Possum Tries To Steal Cat’s Food, And Cat’s Reaction Is Priceless (7 Pics)

I’m a pretty chilled out kinda guy, I don’t get angry so easily. But come between me and my food and you’re dead meat! So I can really sympathize with the plight of this poor kitty, who went out for dinner only to find an impostor out there, tucking in uninvited!

Rather than the expected paws-of-fury, this pussy reacted with a rather impotent whine to its owner, as if to say ”why are you allowing this to happen to me?” Faced with nothing more than a pretty tame looking possum, this cat seems to have lost its natural instincts when it comes to protecting its food. Still, it makes for an amusing story, as told by Imgur user MrRogers247.

The look on the kitty’s face is just too much, as it implores its owner. “Come on man, just do something!” The plucky possum will not be budged however, and it looks like this time it’s possum 1, cat 0.

Scroll down below to check out how it all unfolded, and let us know what you think in the comments!

“Excuse me, that’s actually MY dinner”

“Umm. A little help please”

“You see there’s been a mistake, you accidentally gave MY dinner to this imposter”

“You serious??? You’re just gonna stand there and take pictures, I’m starving… You know what, that’s fine”

“I can share… oh my favourite. CAT food”

“Ok ok ok sorry, enjoy”

DAAAAAAAD?!

Your cat is right. That possum can do a lot of damage to a cat in a very short amount of time. Stop with the filming and help your poor kitty.

Yes, that’s what I was thinking. That could’ve gone very, very wrong in just seconds. There is a reason possums will not only stand there ground with cats, but dogs and people too.

You're an idiot for filming that just for fkn internet attention. Possums are seriously vicious and territorial. That beautiful cat could have been dead within 30 seconds if that possum felt threatened. But hey, you don't care, whatever's funny right, a*****e?

Opossums are not particularly territorial, but the females are extremely hungry when they are carrying babies and will come out in the day, walk right up to dogs or cats to take their food if they think they can get away with it. They aren't vicious. They are voracious. :) Females with a pouch full of young will saunter right past you into your house in broad daylight to steal cat food if they think you'll let them get by. Being a marsupial with young is hungry work. They will eat whatever they think they can get away with, but they are more likely to play dead (aka "play possum") than try to kill another animal. That doesn't mean your pet can't get a nasty scratch or bite in the process, though, and there's no reason to let either animal get hurt by allowing them to interact. Feed pets indoors. Lock pet doors after dark. If you have opossums in your yard, consider yourself lucky. They do a lot of pest control and their babies are just precious if you're lucky enough to see them.

I feed cats outside in my yard ever day and whenever a opossum comes around, the cats immediately walk away. They don't look at the opossum, they don't growl or hiss at it either. They act like it's not there and walk away in the opposite direction. It's quite odd and my cats also do this when raccoons come around. I'm very glad they're smart enough to know that they shouldn't f**k with a opossum or raccoon but the way they go about avoiding them is strange.

We fought to get a possum out of our house, one night. After what seemed like a screaming eternity, we finally get it out onto the porch to be on its smelly way. Standing with a vacuum in my hand, Hubby still holding the trash bin (our weapons of choice), both of us are huffing and cussing a storm. Our cat, Zell, comes home at that moment, looks at the possum, gives a little sniff, and just walks inside, casual as hell.

This comment thread is a spectacular example of how misinformation and myths can spur a fear/dislike of an animal most people have zero real knowledge about. The opossum hate is strong here and all because people are grossly uneducated about them.

You are the u educated one!!!!!!!possums are very deadly to a cat and in your uneducated mind they just lay down and play dead which is sooo untrue. So you need to educate yourself.

Wow, nice people here. Attacking the original poster. Clearly you know nothing about possums. When they feel threatened, they do NOT attack. They do NOT "hold their ground", they play dead. I had a family of them sneak into my house years ago. Found them in an unused bedroom. It was very easy to remove them. You approach them, wait for them to roll on their side and start drooling ( a little gross), then simply pick them up by their tail. Where do you think the term "playing possum" comes from?

Possums are very rarely territorial and they are pretty docile and skittish, they will "faint" when attacked or provoked. The cat wasnt in danger especially since it wasnt being aggressive towards the possum. Possums hardly have bad diseases and if they do they usually die quickly from it. Highly doubt a possum would kill a cat, scratch or bite once, maybe.

Have both possums and wild cats that we feed, the feral cat colony gives the possums healthy space. Never have seen a fight though. I try to feed the cats earlier, well before sunset as possums are nocturnal.

For everyone saying opossums are dangerous, trust me, they are not. I would not recommend a cat and opossum interacting like this in any case, because of the danger to the possums (you don't want them habituated to domestic animals and humans, they'll die very quickly. A human is more likely to have rabies than a possum, they are very clean animals (not to mention tick vacuums), and quite docile! If this was a raccoon, I'd be saying something quite different.

They're actually not that dangerous. They are typically not aggressive and would rather play dead than engage in a confrontation. People think they're dangerous because their defense is to act scary so you'll leave them alone.

Educate yourself, they are very helpful they are referred to as the Sanitation Engineers. They are more bluff than aggressive it's the only protection they have. Google them! Find out for yourself.

FYI.....My sweet cat spent a week at the vets after a possum attack. She has deep bites in the head one eye wont open all the way . 2 very bad chest wounds. After a week of hydrotherapy and antibiotics she got to come home but the vet said she will probably have some brain damage because of the depth of the head wound and that she is very lucky to be alive. So, LAUGH IT UP because that possum will definitely be back.

