to privatize the United States Postal Service by implementing cost-cutting measures, many have been quite concerned about the possible shutdown. Moreover, people have been brainstorming ways to help save the Post Office.
For instance, a Twitter user named USPostOffice911 has recently created a thread in which they thoroughly explained the current situation surrounding USPS and offered some solutions of how people could contribute to saving the Post Office. Let’s take a look.
More info: twitter.com
Here’s the situation
The user begins by explaining the situation and telling why it’s an important one. “The USPS delivers *everywhere,* including rural areas that private deliveries skip. Vets & senior citizens rely on USPS for med deliveries,” one of the tweets reads. “Without the USPS, a lot of people will be in trouble.”
USPostOffice911 emphasizes the importance of the problem by adding that USPS is one of our country’s largest employers. Besides, this whole situation has the potential to disrupt the upcoming election since many people will use mail-in ballots because of the pandemic.
“Without the USPS, a lot of people will be in trouble”
“The biggest issue about USPS & the election is Trump. If the mail is slow, people might start to actually believe Trump’s unsubstantiated mail voting fraud allegations. His allegations are not based on any actual facts or evidence,” USPostOffice911 continues.
“If the mail is slow, people might start to actually believe Trump’s unsubstantiated mail voting fraud allegations”
Then the user proceeds to explain the root of the problem. “In 2006, a law was passed that forced the USPS to keep cash on hand to fund retirement benefits for the next 75 years. That’s literally billions of dollars. This is the Postal Accountability Act. This is why the USPS’s financial situation is dire,” the user explains. Besides, the new policies implemented by the new Postmaster “overtime & delivering all of the day’s mail, and change sorting processes to make it take longer.”
“In 2006, a law was passed that forced the USPS to keep cash on hand to fund retirement benefits for the next 75 years”
And now, let’s talk about the possible solutions. The first short term solution offered by this Twitter user was including USPS funds in the next round of COVID-19 relief. “Another short term solution floated by Repubs is a loan from Mnuchin’s Treasury Dept. This doesn’t work for many reasons. It’s a loan, which means more debt. The money would have to be spent pursuant to terms set by Mnuchin. And USPS would have to give over proprietary data,” they add.
“USPS funds need to be included in the next round of COVID relief”
And what about the long term solution? “The USPS Fairness Act. This specifically repeals the pre-funding mandate of the 2006 law. It would be a critical fix for USPS’s finances. And it’s been approved by the House. It’s currently sitting in the Senate with no vote planned in sight,” USPostOffice911 explains.
“What’s the long term solution? The USPS Fairness Act”
The user ends their thread by encouraging people to contribute by calling reps. “Say you are a constituent and give your zip code. And then ask: 1) that USPS funding be included in the next relief package; 2) an investigation into Postmaster DeJoy’s new policies; and 3) a vote on the USPS Fairness Act,” the user adds.
“Call your reps. Every day. Seriously”
“Also, be kind to your letter carriers and local postal workers! They are working so hard every day to provide your mail and packages”
Here’s what people had to say about it

Share on FacebookThe post office is a government service. No other government service is expected to break even let alone turn a profit. They do a good job considering the volume they handle. I've had more problems with UPS and FedEx. I can't think of a single time that privatization has improved anything for consumers. It'll make a few rich people richer and to hell with the public.
Why do you hate America? Don't you know that private business is a job creator and leads to more innovative ways? I mean, it hasn't happened yet but it will! Little Donny Dipshit and Steve the Ghoul said so and if you're not a pinko commie, you'll swallow that b******t without question! It's the only patriotic way to think!

Nothing. Trumpanzees are incapable of learning, that's why they're still waiting to be trickled on by the wealthy, the way an obsolete actor/president claimed would happen. It's been almost fifty years with no return, but that just means it's any day now! Or maybe the Rethuglicans just haven't stolen enough tax payer money yet? Time for more tax breaks for political cronies!
Load More Replies...The problem is, Trump and everyone else who are stupid are thinking that the USPS is supposed to be bringing a profit. They are a federal branch... federal is supposed to be supporting them. It makes no sense what so ever to have the public worry when it is not and was never supposed to be a privateered thing.
The CEO of USPS is Louis DeJoy. appointed in May 2020. Known as an expert job-killer and a very loyal fan of the GOP. With his 35 years’ experience in labor analytics—the art of eliminating as many jobs as possible- it was clear that his main goal will be to get rid of as much humans in the USPS as possible. That this process will also mean that there'll be enormous delays in the handling of the mail is a plus for Trump, because it will support his claim that voting by mail is very prone to malversations and just doesn't work. And so Trump has gained another slight advantage in the elections and it gives him the reason to refuse to step down when he doesn't get reelected.
The problem is that Trump supporters don't read the real news, they read only partisan sources, so they are completely ignorant of so many things. A lot of them really do mean well but they have no idea how ignorant they are of facts and details. When you try to hold a conversation with them you realize they've never even heard of half the things going on and they are misinformed on the rest. But they've been convinced that every legitimate news source is 'fake', so they won't get informed.
So to put it in perspective - I live in Australia and when I buy something from the US and something from the other side of MY country, the US parcel arrives weeks earlier.
The USPS is the most popular gov't agency in the USA and is capable of operating without tax revenue and that drives Rethuglicants crazy. Under Nixon they changed the law requiring the USPS to operate at a profit. When that didn't kill it they added the "Must maintain 75 years of retirement funds" law under Dubya Bush, (something corporations would never do). But they then raided that fund to pay off the debt. tRump has threatened to veto any bailout that includes them. So the postal service can be trusted to mail checks to the IRS, to mail out the $1200 stimulus checks, and to handle the ballots of tRump, Pence, and Moscow Mitch but not the rest of us? And btw- the crook he appointed to run it owns over $30m in stock from businesses set up to directly compete the USPS.
This situation with the USPS is one of the most glaring examples of GOP corruption and theft. The GOP get bribes (sorry, "campaign contributions") from private companies who then lobby to take over and control the market while stealing billions from tax-payers. These corporations pay no tax, are monopolies, and indulge in constant price fixing until their "service" is just barely affordable. Even then, lower income people, or just people the company doesn't think they can turn a profit on, will be priced out and ignored. The health insurance scam, drug pricing, internet monopolies etc are great examples of necessities that are routinely priced out of reach, or are simply not available to those it would be inconvenient to serve, merely to profit wealthy corporations who bribed the right people. Education is starting to become a similar pickle, but private prisons are the most egregious examples of the evils of corporate greed in the public sector. Prisoners are routinely starved 1/2
2/2 given sub-par food so the company can scrape a few more cents for themselves. They have state contracts that demand they get paid if the prison population falls below a certain percentage, meaning states have an incentive to arrest and incarcerate more people (the US has the highest number of incarcerated people globally). These are literally called "for profit prisons" and are one of the biggest reasons I think this country should burn to the ground. We've let the evil and the corrupt ruin everything we had, so burn that s**t and build something better.

