Dog Spends Entire Life Locked Up In Basement, Can’t Hold Her Excitement To See The World
Meet B.B., a puppy mill poodle who had spent all of her life locked in a tiny cage in the basement. The mill in North Carolina was raided by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) last September. Animal workers could tell the doggie was bred over and over again. “She was very tiny, and she looked like this helpless creature,” Jessica Lauginiger, animal crimes manager at HSUS, told The Dodo.
B.B. was taken to Cabarrus Animal Hospital, where she caught the attention of Brenda Tortoreo, who worked there as a receptionist. “B.B. was in a corner,” Tortoreo told The Dodo. “She looked pitiful. She was scared to death… And I said, ‘That’s the one I’m going to take home.’”
But, having spent all her life in a tiny cage, the doggie seemed confused at Tortoreo’s place. “I put B.B. down on the floor, and she kept going in circles — not running, but walking,” Tortoreo said. “I guess that’s all she knew to do.”
“She never knew what sun was,” Tortoreo said. “She didn’t know what grass was, and she was terrified of it.”
Little by little, the pooch got accustomed. “She runs around the house,” Tortoreo said. “She’s really come out of her shell. She’s my little princess.”

Share on FacebookPeople who hurt others are disgusting. But I'd like to think there is a special place in hell for those who hurt animals, children, the elderly, and the disabled.
Totally agree. When I tell people that there should be automatic death penalty for people who abuse or kill the four you mention they think I am nuts. Sorry those four categories are the ones that disturb me the most.

Animal abuse is the worst form of inhumanity. Those animals are here, asking for nothing and they get punished for no reason. Look at B.B., she seems like the sweetest dog and she has gone through so much trauma just because some people are allowed to own pet when they're psychos...
Load More Replies...Bless her little sheep's ear. She's been saved now so a happy ending thank heavens.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought it looked like a little sheep
Load More Replies...I adopted a puppy mill rescue too. She is the sweetest little thing on earth. It breaks my heart every time I think of these poor animals being abused at the puppy mill. Pull mills should be banned!!!
It has brought me to tears to think of what this sweet and totally innocent little girl has been put through. I am not going to describe what I think should happen to these people.. suffice to say it would be more than just a fine and imprisonment. Nothing can bring back the years that this little doggy has spent locked away but I an so glad she now has the freedom, protection and love that she deserves..
it is called money that is all the more they bred the more money they get people sont realise what or where there new babies come from, try and check the background if you can

