We are often bombarded with fear-mongering and shocking headlines that make us feel that the world is falling apart.
However, while it’s important to report on problems and issues, I believe there is so much good in this world that it needs to be found and promoted just as widely.
Because of that, I started The Happy Broadcast. It's an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. Also, this year, I’ve illustrated even more happy news than in 2018.
We need more positive news to acknowledge that the world is actually getting better little by little.

When I'm working on The Happy Broadcast, I try to pick news that has an international appeal and touches themes like animal rights, climate change and science. News that shows how much we’re progressing on many fronts despite being often bombarded with few-mongering headlines.
I think there are many reasons why negative news is dominating the media. It's like a sudden disaster a, it's more compelling than, for example, little improvements. Bad things can happen quickly, but good things aren’t built in a day, and as they unfold, they're out of sync with the news cycle.
As humans, we have this thing called “negative bias” that make us respond quicker to bad or dangerous situations. Nowadays, this bias is getting in the way of our happiness and well-being, and even our productivity because most of the narrative surrounding us (print, online or mobile) is that the “world is ending".
I think we should find a balance between negative and positive news. From politics to climate change and economy, negative and bad news surrounds us everywhere we go. A potential solution could be to limit the amount of bad news, basically slow down our personal news cycle, adding some positive news to our “news diet” to make sure that our outlook on the world is more optimistic. Also, it's very important to invest time to deal with misinformation and the reliability of news sources.
AlphaPuck, you must not know anything about Capitalism. As a private entity, YouTube can do whatever it pleases. If it wanted to only post hate speech it could. If it wanted to be only cat videos it could. The government cannot tell YouTube how to run a business. As a publicly traded company, the SEC requires it to follow GAAP principals but nothing more.

This isn't actually that good. A lot of these channels aren't white supremacist channels or inspiring hate speech. A lot of them are actually history and educational channels that have been automatically removed because they're discussing sensitive topics. The software that YouTube uses to remove channels is really bad and hurts more innocents than people who deserve to be kicked.
It's a blow for the white supremacists but it's also a blow for human rights in general. People need to be more careful of what they wish for because it could just as easily be them and their ideas on the chopping block. The answer to bad speech is good speech not less speech.

Free speech is always a tricky subject. True believers of free speech will protect the rights of everyone, even racists, to say what they have to say. Allowing someone to speak their mind isn't condoning the ideas, but letting those ideas be expressed and discussed does help society. In an ideal situation alternative points of view get shared as well and a healthy discussion happens.
Free speech does NOT mean that anyone is required to give you a platform.

Not a fan of this one, if you believe in free speech, then you believe in free speech. Nothing should be suppressed, if you don't like something, don't watch or listen to it. Before long YouTube will turn into a regular outlet for big cooperate news and propaganda just like terrestrial TV, and that was what made YouTube a success in the first place, it was normal people sharing their own thoughts. Don't let big brother claim all our freedoms in the name of censorship.
I don't think you understand the concept of free speech. Free speech means the government cannot imprison you for your political opinions, it doesn't mean private companies can't set their own rules and ban users who don't meet up with those rules. Like in school when teachers say you're not allowed to swear; they're not restricting your free speech, but telling you what the guidelines for that community is and you need to follow them in order to be a member of that community. Likewise YouTube as a private company is allowed to set up its rules and you're expected to follow them. YouTube can ban nazi shit and hate speech and it has nothing to do with freedom of speech.

I know YouTube is a private company, however its traded on the public market; I understand that it may not be something we all want to hear (so don't look it up), but how are they restricting the right to freedom of speech? Censorship is not good news. You need to have open debates and access to content if you plan to fight it. Daylight is the best antidote for hate. Censoring ideology just legitimizes its victim status and sends it underground where it grows, unchecked by intelligent debate.

I do not advocate for white supremacy but free speech is free speech. The entire concept of free speech is to protect speech that we do not like, speech we all agree with does not need protecting. Bad or evil ideas die when exposed. The proper response to speech you do not like is to present a better argument, not silence it.

This sounds good, but can be a very slippery slope if one does not go by the law strictly and instead imposes restrictions that would simply fall into freedom of speech. Who is it that will determine what is acceptable and what is not? Will it eventually lead to promotion of propaganda rather than being a platform for all law abiding individuals?
How is this progress? We're now one step closer to having a Ministry of thought, and do we really want YouTube to decide what is OK to talk about and what not? You don't solve hate by turning a blind eye, it's a long and painful process that we will have to go through one way or another. I understand that trying to convince hate preachers is like talking to a wall, but banning them is descending to the same level and creating an opportunity for them to have tighter communities, which will be more difficult to find... at least now we know where they are. We have a challenge as a society, are we really going to cower away and pretend that that part of the world doesn't exist??

The problem is that they are not just banning these channels, they are banning or demonetizing good people, right winged and conservative videos which are falsely being labeled as "hate speech". What constitutes as hate speech can be awfully subjective and is at the mercy of who ever is the last human to check on the bot's results when someone calls out unfair and unnecessary punishments. They probably need a more politically diverse cast to make these final decisions and it should be fine, unless it's someone unironically calling for the eradication of all blacks, whites, jews, christians and so on then there is not much room for doubt. lol

This isn't "good news". It's news that supports censorship and oppression. What it means, is that white supremacists will band together in small private cells where they are completely secluded from outside influence. That means they are more likely to do stupid stuff and act out their extremism and commit terror. Google/YouTube is actually responsible for that by way of pushing them off their platform. That's not good news. That's news on how a freedom, the freedom of speech, is being destroyed for profit, while creating a more dangerous world in the process. Especially considering how Google is being completely biased on the matter, and not removing Extreme Left Wing groups, or extremely racist groups of other colours (they actually exist). Unfortunately, youtube is defining "white supremacy" and "hate speech" as anything that isn't Liberal Democrat-speak.
I don't understand how we go to the point where targeting specifically "white supremacist" content does not outrage everyone. I would prefer much less censorship in the first place, but what worries me as much as overt censorship, is asymmetry. What about promoting Marxism-leninism, promoting Bolshevism? Since when are those acceptable? Is it because this kind of hate is targeted against middle-class (in practice, because upper-class only in theory)? Is it because in practice in Europe and USA much of this middle class will be white conservative families? I don't like where this situation is going, I do not find censorship good news - it seems like it is smuggled among a lot of ecological and social good news, while on it's own is Orwellian.

What about any other race supremacy? While, yes, this is great news, if a minority said what was said in the white supremacist’s videos, but directed at white people, would anyone care?
This could be good and bad. Any violent speech or speech about any human being more entitled than another should be banned. This should not be limited to white supremacy, examples that should included Are men say women don’t deserve soMething or deserve physical violence, or if religious beliefs proclaim the non believers should be physically punished either through violence or deprecation of basic necessities.
