We are often bombarded with fear-mongering and shocking headlines that make us feel that the world is falling apart.

However, while it’s important to report on problems and issues, I believe there is so much good in this world that it needs to be found and promoted just as widely.

Because of that, I started The Happy Broadcast. It's an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. Also, this year, I’ve illustrated even more happy news than in 2018.

We need more positive news to acknowledge that the world is actually getting better little by little.

More info: Instagram

When I'm working on The Happy Broadcast, I try to pick news that has an international appeal and touches themes like animal rights, climate change and science. News that shows how much we’re progressing on many fronts despite being often bombarded with few-mongering headlines.

I am so happy for their victory, but just find it bonkers that an indigenous tribe had to fight a legal battle to protect their land in the first place.

I think there are many reasons why negative news is dominating the media. It's like a sudden disaster a, it's more compelling than, for example, little improvements. Bad things can happen quickly, but good things aren’t built in a day, and as they unfold, they're out of sync with the news cycle.

As humans, we have this thing called “negative bias” that make us respond quicker to bad or dangerous situations. Nowadays, this bias is getting in the way of our happiness and well-being, and even our productivity because most of the narrative surrounding us (print, online or mobile) is that the “world is ending".

I think we should find a balance between negative and positive news. From politics to climate change and economy, negative and bad news surrounds us everywhere we go. A potential solution could be to limit the amount of bad news, basically slow down our personal news cycle, adding some positive news to our “news diet” to make sure that our outlook on the world is more optimistic. Also, it's very important to invest time to deal with misinformation and the reliability of news sources.

Hm, I think Sweden must have forgot to apply then. We dont have stray dogs, at least for decades. Any lost dog gets collected, if no owner is found it gets adopted via Animal Protection. I have seen one or two lost dogs, where we found the owner, but never a genuine stray.

I have a rescue from our local animal shelter who was just 2.5 months old when I got him. Adoption included microchipping and neutering. Added bonus: he was crate trained before I got him too. Another added bonus: they thoroughly vetted him before I got him and there was complete disclosure of all medical conditions that he had and may develop within 5 years. We've been together for a wonderful 13 years now and his only problem is arthritis

The pet stores have already found a way around this great initiative. They just lie, make up shelters, charge through the roof for "purebred rescues", and keep up with their general sh*tty behavior. It IS a great initiative, but it needs a LOT of oversight to be successful.

I still don't think this is right. No store should be selling dogs, cats or rabbits. It saddens me that some people have no respect or caring for animals and would see this as an opportunity to do heaven knows what to these rescue animals, Does not bare thinking about.

JJM, I assume that the pets belong to the shelters, not to the stores which exhibit them, and are therefore adopted from shelters, not sold by stores.

The problem is somebody these puppy mills come up with fake rescues, to still be able to sell their puppies. There are investigative studies out there, it's a good rule of thumb is if a puppy costs more than a couple hundred it's not from a rescue.

YES!! YAY!! Now let’s start fining people who don’t spay/neuter, and BAN sales on kittens & puppies online!!! (gumtree in the u.k. allows this, and these awful people force their cats to have kittens year after year!) I’ve volunteered for no-kill shelters and it’s heartbreaking. I’ve had a dozen kittens clinging to me within minutes of my arrival. This is unacceptable for “developed” countries. We domesticated them, they’re our responsibility.

This is actually potentially dangerous. I definitely think breeders should have to register and be regulated. But responsible breeders can actually do wonderful things for the continuation of breed health. They do a lot to help lengthen and improve the life of the dogs they breed. I also think that there are cases where a purebred dog is just the best fit for some families. They have different care needs, and more importantly, different pray drives. I think for families with young children and such it is very important to know what to expect from a dog. As someone who personally has pretty severe dog allergies, I had to be very sure my dog wouldn't cause me to have a reaction. He is the light of my life, and I have seen my depression and anxiety improve immensely because of him.

I did extensive reaserch regarding the breeder I purchased him from, and I truly admire their dedication to the wellbeing of their puppies and parents. Understand that good breeders are few and far in between, but those who are still out there do wonderful work to protect the health of dogs. Rescues do just as much good, of course. I’ve fostered 2 dogs and 10 cats, and I know how important rescue organizations are. I have four rescues at home, and I adore them, but when it comes to my puppy- there isn’t a way he could be more perfect for me; his breed couldn’t be more perfect for me. I believe in adoption, but making it the only option is a lot like telling people they can no longer have children, but must instead adopt: it just doesn’t fit all life styles, and the good it does only lasts so long. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

What is meant to happen to puppies born in a good home? Are they meant to become rescue dogs just to be adopted? Most dogs and cats are born in homes not necessarily "farms". Cats and dogs give us a lot of happiness. This is mass birth control. It's awesome to adopt a rescue animal but why is it necessarily not good to adopt a kitten or puppy locally and they can move from one home environment to another.

You still pay the rescue shelter and whilst it gets called adoption to all intents and purposes you're buying. My most recent rescue cost me £175.00 to adopt. I do appreciate the point that you are making but there is also the problem that there are people who won't value something they get for free. The world is a mucked up and there are a lot of people who shouldn't have a pet regardless.

If you have more skill in the task, you get paid more, if you have less you get paid less. Plain and simple (yet I know it is more difficult to prove wrong-doing that way too)

Although the use of solar panels is green, many solar panel manufacturing processes are not. To create a solar panel, caustic materials will emit greenhouse gases.
