I’m Honestly Fed Up With All The Bad News, So I Illustrated 50 Of The Best Ones From 2019
We are often bombarded with fear-mongering and shocking headlines that make us feel that the world is falling apart.
However, while it’s important to report on problems and issues, I believe there is so much good in this world that it needs to be found and promoted just as widely.
Because of that, I started The Happy Broadcast. It's an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. Also, this year, I’ve illustrated even more happy news than in 2018.
We need more positive news to acknowledge that the world is actually getting better little by little.

When I'm working on The Happy Broadcast, I try to pick news that has an international appeal and touches themes like animal rights, climate change and science. News that shows how much we’re progressing on many fronts despite being often bombarded with few-mongering headlines.
I am so happy for their victory, but just find it bonkers that an indigenous tribe had to fight a legal battle to protect their land in the first place.
I think there are many reasons why negative news is dominating the media. It's like a sudden disaster a, it's more compelling than, for example, little improvements. Bad things can happen quickly, but good things aren’t built in a day, and as they unfold, they're out of sync with the news cycle.
As humans, we have this thing called “negative bias” that make us respond quicker to bad or dangerous situations. Nowadays, this bias is getting in the way of our happiness and well-being, and even our productivity because most of the narrative surrounding us (print, online or mobile) is that the “world is ending".
This is a GREAT idea! And the leftover leaves can be burnt afterwards! WINNING!
Can't you also cook in banana leaves? Like tamales cooked in corn husks?
Load More Replies...Is this just one particular Supermarket or a whole franchise because I'm in Thailand Supermarkets around 3 times every week over the past year and I've NEVER seen this before.... It is however a popular trend in village local markets, only because it's cheaper
It's the Rimping chain and it's a "greenwashing" stunt to make rich Farang feel nice and warm about their purchases.
Load More Replies...But in China plastic package is still largely used in supermarket. We know it is not good for environment, but few people really take it seriously! What a shame! I do hope many Chinese can totally change their mind and do sth for the ecosystem.
Sadly a PR stunt for a few. You are more likely to see a single banana wrapped in plastic than anything wrapped in a banana leaf. Add to that shrink-wrapped coconuts and other fruit and vegetables that don't need such wrappings.
Yep. I've seen single bananas, wrapped in plastic with a Styrofoam backing at 7-11s in Thailand.
Load More Replies...We should do this in our town, rn we use paper bags since we banned plastic but this sounds AWESOME!
Doesn't really hurt them to trim a few leaves off. It's a traditional food wrapper in Asia. Unfortunately the norm is plastic bags.
Load More Replies...When I was in Thailand around August, I remember when I'm at the supermarket in every Wednesday if I'm not wrong they wont give any plastic so I put my thing directly in my bag.I always bought bread only tho so I dont mind xD and yeah after knowing that I always bring a big bag and not totebag. And I began to not use plastic even its not wednesday, until now I'm in Indonesia. I refuse using pastics if its not necessary.
Wonderful idea. When I went shopping in a Thai market many years ago you had to bring your own bags for EVERYTHING!
How good is this, reverting to the original wrapping there was never a need for plastic wrapping or bags.
This is great, because banana trees flower and bear fruit only once, and the tree is lopped when the fruit is harvested..
Thank you Thailand! Our world needs to have more Eco-conscience folks like you!
Excellent, where there are no banana leaves, lets find an alternative for packaging !!!
I love this idea because I have a real thing about the unnecessary use of plastic 💚
also most asian countries would rather spend less on the organic materials anyway, everyone should do this
This is a bit of "greenwashing" done by one expensive chain to impress their Farang (foreign) customers. Plastic packaging is the norm in Thailand.
I'm more impressed with these other countries are doing more things than America. We should be ashamed of ourselves.
Great idea unless, like me, you are allergic to bananas and all things banana!
I now use bags I get from Gogooda, don't have a source for banana leaves--- but absolutely no plastic bags!
This is less than a hand full of stores. - Most stores will throw a huge pile of straws into your plastic bag. along with your load of plastic water bottles that you have to buy because main water is not drinkable. . The streets are overflowing with plastic trash, . but yes, these few use leaves.
This is in maybe a hand full of stores. Every other store in thailand throws a hand full of plastic straws straws in your plastic bag to go along with your plastic containers. and all the plastic water bottles that are used because tap water is not drinkable. - But yes, happy that three shops use leaves.
That's something I'd like to see happen in North America too. We know we should be doing more to generate less waste going into landfills here.
our county banned plastic bags..Seattle banned plastic straws...its a start!
Yes, and if discarded, those leaves just go back to nature. This is the problem in Bhutan. They used to use natural materials for wrapping and just discarded it on the road. Now that they use plastic, they have to have a giant anti littering campaign to tell them not to discard plastic on the road.
Yes, I heard of this great idea,it's a terrific beginning for more similar ideas, bravo !!!
Oh my goodness! Bring those leaves to US before we drown in plastics!
This is brilliant, coming from a 3rd world country! 1st world countries must follow suit!!!
A lot of things repeat themselves...like this. Not the banana leaves, but pre-plastic.
I remember when I was a little girl that we have a reusable shopping bag. We should all go back to this practice....
I lived in Thailand 30 years ago and plastic was everywhere, littering all the streets. People sold fresh food at markets in little plastic bags. But many years before plastic they used banana leaves. Then people started tossing plastic on the ground just like they did the banana leaves. A return to banana leaves can be a great thing for Thailand.
I to never get plastic here,"Mai ow tung!" (don't want bag) is one of my most often used phrases. It's an uphill battle. Plastic trash is still everywhere.
Load More Replies...Not too many banana trees in New Mexico, but still a great idea! I already reuse my straws and plastic bags.
There's also a new produce preservative made from avocado leftovers. I recall the name was a clever pun, but darned if I can remember it now.
I don't give a sh!t about their plastic!!! Now if they'd outlaw the Thailand dog meat trade, I'd be happy! https://www.veganlifemag.com/the-fight-to-end-the-dog-meat-trade/