Load More Replies...Weird comment here, but does anyone think this dog looks a bit like a lamb of is it just me? Ps happy that dog was rescued, but upset about puppy mills and the appalling conditions most of these poor dogs are kept in
This is the beautiful side of rescuing dogs. seeing them smile again and enjoying their new life. just awesome.
Anyone who runs a puppy mill should spend a year locked in a cage in the very same conditions they keep the dogs in. We could televise it. It would make for great viewing.
Damnit...keep hearing that Sarah McLachlan song in my head now. To those that abuse, I hope you're hearing Liam Neeson in yours!!
I too, have a puppy that was a victim of a private puppy mill. She along with dozens of other yorkie's were rescued here in Texas about 18 months ago. She is 9 years old now. I have had her for a year now but she was breed for 8 of those 9 years. Like your baby she never knew what it was to have a loving touch to her sweet soft tummy, or a tender kiss to her tiny head. Grass was a scary, new experience along with the bright sun. Oh but getting the old clumpy hair removed and a nice warm bath felt so good. Even a visit to the vet who was tender and spoke tenderly to her made her feel safe. It's been over a year since her nightmare ended and her new life has begun. She loves her older doggie brother and two cat siblings. She still doesn't know how to play with toys but in the last week I have watched her run in the backyard. Yes, we still have a ways to go but for now my little Sophie is home and she is loved. Sophie is finally happy and safe! God bless you for princess new life!
This is why Aliens won't speak to us! Lovely story, just too bad it actually needed to happend.
I can’t decide which I dislike more, people who abuse or neglect animals, or animal rights wackos.
I lost my 16 year old mini poodle 1 year ago this past May 1st. It is still hurting. He was my best friend and I got him a year after my husband died. I loved that do with all my heart and still miss him. <3
Brenda what a sweet and wonderful soul you are. There will absolutely be a special place in heaven for you and of course, B.B. Thank you so much for taking in this wonderful creature who only wanted to please and do good. I hope her "owners" are found (after a long time) in a cage with no light, no comfort only knowing those with no mercy. They absolutely deserve the worst treatment for the rest of their lives.
You need to give them a little space at a time. It's so overwhelming they can be traumatized forever
This is one of the saddest stories I've seen on Bored Panda. That poor precious puppy is so sad and precious.
These breeders should have to apply for an application (for a hefty fee), register with state/federal applicable agencies, pay a yearly super-hefty license renewal fee and be subject to random inspections to ensure the health and welfare of the animals. This would cut back on a lot of these unscrupulous "breeders" and perhaps force them to stop living as parasites and get a real job. Have you ever met any of these "breeders?" Too spooky for words,.
God bless you for your kindness! There should be strictly enforced FEDERAL laws that breeders have to file an application for "breeding" license, pay a registration fee and pay a yearly HEFTY licensing renewal fee, be subject to regular inspections and whatever else it takes to run an ethical "business." This would help to get rid of a lot of the walking sewage who are too lazy and too stupid to get a real job and are basically human parasites. I would cross the street to avoid breathing the same air as these lazy a**holes!
So happy this little one was saved-but sickened to think there are so many more like her. Dogs are so forgiving, when they have had awful lives they are still willing to try and trust people.
I would like to think there's a special place in Hell for these sub-humans posing as "people". But if I had my way, they wouldn't have to wait for transportation - I would happily dispatch them to an abandoned basement and let them rot.
This story made me cry. How can anyone do this to a fellow living creature? Put the puppy mill people into a small cage and leave them there for five years. Shove their food into the cage and ignore them. That is fitting punishment for these evil reptiles.
Nothing about the perpetrators. Is/was there any punishment or ban on keeping animals!
If I become president in 20 years, I'll do that. Let us leave them in cages, shove little bits of food at them, and ignore them.
Load More Replies...This woman deserves a medal !!! Poor bb !!! All that trauma she must have gone through must have been horrible. And not to mention the isolation she was in !!! I'm so glad she is saved !!!
What a lucky little girl. She looks like a Llama. People can be such pricks.
We do the same thing to billions of cows, chickens and pigs every day. But noone cares about that and as soon as a vegan brings it up they are angry and militant... Doublestandarts
That is so wrong the way the puppy mills treat their dogs. We should build a cage for the owners of them and make them live in it for 30 days as punishment for their actions while waiting to go to court for sentencing and no they won't get any time reduced for it.
I'm a law abiding citizen, I've never been arrested, questioned by anyone with authority, never even had a police caution. But seeing things like this gets me so mad that I consider donning an orange jumpsuit for justice to these poor defenseless babies. How anyone can abuse, neglect or inflict any kind of suffering upon another living creature just blows my mind. The trouble that this poor little lady could experience through over breeding is heart breaking. And all because someone wants to make money out of her. She should be loved, hugged and showered with happiness, not locked in a cage shelling out puppies... it's sickening!
This is why people should adopt!!! Both my dog and two cats were from the humane society, and I couldn't love them more. Poor B.B...
You saved this poor pooch Bless u She at last has peace and a good life X
I can't understand how someone can make something like that and hurt animals. That's sad.
we are supposed to make judgements based on fact. there are puppy mills, they are horrifying for the animals. always adopt pets. the dog looks like a lamb in some of the photos. so cute.
I swear, if I ever see someone mistreating an animal, I'm just gonna run up to them, sucker punch them in the face and take the animal and run before calling the police about animal abuse.
Even something like this u can't be happy. I hope you die a slow torturous death filled with crawling through broken glass and raser wire and bring dumped in a pool of rotten lemon juice and malt vinager and dried off by a flamethrower.