I just feel bad that the cat has to eat outside instead of being indoors where it belongs. Cats shouldn't be allowed to roam free outside. They can cause too much destruction to the local wildlife, and there are too many things that can hurt or kill them. They should be kept inside, safe and warm.

Years ago, my mother was in the habit of feeding a feral cat -- until the cat tangled with a opossum and got her belly ripped open. It was a terrible, lingering death. If you put out food, the wild animals will come. We have seen opossums, raccoons, skunks, groundhogs, hawks, coyotes and foxes in our suburban Ohio neighborhood. Would you really want your family pet to get into a fight with one of these?

You took a chance on your pets life to get photos of your neglect .....the kitty needed you . The fact the opossum could have easily killed your family member who depends on you while you stood by .....it is just very hard to imagine taking a risk over a love ones safety and health . The physical harm that could have happened is not worth any photo ....not to mention opossums can carry diseases and sharing food could make the kitty very sick or die from just the opossum being a carrier of a disease and having eaten food that had the opossum saliva on it .....wash that bowl very good before feeding kitty again (and not the opossum) . The opossum can find his food elsewhere. ....there is a very good reason they live in the woods and they need to know your going to protect your kitty from now on. I use to have opossum trouble and raccoons when I lived near a wooded area getting after my cats dish ....the opossum got pretty brave but when I got the broom out they did not stay .

It is very hard for me to imagine a loving pet owner willing to have their family member in harms way for photos . Possums can not only easily kill a domestic pet but they can also carry many diseases. I know it is fun sometimes to pick fun at a pets expense to see their reactions but you should always keep in mind their safety and health ....be more mindful of those that love and depend on you.

We have two possums that routinely try to eat out outdoor cat's food. I now feed outdoor kitty indoors and the possums have gone away, probably to another house to find food.

Yes, domestic cats do not need to go out at all. They are not wild animals and they get stolen, hurt or killed. If you love your pet, keep them inside. Any other vet will tell you the same.

So many possum “experts” here calling strangers nasty names. Education goes a long way, folks. Opossum pose no real danger to cats or people. They don’t usually attack, nor do they carry rabies. They can and do coexist peacefully with outdoor cats. The attitudes many commenters are expressing are based on serious misinformation, lack of fact-finding and, possibly, appearance — all of which are dangerous for these harmless creatures.

I want to know why you feed your cat outside when there is snow on the ground. Are you really that cruel? After all filming what looks like two cute animals also over one dish of food and not seeing the hiss of the possum is mean enough, you have to look in the eyes of your cat and see pain. So yes I guess you are clueless and like to torch- er animals.

Opossums carry diseases such as leptospirosis, tuberculosis, relapsing fever, tularemia, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, trichomoniasis, and Chagas disease. They may also be infested with fleas, ticks, mites, and lice. Opossums are hosts for cat and dog fleas, especially in urban environments.

You should not feed your cats/dogs outside, it will attract wild critters and create a dependance on food that is not meant for them as well as upset your pets when their food is stolen.....

A big male Maine C**n cat would tear that possum to pieces, but that small cat was scared and possums are disgusting stupid animals that have big teeth and could have really hurt that cat. However, that possum would have never been able to catch the cat. Don't downplay a cat's fighting ability. A bad tempered cat is a match for most animals many times their size. Cats also have big nasty teeth and they have something else--claws and lightning speed. They ain't bunny rabbits even though they might look soft and sweet. My daughter was a humane officer and she has always said, I would rather tackle a big dog than a pissed off cat.

I'm sorry, I'm an animal lover, and that is why I shoot the possums that get into my yard. They can kill a medium sized dog and they carry many diseases. Also, their poop is delicious to dogs and also disease ridden. Thank God the cat wasn't attacked.

If that cat wasn't so fussy about food, it would see that a possum is just a big rodent and good for at least four good cat meals and attack, attack, attack. But no, spoiled to the hairs on its chinny chin chin. Sad.

Poor cat, looks like mine and so desperate to loose his food. I would have helped him and avoid any danger to my beloved animal, good that it did't end badly.

The possum might look small to you but it's the same size as the cat and has some pretty wicked claws. It's probably a good thing the cat didn't try to take it on. Also the cat's expression is just gold.

Why are you feeding your cat outside? It's clearly cold and has been snowing, especially considering there are wild animals about. Grow a brain.

Hey look! A cat owner documenting how he totally useless and unfeeling he is. This is a scared and upset cat, looking to you his owner for help. And you... did... nothing... Well done. You're useless.

The poor cat, you could at least feed the possum somewhere else, well away from the cat preferably !!

I have no idea why every comment that's like this is getting downvoted. Good for you protecting your dear pet and taking on a possum with just a broom!

Don't'cha know how many sharp little teeth possums have? They scare the beejesus outta me, my dachshund cornered one, one dark night and it ended with the whole neighborhood coming out to see what was happening...! Thankfully just a whole lot of screaming, barking and hissing, no blood was spilled. I consider ourselves LUCKY...!!

Umm... help your cat! Possums are pests. Once they find food sources, they won't go away and will get aggressive. It won't be so cute when that possum scratches up that cute kitty

Poor cat. Maybe it's time to feed the cat inside, possums can be very nasty.

Cats should never be outside at all anyway. The are domesticated creatures.

Thank God the cat wasn't attacked.

that's b******t. Leave them alone. Stop shooting animals because we've moved our homes into their domain and now we expect them as wild animals to conform to our society which they don't even understand. You're not an animal lover you're an animal killer.
