Does eating an apple a day really keep the doctor away? What about lightning striking in the same place more than twice if it is made out of certain material? These questions arise when someone throws you one of the good old sayings to make a certain point or just to show some general domestic wisdom. But do they actually make sense?

Reddit users on their popular group r/AskReddit with over 32.7m members decided to actually debunk all of the sayings that we have been hearing so often. One of the community members, u/OptionsTrader14, dropped the question ‘What popular sayings are actually bulls***?’ Bored Panda selected the best answers so you can vote for your favorites.

40 Popular Sayings Getting Roasted By People Online For Being False "What does not kill you makes you stronger."

Statistically that which almost kills you leaves you weaker, with PTSD, and medical bills.

On a brighter note, whatever kills you, makes you dead.

It also suggests that if you DO die, you are/were weak. Yeah, go ahead and blame someone for being "too weak" to survive cancer, severe depression, or being kidnapped.

It's not about the survival of the fittest. Ignore the death comment. It's about what makes you stronger until then. That's what truly makes you stronger. The strength you get from such things. For those that did die they are not weak it's just a hell lot more complicated.

The more I learn about mental health, the more clearly I see how BS this statement is. Trauma - whether full-blown PTSD or the more "garden-variety" kind that leaves you with anxiety, trust issues, etc - leaves you with issues that can take years of therapy just to bring you back to normal. The only "stronger" anywhere in that comes from the benefit that years of therapy can have on your ability to understand your own emotions etc, something that you could have done without the inciting events. And of course physical issues are the same, maybe you got that hip replaced but you're going to have recurring issues with it your entire life.

It will take years of therapy. If you find a good therapist. Not too far. Who is affordable. A lot of people with PTSD and similar issues spend years in wrong treatment, causing just as much damage as the trauma itself. I gave up on therapy eventually. I prefer Bored Panda. 😜

If this were true, it would imply that literally everything that doesn't kill you will make you stronger. Including not only traumatic events, but also stuff like eating potato chips all day or drinking beer. It can be argued that those don't count because they do kill you, only slowly -- except that so does trauma.

My son has a severe bleeding disorder. I've watched him die about 25 times, seen more blood than anyone should ever see and hospitalized hundreds. What doesn't kill you may make you stronger but it can also lead to severe ptsd. I wouldn't wish what we've been through on anyone. Did this as a single parent, his sister, him and i all suffer from terrible anxiety and ptsd.

This is one of many excerpts from Nietzche’s classic and historically important novel “Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for Everyone and No One.” So many passages from that work got taken out of context, appropriated for other aims and twisted beyond all recognition. The interested reader can dive into this online for more detail.

This was my quote in my graduation yearbook. This saying isn't just about delibating diseases it's about adversity. It's about mental and emotional and even some physical problems but look at it for what it is...adversity. Even if it's a step, a hug or a session it is something! Death is inevitable. It's about what you do that make you stronger.

'Killing' in this context is not necessarily literal. If you have PTSD and manage to overcome it, it hasn't 'killed' you and you're bound to come out stronger. Hardship is, unfortunately, how we grow as human beings. So Nietzsche made good a point IMHO.

Are you aware how insanely rare it is for someone to get over PTSD? In 99% of cases you have a traumatic event and you come out with PTSD instead of dead, you are NOT stronger than you were; PTSD is one of the most debilitating mental illnesses there is. The lucky ones only end up with garden-variety anxiety or recurring dreams, neither of which makes them stronger, either. The quote in this context is pure BS said by someone who does not understand trauma.

40 Popular Sayings Getting Roasted By People Online For Being False 'Money can't buy happiness'.

The saying itself is true enough - it's about greed and it is meant to mean that however much wealth you have you can't buy your way to happiness. Being a millionaire, or a billionaire won't necessarily make you happy.

However, people badly misuse it almost as a refrain for those who are destitute - as if they don't deserve any more and it won't make them happy. It's that which is utter bulls***.

Because, being able to afford healthcare, to feed your family, a roof over your head and to not everyday have a gnawing, desperate anxiety and unending stress about whether you can afford to live each week will make someone a f***-ton happier than the alternative. And that's nothing to do with greed.

This is true in some ways - if someone leaves you because you're depressed, or poor ,or struggle with anything else that isn't your fault; just to come back when they can get something from you, they suck. If you struggle in a way that affects them, like anger issues that mean you're abusive, they are completely right to leave you, wait until you got therapy and gotten well enough to be around, and then come back if they want to.

I think this one is more about being manipulated then being kind. If my husband does the dishes without being prompted, he wants something I would normally say no to. If my oldest sister calls me and starts talking about how cool my knitting is, she usually wants me to make her something. The flattery is nice but it shouldn't be used to manipulate me into doing something.