Load More Replies...I think we should find a balance between negative and positive news. From politics to climate change and economy, negative and bad news surrounds us everywhere we go. A potential solution could be to limit the amount of bad news, basically slow down our personal news cycle, adding some positive news to our “news diet” to make sure that our outlook on the world is more optimistic. Also, it's very important to invest time to deal with misinformation and the reliability of news sources.
Hm, I think Sweden must have forgot to apply then. We dont have stray dogs, at least for decades. Any lost dog gets collected, if no owner is found it gets adopted via Animal Protection. I have seen one or two lost dogs, where we found the owner, but never a genuine stray.
SOOOO not against this! But....shouldn't it be equal pay for equal skill? (meaning, no race, gender, age, or any discrimination at all!) If you have more skill in the task, you get paid more, if you have less you get paid less. Plain and simple (yet I know it is more difficult to prove wrong-doing that way too)
Nairobi has a baby elephant orphanage. So I guess not. Of course, if they are brought up in the orphanage, which is by Nairobi National Park, then they are not sold to a zoo or circus.
This is definitely a good thing, but be careful to remember that fortnite is known for an especially toxic crunch culture. Employees are expected to work insane hours with no pay. Planting forests is good, but he should also be held responsible for the unfair and harmful working conditions his company creates.
The rabid, right-wingers still spewing their nonsense that renewables will drive prices up so high no one will be able to have electricity will not be noticing this development. The belief disconfirmation paradigm is too powerful for some people to overcome.
Glad to see them come back. Sad that they died out there in the first place.
This is nice, but it would be better if children being educated wasn’t contingent on their parents paying any sort of fee.

Although the use of solar panels is green, many solar panel manufacturing processes are not. To create a solar panel, caustic materials will emit greenhouse gases. Plus less than 11% of each panel has salvageable metals so they're not very recyclable once they're usable life has expired. Most people aren't aware that the 'green' alternatives often aren't.
Never understood the appeal of fur anyways. Fake fur seems to have the same affect for me than real fur, so I don't really seem the point of killing animals for it.
By then all elephants will be dead, cause hey, they have to sell before it's banned.
These kids are the future of humanity. I hope they make it. I hope their future is not as bleak as it seems now.

We'll still have to worry about those inconsiderate 101 year old chain smokers though.
Cool! Why don't we hear more about all of these positive things in our regular news sources?
People are asking why this matters, here's why: Women are still getting fewer opportunities to direct movies, and even if there would be women who could make amazing movies, they're sidelined by some of the male directors that are really mediocre and produce cheap cash grab movies.

I am glad to see we are doing something, but honestly we have a long way to go.
I try to bring my own bags or use paper at all costs. I'd even be ok with stores saving their big boxes and letting me carry my groceries in those so I can just recycle the box when I get home. Plastic bags drive me CRAZY!!!
Menstrual equality.... I equally menstruate...can somebody explain?? 🤔
My plans for tomorrow have been decided!! I will tell you how it went!
But is it used ? You don't hear about these so called environmental breakthroughs
It is necessary, because often private investors will support male entrepreneurs over female entrepreneurs. This happens mostly due to people in power currently being predominantly male and as many studies have proven, men are much less likely to believe that women are capable of success in a serious work environment. This can be ascribed to both deliberate and subconscious sexism. It's the same argument for why people of ethnicities other than caucasian should be given benefits that equalize the playing field. A group in power will not willingly give over their own power.
Would that mess with fishes' electric current sense? (Sounds crazy but look it up it's a real thing)
Even though I don't like Billie's music, that is a really thoughtful thing to do. Good on her.
Unfortunately not suitable for everyone. Myself and my brother could not live off a plant based diet. I have reactions to a lot of fruit and veg, I get itchy tongue, gums, throat, roof of my mouth and lips. My brother has a salicylate intolerance and gets quite sick eating many fruits and veg.