Load More Replies...Postal vehicles date back to the 70s. They limp along, many times breaking down on the route. The company that made the transaxles is no longer in business. Merely getting a new, electric or hybrid fleet in major cities would reduce costs. Rural deliveries would need to be hybrid or gas, as the distances they travel is greater. But updating the fleet is mandatory.
I'm torn. The Post Office is important, but they also give terrible service. I shipped a package to Florida last month. The package arrived in Florida. Then was shipped to Wisconsin. Then was shipped back to Florida. Then finally delivered to recipient. I paid for 3-day Priority Mail. It took two weeks. (For those that don't know, Wisconsin is 1,200 miles from Florida. A little further than Madrid to Amsterdam.)
Doesn't this only prove the point? Okay, maybe not prove it but certainly not disprove it. If there are policies in place to add delays and create problems, then those could be the reason for the terrible service you received.
Load More Replies...This article is nonsense. I worked for USPS for 15yrs. There is absolutely NO way they can handle mail-in voting. The mail is slow because they are government workers. We all know gov workers are slowwwww. They have a union that keeps them from getting fired. They are also not equipped for parcel delivery but with online buying being so high it has flooded the system which slows them down even more. This has zero to do with Trump. (And for the record, I'm not a Trump fan but it's annoying to hear everyone blame every dumb s**t in him.)
The problem is that there is already a lot of voter fraud and doing it by mail would open the door for even more! You people that don't think there is voter fraud are just not paying attention. Milwaukee routinely have more votes in some of their wards than there are registered voters.
This is not solely a Trump problem. The USPS has been declining for a long time because, in my experience, they suck. I've had packages shipped to me from the next city (online purchase) go three states away before coming back and reaching me. My current mail carrier just arbitrarily sends my mail back to sender without reason or even letting me know. I find out when the bank calls to verify my address. I have no outdoor animals nor obstructions to my box. I've had them lose multiple packages, some of which surface months after the fact. This has happened in both cities in which I've lived. They're trash.
I worked for USPS for many years in many states, let me tell you this is propaganda. No this isn't some political message or any nonsense I may be accused of. I saw, in literally every USPS facility mail mishandled and damaged daily. I saw mail get stuck to bottom of postal equipment and end up on the other side of the country near daily. I've seen mail be given to management because it was lying on the ground and getting stepped on and it was left on a desk for near a month. They incentive management to abuse employees. New employees will work roughly 68 hrs a week (as recently as last week) so older employees only have to work 40. The unions don't do anything because they're friends with management everywhere I've been.
I worked for the post for a number of years, let me tell you, this is a propaganda piece. I worked in many many post offices it's a pretty even mix of wants it privatized vs kept public. but i can tell you one thing for sure everywhere i've went mail was mishandled, damaged, and left lying on desks for months. I've seen mail that was going the next city over in Michigan some how end up in California. I quit recently when, no matter where i went, the union and management were best friends and neither acted in employees best interests.
I despise the USPS. First of all, I do not support Trump at all. But when a service has zero customer service by never picking up the phone, refusing to do anything about a stolen package, steals from my kid's birthday cards, delivers to the wrong address time and time again, and overall has a bad attitude then it makes you wonder if it's really Trumps fault.
Sounds like they are understaffed and don't have the manpower to provide you good service. Would you rather they be punished further, or given proper financial support so they can provide better service?

Susceptible people could be coerced with regular voting too and isn't political parties trying to get dou to vote a certain way what we call "election campaigns"? There's a huge difference between going to the dollar store and going to a polling station. For one thing, you don't have to take a day off work to go shopping and you don't have to stand in line for hours on end. There is no evidence whatsoever that mail-in voting is linked to electoral fraud. Honestly, who would risk going to prison just to have their cat vote and get one extra ballot? This comment sounds like an uninformed person stating opinions as facts.
