I read her story. She's amazingly brave to break the horrible tradition. Girls as young as 11 would often be wed with strangers in exchange for a cow or something. Child marriage in my country is a real issue, the legal age for female to marry is 16, which is too young.

earringmut - amnesia due to sexual trauma is extremely common. I had amnesia about whole parts of my childhood for years because of the sexual abuse I experienced from my grandfather from the age of 4. It's because as children we dissociate from our bodies and go off somewhere else in our heads to escape the trauma. So the memories do not form properly. but the traumatic memory in the body stays ,and very often causes physical illness as well as the expected mental health problems, that we do not understand until the memories come back. Amnesia can happen to adults who are raped in an abducted/kidnaped situation or domestic abuse /enslavement situation as well, it's a very common coping mechanism. And of course child marriage is child rape/abuse. So I"m not surprised to hear that about the person you met.

I met an adult child bride. It was such a messed up "lifestyle" that she has tramma induced amnesia. I believe that is the definition of FUAR.

This has nothing to do with the judgement of the west. The change was implemented by a Malawi chief, not some outside force.

You can't compare circumcision to female genital mutilation. Female circumcision is done when the girl is adolescent and fully cognizant of what's going on (i.e. she can feel and remember it). Number 2, I've never met a circumcised man who couldn't function sexually (but if so there is Viagra). Circumcise a woman and you've taken away all her sexual sensation. And yes, you can be against both. I am against all forms of genital mutilation. I am against eating dogs and pigs equally. I hope that's clear.

We've restricted marriage to adulthood because we've understood that children cannot give consent. Furthermore, the child marriage mentioned here is not two children marrying each other, but preteen girls married off to middle aged men and getting raped by them

The issue isn’t so much 14 year olds marrying each other (although that can be an issue as it interrupts young people’s educations) but 14 year girls being forced to marry men more than twice their age.