And I'm glad that I read it yesterday when there were over 100 posts and not just the 50 that are left now...
Load More Replies...Posts like these give me faith in humanity. Don't get me wrong, it's important to be informed about world issues, but it's nice to escape that every once in a while and know how far we've come.
Life is calmer when people take care of their little spheres in the world and stop obsessing about the whole world. People who mire themselves in the world's problems start to see people as the enemy.
Load More Replies...WOW!!!! This may be the best boredpanda post EVER!!!! Boredpanda needs to post more like this.
Thank you. I really needed this. My faith in this world and humanity has been at an all time low lately. We all could do with more good news in the world.
quick share these for when they suddenly don't exist anymore

Load More Replies...This is a great post and many of these are amazing things, the problem is that the more we keep people alive and the longer they live the bigger the population gets which isn't sustainable. So it's a double edged sword. It's a catch-22.
Really fun, informative, and feel-good post. Needed this today.
Thank you, these are great. I would love to have each meme linked to a reliable source so I can happily spread them around with the source link! What you think??
Thank you very much to make me happy today! Btw, #39 and #46 are the same...
It's good to see someone wanting to spread good news! Sad that so many people had to add negative comments to many of them, kinda missed the point didn't they?
This is the most amazing post I read in the last few years!! Thank you for gathering such valuable content and making such beautiful, interesting illustrations!! Love the way each pic is designed. Please make it a video and I'm sure many will watch it.
What about stop complaining about bad news, and get to work to fix what's bad in the world; then, there would be only good news to report. Get involved.
Thanks Bored Panda, much good news, also, great information !!!

When I read these good news headlines, it helps me realize that we are making progress. Yes, there's a lot of bad news in the world, but good news is just as plentiful when we look for it. Good news is healing. I'm sharing this on all my social media pages!
Lifted me ... made me smile. Thank you for sharing such great news.
Best news I've read in a long time. Thank you this has given me hope for the future and made me happy.
Love the illustrations and news they represent. Would like to have a link to the original news story for reference plz
Thank you Mario. A good effort was put into this and it was very interesting. Just a pity our world is so distorted that these things happen once in a blue moon. We can have the world be mostly fantastic and turn things around. But we have to withdraw from bank issued money. This is imperative if we want peace in the world and in our lives because banksters will bleed you dry. Yes even you.
Awesome post -- I agree that there's WAY too much negative bias on the internet. One of my favorite pieces of "good news" from this year is that the European Investment Bank, the world's largest multilateral lender, recently announced that it will stop funding fossil fuel projects by 2021 and divert those funds to renewables instead. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-climate-europe-eib-idUSKBN1XO2OS
I love it, now this should inspire all countries to follow, not just one!
Thank you! If we keep this up maybe the future generations will actually have a planet
There's been a ton of great news lately though, communists got BTFO'd in a lot of western countries, the US economy is doing great, brexit is finally going to go through without impedance. Overall SJW's are losing and the people are regaining some of their power.
This made me feel good!! I do wish I hadn't read some of the comments though. Just be happy with the good stuff!!
That was a tonic. I am going to save it to look at when I get down about the state of the planet.
This should be printed and bound into a children’s book annually! I would totally buy it for my nieces and nephews
Reading this just made me feel sadder! How can homo sapiens have developed so much technology and yet remain so stupid! So sad...
Thank you sooooo much. I bet there are plenty more of these positive news. If we could concentrate on those instead of bad news, scandals, fake news and all the bs we are exposed to everyday, the world would be a better place. I applaud your dedication.
This was ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. Thank you so much for taking the time to put together and share this positive news with the rest of us.
Nice list of happy events except don't see why Taiwan would be happy about joining the morally depraved countries that support homosexuality.
I have been plagued with depression for weeks. Blah. I cry every morning. This morning, it was finally about something good. Thanks Bored Panda for making this the top story in my email.
When you are bombarded with stories of decline, loss, and hopelessness it is easy to think "Why bother" - this is why we should bother! Perhaps the news channels should take a leaf out of Mauro Gatti's post and throw us a sucess story once and a while. Thank you
I've been reading a lot of pessimistic stuff lately, so this really helped me out. Thanks. :)

It’s so sad to see the differences between parts of the world-some make fake islands for flora and fauna while some are getting electricity. 3. People are awful. I am sad to see the us very low on the list of contributions. We as a people need to start to fight again for the rights of our children, grandchildren, etc. We expect them to respect us, when we do not have any respect ourselves. Let us make 2020 a year where there is more good news than bad.
